Hide and Seek is the first book in the new Criminal Profiler series from popular romantic suspense author Mary Burton. This story features FBI agent Macy Crow, who was first introduced in the author’s last book, Cut and Run, where Macy was the victim of a serious hit and run accident she barely survived – but it’s not necessary to have read it in order to enjoy and understand this one.

When Hide and Seek opens, Macy has been working a desk job since being cleared to return to work some months after being discharged from hospital, and is keen to get back to work in the field. She’s applied to join the small but legendary team that tackles violent crime and is given a case file to review as part of her interview, that of a teenaged girl named Tobi Turner who went missing around fifteen years earlier. The previous week, the girl’s skeletal remains were found during a renovation project on an old barn in Deep Run in the Shenandoah Valley, and the local sheriff – a former FBI agent named Mike Nevada (with whom Macy had a brief fling before the accident) – requested the bureau’s assistance after DNA evidence suggested a link between Tobi’s death and the activities of an unknown serial rapist who’d been active around the same time.

The team leader isn’t offering any guarantees, but gives Macy an assignment – five days in Deep Run to find out everything she can about the case followed by a debrief in Quantico the following week – after which he’ll make a final decision about her application. It’s what Macy had hoped for – she’s good at her job and she’s ready to get back in the game; now she just needs to prove it.

Mike Nevada hadn’t intended to run for sheriff in his old home town, but after receiving an anonymous tip off about the fact that the incumbent had failed to submit a number of rape kits for testing, and a meeting with the man that left Nevada furious and frustrated, he’d immediately declared his intention to run for the post – and surprising even himself, had won. One of the first things he did after taking over as sheriff was to have those rape kits tested – and of the eight kits, three of them contain DNA that is a match to that found on the backpack belonging to Tobi Turner. But that DNA isn’t on file anywhere.

Once Macy arrives and starts her investigation, talking again to the families and friends of the missing girl and then widening her net to include the rapist’s surviving victims, she and Nevada start to unearth a web of connections stretching back years and into the heart of the local community. The earliest victims – one of whom was Nevada’s cousin – were raped but survived, although the extensive bruising to their necks showed an attempt at strangulation. But Tobi’s death was due to asphyxiation, indicating an escalation by the perpetrator. When a body is found dumped by the side of the road – raped, strangled, her hands bound with the red rope that has been found on or with other victims – it becomes clear that whoever is responsible never stopped committing these crimes, they just did them elsewhere – and now, with a new disappearance – a young woman who is similar in appearance to the rapist’s other victims – Macy and Nevada are racing against the clock to find her alive and catch a clever killer who has so far managed to keep himself completely off the radar.

Hide and Seek is a fast-paced mystery with a wonderfully twisty-turny plot that kept me guessing almost until the very end. There’s a fairly large secondary cast here, all of whom have important parts to play, and the two central characters are likeable and well-defined. This is more of a suspense novel with romantic elements, but the author creates a strong connection between Macy and Nevada, showing clearly that they like and respect each other and that the attraction that prompted their short-lived fling is still very much present. Macy is still struggling with pain in her damaged leg and not sleeping well; in addition she’s started to have strange dreams which have become more prevalent lately, but she pushes through it, unwilling to admit that perhaps she’s not taken enough time to properly heal, physically or mentally. Nevada offers quiet, unwavering support, even to the point that he doesn’t dismiss Macy’s concerns over the fact she’s started to dream that one of the victims is pleading for her help; I’m not sure if there author was trying to introduce some sort of paranormal twist here, but it was a bit awkward and didn’t really add anything to the story.

[I’ll issue a warning here and say that we get a number of scenes from the killer’s PoV which shed light on his twisted motivations, and put the reader in the room with him and his victims. The descriptions of his actions are not especially graphic, but may be difficult for some to read.]
I enjoyed the story although the suspense plot wraps up at something of a whirlwind pace, but there’s an HFN for Macy and Nevada, and I’m hoping that perhaps we’ll see them again in future novels in the series. If you’re a fan of this author, then Hide and Seek won’t disappoint, and if you’ve not read her before, this would be a good jumping in point.

