One Small Sacrifice finds Sheryn Sterling, NYPD detective, keeping an eye out on Alex Trayor. This is because her friend Cori fell to her death under strange circumstances and she feels Trayor is responsible.

I found the story interesting and easy to follow. Would be interested in seeing more from this author.

An interesting read, a bit of a struggle to get through but overall ok - I appreciate the opportunity to review it!

Edge of your seat from the first chapter. This book kept me reading far into the night when I should have been sleeping. I recommend to anyone who likes good character development and fast paced plot line.

I read book #2 in this series first and I loved it so much that the author gifted me a copy of this one to read!

This one did not disappoint either. I loved getting to know the detectives more, and see their partnership begin to form (they are newly partnered up in this book). Sheryn was more skeptical and less friendly in this book, as this one was all about her obsession with putting away Alex Traynor, who she believed had murdered a woman but could never prove. I liked her more in book two, but you can definitely see a change in her throughout this book.

The mystery aspect kept me guessing all the way to the end, and I loved the shocking twist (which I was unable to guess, by the way). Even thought Alex Traynor was supposed to be the bad guy, I found myself rooting for him the whole time.

I am really happy with this series so far and can’t wait for book 3! I cannot recommend this series enough.

I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author, publisher and Netgalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Ms. Davidson has written what should be considered a masterpiece. This book grabs you on the first page and keeps you in suspense until the end. A satisfying mystery not easily solved by the reader.

5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended.

Thank you so much to the author for a copy of One Small Sacrifice along with her latest, Don't Look Down! I flew through One Small Sacrifice, reading it in one sitting on my way home from vacation. I honestly could not put it down and so appreciate the lead characters Sterling and Mendoza. Cannot wait for more of them in future books! Along with the amazing characters, the plot is fast-paced and full of twists I did not see coming - I was guessing about the end until the final pages. Highly recommend picking up this series!

I really enjoyed this book! It was fast paced and a page turner! I wasn't sure who did it until the end. I'm looking forward to the next one!

Last year, Alex was the prime suspect in the death of a friend of his who fell off the roof of his building. When his fiancé is reported missing, the same cop who had been in charge of that investigation is sure that he’s responsible for her disappearance.

In starting with Alex’ PTSD, it makes him the sympathetic character from the start and makes Detective Sterling the single-minded bulldog cop out to get a good guy. Considering it seems she should be the protagonist here, it felt like an odd choice at first.

Thankfully, Sterling’s stubborn belief doesn’t last too long as more evidence comes up that throws her assumptions into question. A character who’s willing to admit when they’re wrong will always have respect from me. I also really enjoyed the small glimpses we got to see of Sterling’s husband and family and hope they get another cameo in the next book as well.

Best part is, I thought I had it all figured out, but I was wrong. Nothing better than being surprised by an ending and still finding it believable.

A rainy weekend and this book is exactly what the doctor ordered! This book is suspenseful, surprising characters, and super twisty! This was a fantastic read! I loved everything about this book - the way the author has written it, the setting, and that ending though.
Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

There was so much going for this book. It had so much backstory that I was sure I was reading a book in the series instead of the first. Alex was a famous photographer with PTSD from so many war zones. His fiancé is a surgeon who goes missing. The detective who believes Alex got away with murder a year before is sure Alex has struck again. It's quickly apparent that he did not. The story seems like it should be so exciting but I found myself forcing my way through it. I just couldn't make my self pick it up and when I did I had to reread pages that just weren't holding my attention. It would pull me back in and then sputter out again.

Good plot and the story was delivered well, the characters were likeable, and I did enjoy reading this book. I feel like it was just a little bland in some places, but the story was good enough to keep me going.

Alex is a war photographer suffering from PTSD and a major drug problem. A friend he only hung around with while doing heroin falls off a roof and he’s accused of her murder. A year later he’s accused of his fiancés disappearance after mysterious notes and odd evidence.
Sheryn is the cop who investigated Alex’s friend’s death and is all for taking Alex down until her theories are botched and she realizes she’s rooting for the wrong side.
This story comes from 4 different people’s point of views. Alex and his fiancé. Sheryn the police officer and Bobby the supervisor of Alex’s apartment building.
Aside from the police investigation this book is filled with twists, secrets and you learn a lot about the sacrifices you’d make for the person you love the most.
You’ll find yourself LOST in this book because there’s topics bundled together that you wouldn’t expect and i LOVED every second of it!
I recommend to EVERYONE. finally a 5 star book!!!!!!

