Despite the interesting premise, I wasn't expecting much from this. Early on, I already know what's happening and as the story goes, things get more predictable. But that didn't put me off because surprisingly, it is pretty engaging. Both the past and the present are intriguing and I find myself engrossed with the stories. It is an emotional read but satisfying as well.

This book had me hooked from the start. Three generations of the same family all have a secret. It all started with Betty whispering to her granddaughter look after my babies was this just a confused dying old lady or was there something to her ramblings . Many twists and turns and it really is a book that touches you . But won’t say too much as you’ve got to read this fantastic, heartwarming & emotional book.

This book has so many secrets in it that you dont know whats going to come out first! It starts with Nicola being asked to look after the babies in the garden by her grandmother as she passes away. This starts Nicola down a road of discovery full o family secrets that people have tried to keep buried for years. This has some incredibly emotional scenes in it and the topic of sexual abuse is present throughout.
I feel the author dealt with the sexual abuse topic well and highlighted the need people felt to keep it quiet and feel like it was all their fault.

I stumbled upon this book on Netgalley and it immediately piqued my interest. After reading other readers' reviews I was convinced that this would be a brilliant thriller and was excited to start reading it. However, I originally could not connect with any of the characters and was not immediately drawn to the plot either. The pace was slow at first and the interlocking past and present story lines did not seem related. It was Betty's last words "There are babies at the bottom of the garden" that really motivated me to keep reading.

At around the halfway point into the book the plot started to thicken and new characters were introduced and I found that I suddenly couldn't stop reading. It is also around this point where we start to understand how the letters and present day story line are linked and the appalling secrets are discovered. The author handles the rainbow of emotions extremely well and provides an excellent insight into each character's feelings. However, I think that the challenge of addressing these issues over several generations was too demanding even though the impact was much bigger.

Overall, this poignant story was well developed despite the lagging first few chapters. I would recommend it to anyone interested in reading a family drama as I don't agree that this book should be filed under the Thriller category.

The Last Thing She Told Me is out to buy tomorrow!

Loved this story. Two storylines going on. Present day and 1944. This comes into play throughout the book. Only as the story goes on do things become clear. Author makes you think 1944 are one and the same but it isn't. Well written, continued interest in the plot. Someone isn't who he says he is. Bad things are corrected finally.

Moments before she dies, Nicola's grandmother whispers to her a long kept secret. Nicola's mother claims she was talking nonsense. But which one is telling the truth?

When Nicola learns from her grandmother Betty that there might be babies buriedatbthe bottom of the garden, she confronts her mother about it. Her mother tells her it's just the ramblings of a dying woman. But then, Nicola's youngest daughter Maisie, finds a small bone near the fairy ornaments at the bottom of the garden. This opens up a can of worms as Nicola foes against her mother's wishes and get the police involved.

What a tangled weave this story becomes as more people are dragged into the storyline. There is a lot more to be revealed before we get thothe conclusion. Three generations of women whose lives have all been effected by lies, guilt and secrets. In between the chapters there are love letters from William that had been sent to Betty. Although Nicola wanted to honor her grandmothers wishes, she found although it was hard, she had to do what she thought was the right thing. This is the first book that I have read by the author but it won't be my last. It caught my attention from the beginning.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Quercus Books and the author Linda Green for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book broke my heart. I was totally caught up in the story from the start. I laughed and cried my way through. I liked the characters and the way the story is told. It is a heartbreaking story about loss and love and the horrendous crimes people commit. This story will stay with me for a while.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

The Last Thing She Told Me is an upsetting read at times and does cover some sensitive material but I feel this is done well without going too deep into it.
Nicole cares for her grandmother, going every day to see her as her own mother won’t go for reasons we find out about later in the book. Nicole’s grandmother dies and her last words were “look after my babies at the bottom of the garden”. As there are two fairy statues at the end of the garden, Nicole thinks nothing more of it until her youngest daughter finds a tiny bone there after playing near the statues. This creates a rollercoaster of a ride for Nicole and her family as the police are notified and their life is tipped upside down.
This is a relationship book of the bond between mother and daughter and grandmother and secrets that were buried in the last don’t always stay that way.
I enjoyed this although there were a few characters I didn’t like but this did not detract from my enjoyment of this different genre book to what I usually read.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Quercus Books for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

Before dying, Nicola's grandma tells her something cryptic and that is what the whole story revolves around. It unravels secrets from the past causing heartbreak and pain.

I have to admit that I had trouble getting into this book. It took me time as my interest really wavered; maybe because I found Nicola's daughters irritating and too much time was spent on them but then I made myself read it and i'm glad that I did. The first quarter of this book honestly sparked no interest. It only became a page turner half way through - that's when there was a twist; the kind of twist where you have to turn back a few pages to look at what you've read from a different perspective.

Took me a while to get into this book, was quite slow to start with and many of the characters weren’t likeable. At the halfway mark the story got going a bit more but it was quite hard to follow and I feel like there were a bit too many storylines to really grasp properly. However it was a good book and the ending made up for it.

This is the first book that I have read by this author and it certainly won’t be the last. I had intended to read this book over a few days but ended up completing it in a day. A very moving story about family secrets and the way the shockwaves can reverberate through the generations. Highly emotionally charged with some very unexpected twists in the tale, some of which brought me to tears. Highly recommended.