Agent Macy Crow comes back after serious injuries sustained in a previous novel "Cut and Run" and is attempting to obtain an elite profiling position within the FBI. She is sent to investigate a homicide in a rural location with Sheriff Mike Nevada, who she has had a previous relationship with.

The story is fast paced and characters interesting. It is a suspenseful mystery with some hot romance in there. It has enough background to read as a stand alone, however I wouldn't miss Cut and Run, the first novel!

HIDE AND SEEK (Criminal Profiler #1) by Mary Burton is a romantic suspense with a stronger emphasis on the suspense/thriller plot line than the romance. The two main characters have been involved in the past, both professionally and romantically, which allows the author to amp up the suspense without the reader feeling cheated on the romance. This is a new series, but there is overlapping of characters from Ms. Burton’s previous books.

FBI Special Agent Macy Crow has an innate ability to connect seemingly unconnected pieces of a crime together to solve big cases. She is attempting to get on the FBI’s elite profiling team so she can get back out into the field. After being almost killed by a hit-and-run tied to her last case in Texas, she knows she is not yet one-hundred percent, but she is tired of sitting behind a desk.

Mike Nevada has returned home after resigning from the FBI. He was a profiler and had had enough of the death and depravity. He is elected sheriff after discovering multiple rape kits that the current sheriff purposely never had processed. When the bones and backpack of a fifteen-year-old missing person case of a high school girl are discovered, Mike requests Macy’s assistance on the case.

Macy and Nevada work together as seamlessly as before, but they are up against a killer who has evolved and honed his skills over many years. In 2004, he started with rapes and then worked his way up to kidnapping and murder. He is bold enough to have left his DNA at every scene and he is still free. He is watching as Macy starts to put the pieces together and he has decided she needs to be stopped - permanently.

I read this book in one sitting. The investigation was so intriguing and the killer so depraved that I just had to find out who the killer was. The climax had me on the edge of my seat. Macy and Nevada are a great couple who each understand what drives the other. Macy is extremely strong and resilient and yet vulnerable due to her physical changes since the accident. Nevada is strong, smart and the perfect man to support Macy. The sex scenes are not too explicit or long. All of the secondary characters are fully fleshed out and I will be looking forward to following them in future books, too.

I can highly recommend this book and I will be waiting anxiously for the next book in this series!

that she can overcome and conquer anything. Macy is definitely one tough cookie.

4.5 Stars

Macy is back at the Bureau on desk duty after a hit and run assault almost cost her life, but she’s got a chance at getting back in the field when the bones of a missing teenager, Tobi Turner, who disappeared fifteen years earlier are found and DNA connects the case to other unsolved assaults around the county. She’s pulled in to connect the dots while working with her former FBI colleague and lover, the newly elected sheriff, Mike Nevada.

There was never a dull moment, especially since the killer is on the hunt and targeting new victims as Mike and Macy race to unmask this villain. To find Tobi’s killer they must go back to the beginning, interviewing her friends and schoolmates who’ve since grown up. Macy uses her top-notch instincts along with the FBI’s cutting-edge technology to analyze the evidence, melding good old-fashioned detective work with modern crime fighting tools, and I enjoyed the process.

The romance between Macy and Mike wasn’t the focus for the most part, which made sense given the urgency of the case, but their chemistry was a constant nice buzz in the background. Macy’s a little unsure of Mike’s feelings since she’s still not at 100% physically since the hit and run, but Mike’s intent was always clear to me, and I knew it was just a matter of time before their feelings turned into more.

I could not put this one down! Hide and Seek was an addictive, fast-paced mystery with a nice bit of romance. Macy Crow was a secondary character in Cut and Run, where her attack occurs, but it’s not necessary to read it before diving into Hide and Seek. I enjoyed seeing Macy get back on her feet after the assault, never letting self-pity or doubt creep in and cripple her.

The main character in this book, Macy Crow, is a strong female who is determined to make sure she catches the criminals she is after. She was introduced in the standalone, cut and run, by Ms. Burton and now appears in this first book of the Criminal Profiler Series. The determination and fiery spirit of Macy brings this story alive along with the balance of romance written into the story to help Macy be able to keep her sanity from the twisted depraved people she is constantly chasing.

