The best book on the subject: to the point, comprehensive yet precise, with not a 'food fad / miracle drug or drink' in sight. In easy-to-understand English, this reference book lays out the gut, body's system of digestion and excretion, what the body needs, what irritates / inflames the gut, symptoms of diseases / sickness / issues and related blood tests, what can cure it (all the food items, vitamins, habits that you need to adapt to get rid of inflammation). Very good book. Thanks.

Note to publisher: that's a really bad cover.

This is a very informative book about a variety of digestive disorders. The author also discusses what we can all do in order to keep our guts healthy, going into detail about food and our eating habits as well as supplements and lifestyles. The author covers digestive diseases, causes and effects .. This information was not only educational it is critical for patients who need to learn the scope of their digestive diseases and understand how to better heal themselves through proper eating and good health practices.

I used this book to study for a test (I'm a Med student) and i loved it. it was very easy to reed, nice and simple.
If you are looking for a book that helps you understand what's going on on your body or like me, you have to study for an exam, this is your book.

As a life long colitis patient I was very interested to receive this book for ARC to read for review. Thank you to the publisher and author for the ARC. My opinion is my own.
I found this extremely informative and useful for my own education in digestive disorders. I appreciated that the author included extensive critical information on how to keep our guts healthy . As someone who has lost an entire family to digestive cancers this was so important for me to utilize my own health routine.

The author covers digestive diseases, causes and effects .. This information was not only educational it is critical for patients who need to learn the scope of their digestive diseases and understand how to better heal themselves through proper eating and good health practices. This part of the book is so informative that I found myself re reading it and bookmarking several pages. The food issues are exemplary .

If you are interested in better digestive health and or concerned about your own digestive disease you must read this book. If you want to have better stomach health then read this book as part of your self help health routine. I guarantee you will put the author's suggestions to good use in your own life. I highly recommend this book.

The power and beauty of this book is that it is concise, to the point and full to the brim of very useful information. It contains no fluff or waffle.

Strictly as a lay-person, I've been aware of the developing science surrounding gut disorders, inflammation and functional medicine for some time now, and this book still taught me things I didn't know.

The book not only describes how the gut works but makes a decent attempt at giving general advice to anyone looking to implement a regime to heal their gut, and their associated conditions. On the face of it, the case histories from the author's experience could be argued as just filling, but then reading the stories are likely to strike a chord with sufferers, and that's where the solutions implemented at the recommendation of the author might come into their own with suffering readers..

For me, it does run out of steam towards the end, by filling the latter pages with recipes. Whilst I didn't find any benefit from this - mainly due to previous knowledge - I do recognise that this may be useful for others new to the area, and it would be wrong to mark it down accordingly because of this.

In short then, a great book for someone looking for deeper insights into gut disorders and possible solutions.

As someone who struggles with digestive disorders, I was eager to read this title. Although the flow of the book felt a tad boring at times, there were some helpful pieces of information. For example, I found it interesting when Greber included lists of foods to stay away from if you're dealing with stomach issues. As informative as it was, I wouldn't necessarily feel safe following any of the recommendations without checking with my doctor first, as some of them can seem a little extreme or out of left field. I would have appreciated a bit more of a fun, professional tone so this would have felt a little less stodgy.

I was hesitant to read this. I know these types of books are full of half-pronounceable words and my time would be wasted. I was half right. The words were unpronounceable, but reading it was not a waste of time. Reading through the different sections led me to try a few different things. I am now doing three things differently with my diet. I suggest that if you are having digestive problems, by all means read this book. You will probably never recall all the medical names, but look for your symptoms and see what is suggested. You may be surprised as I was.

The book explains different types of digestive disorders and how they are caused. It discusses how many of the popular fixes offered by gastroenterologists make it worse. It then offers solutions to the problem instead of quick fixes. After a tour of the digestive system and case studies, it lays out self-help treatment plans.

I have IBS and GERD. Even after surgery on my esophagus, I continue to have issues. How I wish I would have read this book years ago. I learned so much about the lack of nutrients causing my problems. We are told to avoid sugar, flour, etc. but this book enlightens us not on the food choices but on the overall nutrients needed in our bodies to function. I found this statement to be quite profound: “Far too little emphasis in the medical profession is put on nutrition and diet. The body is not sick due to lack of drugs, but it can be sick due to lack of dozens of nutrients that the body requires in the daily diet. Digestive disorders are fully preventable.”

The author states “Your daily diet and lifestyle routine may cause... nutritional imbalances, but this may be of little significance and is usually a result of environmental factors stress levels and precise quality of diet. Health problems however can start to manifest themselves when chronic nutrient deficiencies develop due to long-term poor dietary choices and imbalanced digestion with a lifestyle incompatible with good health.”

While some of the language may seem technical to a layperson, I recommend plugging through to obtain a vast array of information towards truly understanding our problems with digestion.

This is a very informative book about a variety of digestive disorders. The author also discusses what we can all do in order to keep our guts healthy, going into detail about food and our eating habits as well as supplements and lifestyles. In an age of fast food and highly processed foods I’m sure there is something of benefit in here for everybody.

There are a number of case studies dealing with specific digestive problems and showing how the author, in her clinical work, has managed to help the people involved to improve their digestive health. She shows how a disrupted digestive system can have much further reaching health consequences than just in our guts.

A good all round book on digestive disorders and digestive healing. The language used is not too technical or medical, but there is a lot to take in.

I was just diagnosed with gastroparesis and this book has helped me to understand the dynamics of what is going on in my “gut”. There is great advice and tips to follow. I hope I will now be able to manage my disease. Thanks to Matador and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

I found this a very informative read. They delved not only into IBS but also other disorders that can cause issues with the digestive system. It gave simple straight forward advice as well as explaining the reasons for these illnesses in a simple honest way.