Wow! This is one heck of a well crafted mystery!
Fast paced with indepth characters and spooky surroundings, it ticked all my boxes.

Grandma's last words "look after my babies" turn Nicola's world upside down before she has a chance to interfere.
What used to be the garden playground with adorable fairy statues, turns out to be the keeper of a decades old secret. Tiny bones are found and nobody's talking. What happened all those years ago?
While the police are investigating, we accompany Nicola and her wonderful daughters in their daily routines. Eight year old Masie's zest for life and Ruby's teenage tantrums create a good balance in these messed up circumstances.

There are different voices and their stories in the background, and while it takes some getting used to not yet knowing who we're dealing with, the bigger picture does appear. With some good twists the book races to the grand finale and closes with a beautiful and respectful ending.
What an amazing story! Highly recommended.

My feelings are mixed on The Last Thing She Told Me, the storyline is fascinating but it's let down by the authors inability to move the plot along and overall poor writing. 3/5 since I liked the idea and the authors message at the end, if I was scoring on writing alone it would be 1/5.

#The Lasy Thinb She Told Me # Netgalley
Wow this is a really emotional and touching book, it was gripping and quite poignant. When told a secret like that on her grandmothers death. Bed, it must be one of the hardest things to have told, also one of the hardest to hear. Although at first it wasn’t taken seriously. Sorry I can’t and don’t put spoilers in any book. However I would definitely recommend this book, be prepared to be emotionally touched by this novel. I couldn’t help but get really absorbed in the story, it was also if I was living the journey. A most definitely, must read.

4.5 Stars rounded up.
This was heart-wrenchingly sad in parts. I tried so much not to cry but, by the end, it took me over and I sobbed my heart out.
Nicole's grandmother Betty is fading fast but, before she dies, she tells Nicole that she is leaving her her house so she can then pass it on to her own daughter Ruby. She also tells her to look after the babies at the bottom of the garden. After her death, Nicole asks her mother what she could mean and she insists that she was probably talking nonsense, probably just talking about the fairy statues that stand there. But, after the funeral, Nicole's children are playing in the garden and find a bone. Suspecting it to be human rather than animal, Nicole investigates further and discovers more bones. She then, against the wishes of her mother, decides to do the right thing and take this discovery to the Police. Things then start roller-coasting out of control as more bones are found and Nicole starts to wish that she had never opened that box as some shocking family secrets, hidden for years, start to come to light.
Once I started this book I had to know the end. Luckily I read it on a day when I had nothing planned cos I don't think I could stand the not-knowing. This meant that I really could feel for Nicole and what she was going through. I say Nicole, I also include her family in this; her mother who has some secrets of her own, and her husband and two children are all swept up in it all.
Along with the present day narrative, we also hear from two other sources. One consists of letters from William to Betty and the other details something nasty happening to another unnamed character. These three threads come together towards the end when the whole horrible truth of it all finally comes out.
My only qualm about the whole thing is the sheer fact that all this happened to three women in consecutive generations of the same family; especially with how it all wrapped up at the end. But I was willing to accept it all for the sake of what was a very powerful emotional read that kept me gripped throughout.
As with While My Eyes Were Closed, the only other book I have read by this author, this is very much a character driven book. The tension that builds up throughout that book also stems from the family interactions much the same as it does with this one.
It's hard to say that I really loved this book due to its subject matter - and it does contain some stuff that may affect people who have suffered similar in their own lives - but I did. I got very emotionally involved in the story and the characters and I felt the loss, hurt and confusion along with them. Like I already said, I sobbed at the end but that was more with relief than anything else. The anger and frustration were felt along the way for some of the things that happened in the past.
One of the things I especially loved about the book was the author's portrayal of Nicole's two children. I won't go into any detail here due to spoilers apart from to say that it all felt very real.
All in all, another great read and I'll definitely be looking out for more from this author. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

A good gripping book ! Some of the events were hard to read without shedding a tear. It’s upsetting to think that the issues within the book are still about today . Women shouldn’t be made to feel ashamed or hide what they have had no control over.
I would definitely recommend to others. Thankyou to Netgalley and Quercus books for allowing me to read a preview copy. I look forward to reading more by Linda Green

I almost think the book blurb for The last thing she told me by Linda Green does the book a slight disservice.

I felt like I didn’t get the book I was expecting to read and instead I got this emotionally heavy story that dealt with some very difficult themes of loss, abuse and death.

Maybe it was my own biased reading of the blurb the first time around, but I thought I was picking up more of a psychological domestic thriller type novel with a big twist ending and this is a sad, emotional roller-coaster of a book.

Although it was a tough read for me, the story, and the characters kept me reading to the very end and when the last page came I was sad to leave them behind.

It was a good book, it was just a very heavy read.

I came out of it feeling the need to go for a walk in the sunshine.

This is not my first Linda Green novel. She has become one of my go to authors for a good story, and I’ve read most of her recent books as well as catching up on her back catalogue. The very first book of hers I read years ago was The Mummyfesto and I completely recommend it, especially if you fancy a story about what would happen if a group of Mums decided to take a shot at running the country.

I purchased The last thing she told me by Linda Green initially, but I also received it for review in the run-up to the paperback release on March 7th 2019.