There is no doubt that Mary Burton knows how to build an eerie, scary, riveting murder mystery thriller that will give you the chills, that will scare you to check your locks and windows, and under your bed, because that boogieman does not only belong to the childhood nightmares anymore...
The constant twists, that each intensifies the investigation, caused me to be clued into the book. The case is grisly and the smalltown aspect where everyone knows everyone, the killer lurking right around the corner, just makes it even more frightening and intimidating.
Part of the story is told from the culprit's point of view part from the victims pov, and part from the investigators pov. Like I have said many times, that multiple points of views can make a mystery horrendously gruesome. And when the crimes are violence against women, including detailed rape scenes, that definitely can be too much for some readers, even if they are not normally triggered by that kind of scenes, cause there was a time in the story that I felt uncomfortable, to my bones.
The story has some physical attraction elements to represent romance, and for personally, it wasn't quite enough. The former lovers meet again in this investigation, and the attraction and lust are still there. Special Agent Macy Crow and sheriff Mike Nevada do care for each other, I would say Mike more so than Macy, and they act on their attraction towards each other, but two sex scenes does not a romance make... I wish this wouldn't be categorized as a romantic suspense but a thriller (with some romantic elements).
Their teamwork was flawless, they appreciate and respect each other as law enforcement agents, and they are comfortable with each other, in all the different kind of situations the investigation brings on them. I liked both of them, I admired them, they had guts, they were humble, honest, hardworking people, stubborn to get to the truth, putting the case as a number one priority in their lives.
All the local people that were introduced, as well as the team members that walked through the scenes of the story, were intriguing and interesting characters, well contributing to the tale and to the many turns in the pulsating plot.
A suspense-mystery that kept me on the edge, a horrid thriller of a serial rapist escalating into a killer is an arresting, engrossing start to the new series. Can't imagine the depths of fright this series will bring us. Is it weird to say - I can't wait to be scared to death again?!

Special Agent Macy Crow was first introduced in Mary Burton's Cut and Run where we also met her twin sister, Faith. Macy was injured during the investigation Faith was helping with, the investigation that actually led them to each other. Now, Macy is ready to get back out in the field and prove that she can still do her job and do it well. Which leads her Deep Run, Virginia, and to one-time lover Mike Nevada.

If you know me then you know I'm a huge fan of Mary Burton. With each book I only fall deeper and deeper into love with her books and storytelling. I'm never disappointed when I pick up one of her stories and this book was no different. She had me on the edge of my seat trying to piece together the puzzle she created. I love when I have to work for the answers and they aren't obvious right from the start. With Macy and Nevada's investigation I had so many theories on what happened or was going to happen and it had me captivated.

One of the amazing things about Ms. Burton's books is that she involves all the characters. It's not just the main ones that you fall in love with, it's all the secondary characters that also have so many secrets that come out and have you loving them as well. There's so much to discover from every character involved and I find it truly fascinating. Honestly, if you haven't read one of her books by now you are completely missing out and I definitely vote for you to start with this one.

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an fair and honest review.

Great, twisty plot and a hot, co-workers and lovers romance. It worked, but not without some minor problems. The backstories were muddled and not fully explained, or maybe I just lost interest. Lots of characters made it tough to keep track, or that could be that I was more interested in the softball games I was watching while reading, not sure. Anyway, this was a great Karen Rose wannabe and a solid read.

Special Agent Macy Crow is working her way back to full functionality and it is a tough road after she is nearly killed by a hit and run driver on a case that was more personal than professional. She is up for a place on an elite FBI team and ends up on the case with former lover, former FBI Special Agent Mike Nevada, who is now the Sherriff of Deep Run, VA.

Mike Nevada came home and discovered that the Sherriff was not acting in the best interests of the people he was supposed to protect, so he quit the FBI, ran for Sherriff and won. What he discovers is a body from 15 years ago and a cover up he couldn't ignore. Tobi's remains and the untested rape kits lead Nevada to request FBI assistance and he gets Macy. What they find is a monster who for 15 years has terrorized and murdered women.

