Katie Woo loves her Aunt Patty and she and her friend JoJo spend a lot of time visiting her. When Aunt Patty asks her to be the flower girl at her wedding, Katie is thrilled! But then she starts thinking about all the things that could go wrong. She becomes very anxious and almost wants to back out. Jojo and some of Katie's other friends help her to get over her anxiety and participate in the wedding.

Flower Girl Katie is a cute, early reader novel that kids, especially girls, will love. Katie Woo is a great character for young children to relate to. Her anxiety about being a flower girl will hit home for many. Her friends were entertaining as well; and I enjoyed seeing all of the kids interact with one another while trying to help Katie. I liked that the children were from various backgrounds and ethnicities. The story was quick, with good description and language for early readers. I also enjoyed the illustrations in this book. They were cute, vibrant and well executed. I would recommend this book to families and schools, especially to deal with children who have anxiety issues. My grandson has anxiety problems and this book shows that it is normal and any child would be anxious in certain situations as well as giving some simple solutions to try. A special craft project, along with a glossary and reader response questions, round out this Katie Woo story. I didn't realize that this is a little series, but I will check out the others by Fran Manushkin. The publisher, Picture Window Books, generously provided me with a copy of this book up0n my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

Flower Girl Katie is a cute, charming novel that kids will love. Katie Woo is a great character for young children to relate to. Her anxiety about being a flower girl will hit home for many kids who are asked to be in a wedding. Her friends were entertaining as well; and I enjoyed seeing all of the kids interact with one another. The solution to Katie’s dilemma made me smile. My favorite part about this novel is that kids of many different backgrounds get to experience being together and working through their troubles together.

I like this book. Fran Manushkin’s writing is great for kids; her timing is quick and her descriptions are detailed and fun. I do wish there was more dialogue between the characters only because I like the plot so much. I know there is only so much you can do in a children’s book, but I think it is interesting to see more depth given the characters and their different backgrounds. Not only is the writing done well in this book, the illustrations are wonderful as well. Each drawing is very animated and colorful. I suggest this book to any child who is starting to learn how to read. This book teaches you that feeling anxious/nervous is normal, but it shouldn’t stop you from doing in life.

This is the latest book in the Katie Woo series. In this book, Katie’s aunt is getting married and she asks Katie to be the flower girl in her wedding. Katie discusses it with her friends, some who have been flower girls before, and Katie becomes nervous when she worries about all the things that can go wrong. Katie gets some help from her best friend JoJo and everything works out in the end. This was a good book, a bit brief and seemed to skip ahead, but that’s expected in a short early chapter book. There are three chapters, with illustrations and a manageable amount of text for early readers. I think this book and series, would do better with girls, but my son is 6 years old and he enjoyed it too. I would recommend this to beginning readers.
Special thanks to Netgalley for a complimentary copy in return for my honest opinion.

This is a chapter book for beginning readers. It tells the story of Katie who is asked to be a flower girl in her relative's wedding. Katie's friends offer her help and support as she gets ready...one even becomes a co-flower girl so that Katie won't be too nervous. This is a simple book that may be of interest to children who want to know more about weddings. The illustrations are engaging and multi-cultural and they add to the appeal of the story.

I have recommended the Katie Woo series and the series with Katie’s friend Pedro to students, teachers and parents who are searching for good beginning chapter books. This series does of wonderful job of using characters of diverse backgrounds and putting them into relatable, everyday situations. This is a series I have in many of my school libraries. This latest book is definitely a title I will placing on my book order list at the 11 school buildings I oversee.
This is my seven year old daughter Maria’s review. “I liked this book because it showed friends encouraging each other. This book gave you good ideas about what is like to be a flower girl.”

Is it scary to be in a wedding? Katie has never been in one, so asks her friends about it, and some give her bad advice, such as that she might make a mistake. Other friends tell her about the tradition of something old, something new, something borrowed something blue, and thinks that applies to to her.

The pictures are bright and colorful, and the story is a quick read, as an early chapter book. The solution to Katie’s anxiety is cute, and I like that other races are represented in the book, despite the story being about a traditional Western wedding.

Still, kids are still partiacipating in weddings, so this is a good introduction as to what to expect.