I really enjoyed this thriller from Hilary Davidson. It kept me guessing right up until the end. It was well written and carefully thought out. Each character is expertly dealt with and none are insignificant. The mystery as well as each character's involvement was well fleshed out throughout. There were many different avenues leading to the outcome of this mystery and I was kept guessing until the end, eager to read more, to learn the outcome. Traynor is a photojournalist suffering with PDST. Sheryn Sterling has a grudge against him. She believes he is responsible for the death of a young woman who fell from the roof of his building. His current girlfriend goes missing and Sterling is convinced Traynor is responsible. We are left immediately to wonder if the story will be a predictable one or if Davidson will keep us on our toes. I give this book 4 starts. It was very good indeed.

One Small Sacrifice, by Hilary Davidson, offers an intimate look at PTSD and how it affects a person. War photographer Alex Traynor is haunted by things he's seen and experienced, and Davidson uses her insights and skill as a writer to take you right inside his reality. You feel as though you're about to jump through your skin yourself when a car backfires or a slamming door reminds him of the sounds from the war zones he may have physically left, but can't quite exorcise from his mind.

When his fiance goes missing, he becomes the prime suspect. The thing is, he was the prime suspect in the death of a young woman--a friend of his--who plummeted from the roof of his building a year earlier. Detective Sheryn Sterling is determined to get Alex this time for the crime she is convinced he committed.

There are other questions that need to be answered, however. The father of the woman who died at Alex's building has been convinced of Alex's guilt and is dead set on getting revenge.

Turns out that Alex's long-time friend may have some unsavory motives as well, and as Alex tries to stay in control while being pursued as the prime suspect it seems like he's the only one really concerned about finding the truth and saving his fiance.

There's a lot to like in this story; the exploration of PTSD is exceptional and I found Alex to be understandable and sympathetic. This is, perhaps in part, the reason why I found the character of Sheryn Sterling frustrating.

Initially, I really liked Sheryn. I had a good impression of her family and life ... right until she got a new case involving Alex Traynor. Sheryn had been irresponsible enough in the past to convince the father of the woman who'd died a year before that Alex was responsible, and she has blinders on from the first time she hears Alex's name. She is convinced of his guilt, and at this point became, for me, both a common trope and a source of discomfort. As a POC in the story, I felt uncomfortable with the fact that Sheryn so quickly became unlikable and irrational. And she's largely unchecked at work. Perhaps that was exacerbated by her former partner recently retiring and working with a new partner who doesn't know her and is new to the NYPD as well.

I felt uncomfortable enough to have a conversation with POC I know; I was encouraged to abandon the manuscript. Ultimately, I didn't, because I was interested in Alex's character and the central mystery enough to want to see it through and get resolution.

Without giving spoilers, I will say that I was glad I stuck with the book. It doesn't completely mitigate my misgivings about this particular character. I had the impression of someone who was far more level headed than Sheryn was for much of the book, and as the primary POC in the story it didn't sit well with me. I think we're in an era now where we have to carefully consider the portrayal of race. It might have been more palatable if Sheryn had been trying harder to fight her own prejudices and preconceived ideas. The simple reality is, part of the reason she was so convinced of his guilt (his past and something that happened in a war zone) was so explainable that I'd like to think that a good cop interested in the truth would have realized that at the time, and actually pursued the truth, instead of pursuing the information that they could push into the mold of their theory so that they could charge someone they liked for a crime. That's my opinion; your mileage may vary. Sheryn did grow over the course of the book.

Thoroughly enjoyed this read. The main character is endearing but also you become a bit of a skeptic about him and his actions, past and present. He keeps reminding you he was responsible for someone else’s death. The plot twists a few times and you co tongue to shift your gaze as to who the real sinister one might be. Ultimately, you do find out what the sacrifice is, or, is it who?

Solid if somewhat unremarkable thriller. It kept me guessing without being particularly engaged in either the characters or the narrative.

Excellent psychological thriller! It moved at a fast pace with twists and turns throughout! Well-developed characters and plot. Highly recommend!

This introduction to the "Shadows of New York" series introduces the reader to Sheryn Sterling, an NYPD officer who always gets the perp. Still suspicious of a suspect who walked on a previous murder case, Sheryn is intrigued when the same guy's fiance disappears. Excited by the opportunity to finally nab the "one that got away," Sheryn investigates the missing person's case and opens an unexpected can of worms. What she thought was true comes into question, the more she digs. With unexpected twists and turns, the author keeps the reader guessing as to who is responsible for the kidnapping (if there was one) and who really is the guilty person in that previous case. It's a great book, and I look forward to the next one.
