It can be tricky to get kids to engage in a book about plants. Plants aren't generally big, dangerous, or otherwise physically exciting. That's where carnivorous plants come in. Start with Venus Fly Traps and Pitcher Plants and move into the more obscure plants, the ones that use lures bad smells and toxins. And once you engage them with unusual plants, you've opened them to the idea of plants as interesting organisms.

“When Plants Attack” by Rebecca E. Hirsh is a great nonfiction read full of cool and interesting facts about a few different plants including Venus Flytraps and vampire vines. I read this with my 7 year old daughter and we both loved it. The book introduces a range of different plants with beautiful photographs and random facts about each plant. Each chapter covers a single plant, discussing its unique characteristics and the research involved in studying the plant. Every chapter also featured a nice vignette which made the information much easier for my daughter to understand and remember. I would recommend this to elementary students interested in science and plants in particular.