A well paced, exiting read, Hide and Seek is the first book in Mary Burton’s Criminal Profiler series. A compelling story with intrigue and suspense this edge of your seat thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. I will definitely be recommending and looking to read more

This was classic Mary Burton with a twisted tale of pure evil. A rapist and murderer is loose and has escaped justice for years due to unprocessed evidence. Macy is barely back on the job at the FBI after a life threatening injury. She and the Sheriff, Nevada, had a fling prior to her accident. Their interest in each other hasn't waned, but the case is their focus. As the web of violence grows ever wider, Macy suspects more is connected than they realize. At the same time, Nevada wants to reconnect with her. I liked the two of them together. Macy was a very strong independent person, and Nevada accepts that by just working alongside her without trying to change her. In the end, it will take both of their instincts to catch a killer.

Net Galley provided an ARC.

Hide and Seek is another spine-chilling romantic thriller from Mary Burton. I received an invitation from the publisher, via Net-Galley, to read and review this book prior to publication, and could not wait to read it. My opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

This is a fast-paced novel with plenty of suspense and intrigue. It kept me enmeshed from the first page to the last. The writing is amazing, the plot is brilliant, the main characters are dynamic, and the villain is truly evil. While I suspected who the villain might be, it did not take away from the excitement at all.

I met Macy Crow in Cut and Run, and I hoped I would see more of her. I’m so pleased to have her story in Hide and Seek. She is intriguing with so many facets to her character. Her determination to solve the case is amazing. She’s like a dog with a bone who will not give it up! While her character is gritty, she has a vulnerable side as well. After recovering from her near-death experience, she wants to prove she still has it as a profiler for the FBI.

Mike Nevada’s character is her ex-lover and the sheriff of Deer Run. He’s connects the bones found recently, to several cold cases from 2004. Using DNA, he confirms his suspicions. He involves the FBI, and is glad when they send Macy, the woman he never should have let slip through his fingers. His feelings for Macy are strong from the beginning, and while they work to solve the case, he falls even harder for her.

As with most romantic Thrillers, the romance is not as strong as the suspense, but no less fulfilling. The attraction between Mike and Macy is blistering. I enjoyed that aspect of the story a great deal and wanted them to find their happy ending.

If you are looking for a novel that’s hard to put down with plenty of suspense and a “who done it” mystery to solve, then you will enjoy Hide and Seek. I certainly look forward to reading other releases by this amazing author in the future. She’s fast becoming one of my favorite Romantic Thriller authors. Happy reading!

Hide and Seek was another phenomenal romantic suspense from author Mary Burton and a fantastic start to a new series.

FBI Special Agent Macy Crow is not a woman who gives up easily. Still in recovery after a hit and run almost killed her, Macy is eager to get back into the field. Her first assignment is the case of Tobi Turner, a high school girl whose bones were recently found after fifteen years. Working with Macy is local sheriff Mike Nevada, a former agent and someone Macy has a personal connection with. As Macy and Mike work Tobi’s case, the pair uncover several other cases from the time Tobi went missing that now appear to be connected. And after another woman goes missing, Macy and Mike are in a race to find the killer before it’s too late.

Macy is the sister of Faith McIntyre, the main character in the author’s recent book Cut and Run. It was during the events of Cut and Run that Macy was involved in the hit and run that almost killed her that she’s still suffering the effects from in this book. Macy despises the limitations she now has due to her injury and as a result she pushes herself harder than she should so soon after being hurt. I understood Macy’s frustrations as she was a woman used to doing and doesn’t like being sidelined.

Macy worked with Mike in the past and the two had a no strings relationship at one point. When the pair meet again, it’s clear there’s still something between them and I enjoyed watching them dance around their obvious attraction. The pair work well together and they understand each other both professionally and personally. When their relationship does progress, I enjoyed the direction things went and felt it fit their relationship perfectly. Plus the sex scenes between the duo are fantastically done with the perfect amount of steaminess.

The investigation in this book was incredibly interesting and I was curious who would end up being the killer. The killer in this book is extremely depraved, having moved from stalking to rape to murder. The more Macy and Mike looked into Tobi’s death and the string of rapes, the more the pair uncovered. At times it felt like they were finding one thing after another which did lead to the book being quite fast paced. I liked that there weren’t any dull moments and felt the author did a great job keeping you hooked. The ending of the book was very well done in my opinion and I thought the final showdown with the killer in particular was fantastic.

