Ethan is aware of the Kindred- shapeshifters that corrupt others and take souls. As a cop, he sees the dark present in humans and the paranormal. Readers get the opportunity to see him grow in his personal and professional life. This book offers a new take on legends of shapeshifters and paranormal beings. The characters are interesting and multidimensional. There’s room for growth into other books with the many characters introduced.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free e-book to review.

I tried to enjoy this book, but couldn't quite get into it, I struggled to feel any empathy for the characters. I don't feel they were written very well, they felt a bit soulless and empty. I can forgive a lot of things like writing or plot if I love the characters, so I think that's where I couldn't connect with this book. The story and writing wasn't bad but I had no interest in the characters and so didn't care what happened to them at all. Sorry to say due to this it was not for me.

This book was a mixed bag for me. I love the authors' work and have her on my must read authors' list, however, this novel fell a bit flat to me. It took me until I was halfway through the book until I even felt I understood the characters or what was going on.

The author has created a complicated world on the Ark and with the Kindred that I found very confusing. However, this is the second book in the series and I did not read the first book in the series. I'm sure if I had read Animal Instincts, it would have made a bit more sense.

At it's heart, this is a romance between a detective and a Kindred, with far more complications than a normal relationship and plenty of guilt and angst to go around. On that part, it delivers.

This novel is a paranormal and quite a bit more fantasy than I was expecting. If you enjoy that blend of genres, you will want to read this book, however, I'd recommend starting with book one, Animal Instincts.