Overall I really enjoyed Hide and Seek and I really liked the connection to her previous book Cut and Run. I definitely recommend these books if you prefer your romantic suspense to focus more on the suspense aspects.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Hide and Seek by Mary Burton that I read and reviewed.
This was the first book in Burton’s new Criminal Profile series and looked at a cold case and had a FBI agent join with local law enforcement to solve the case in this book.
I enjoyed this book. Macy and Nevada had a past connection so they worked well together and they fit well together as characters. There was also a large pool of suspects so that kept the reader guessing about who the person was behind the crimes.
However, I was a bit confused with some things in the book that I don’t want to go into for spoiler reasons but I wish the ability would have been explained. I was very disappointed that was not really addressed.
Overall, this book was good, not my favorite Burton work but I will continue with the series and see where it goes.
This book gets four out of five stars.

Agent Macy Crow is on her next case. Still not fully recovered from her near fatal accident, trying to find her Father's killer.. She instead found answers about her birth mother and a twin sister. This time her case takes her on the hunt for the murderer of several young women.

When she is sent to work with an old flame, it seems that not everything is kosher in the little town and not everyone is nice. Smiles and money and a one time glory past hides a rapist and murderer. Will Macy and the Sheriff catch him in time before he takes one of their own?

This is the second book i have read by this author and i am loving her style of writing. Fresh, flowing and enjoyable. I look forward to more stories involving this particular detective.

4 Risking It All Stars
* * * * Spoiler Free
It was shocking to me to realize, this was my first Mary Burton read...As someone who had a history of mysteries and thrillers before my 0bsession with romance, I was stunned by this absence. Well, I can testify it will not be my last as Ms. Burton has a huge catalog and I will be diving in.

Special Agent Macy Crow knows challenges... it seems that is all she has ever dealt with. You could say surviving a life threating hit and run could be the ultimate challenge for Macy. Instead of succumbing to the overwhelming necessary recovery, she used her desire to be part of the FBI’s elite profiling team to pull her through the tough times. Macy stayed focused and came back to work.

When there is an opportunity to show she is serious about that coveted position on the profiling team, Macy convinces the powers that be to give her a chance on a cold case that popped up. Macy is off to look into the discovery of 15-year-old bones of a young high school girl.

What adds to this exercise for Macy is the man she has to work with. Mike Nevada was just like Macy, a Special Agent, and now is the town's sheriff. He also happened to be a onetime lover of hers so there is a respect and past relationship which binds.

These two work this case and uncover more than expected... it looks like this one girl was not the only one touched by this monster. As they both uncover the past, the perpetrator rises again and locks onto Macy as his next target.

This read like a runaway train and I held on to the end. Although the characters had been introduced in Cut and Run, I had no difficulty in jumping into this new series.

SA Macy Crow thinks she's working a cold case with Sheriff Mike Nevada- after all, the bones are those of a girl who disappeared 15 years ago. Unfortunately, however, the discovery of Tobi's remains also digs up an old villain, who becomes active once again. This one has all the elements- a serial criminal, a threat to a heroine, a little romantic tension. No spoilers, though! Thanks to net galley for the ARC. A good quick read for fans of the genre. I did not read the first book with Macy as a character but that wasn't an issue and now I'm curious where she'll turn up next.

Agent Macy Crow has a lot to prove after an attempt was made on her life and she spent months in recovery. She is sent to a small southern town to investigate the murder of a local woman that went missing several years ago. When it is discovered that her DNA is linked to several old rape cases, Agent Crow must track down the rapist and murderer while battling the demons from her own past. When she arrives in town she finds the new sheriff is an old coleague and love interest, Mike Nevada, who she hasn't seen since before her attack.

I enjoy the author's mix of mystery and romance and always find her books to be enjoyable and entertaining. I really feel like this author is under appreciated and should get some more exposure because I think many would enjoy her books. The only thing that bugged me about this book is that I felt like the backstory could have been another book in itself. I had to check and make sure I didn't miss a previous book in the series. By the end of the book, enough of the back story was revealed to create a big picture and I found that it came together nicely. Overall, I recommend the book, especially for those who like both mystery/thrillers and romance novels.

You can pick up a copy of Hide and Seek by Mary Burton on April 23, 2019. This is the first book in a series so watch for additional books in the Criminal Profiler series.
