An important analysis of identity, how we judge and see ourselves and others, what can destroy our identity, plunging us into shame. The book discusses how we go to great lengths to avoid shame, feelings of inadequacy, stigma and failure. A very insightful and thought-provoking read.

Read this book if you want to discover how to interact and manage your personal feelings while still staying true to who you are. Shame is a feeling that we all have but can be quite difficult to understand or comprehend and so I enjoy how this book puts it into perspective and gives a way to understand the complex emotion.

Thank you Watkins Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC.

I was excited to have the opportunity to read this book as there are many books on our emotions, especially, love, anger, fear, but not so many on the little spoken emotion shame. I was interested in how Mr Burgo explains shame and how shameful experiences impact our self esteem. I often though “of course” while reading with the passages making sense in their explanations.
Thank you for helping explain how shame impacts us and what we can do to limit its place in our psyche.

If you struggle with shame and blame this is for you. It’s refreshing to know your not alone and in the big world where talking outloud about your feelings and experiences can be hard. But a glass of wine and shame in your PJS makes life a little less scary!

This was a different book than I thought our would be. The research is excellent but I was hoping for more real life stories and insight from individuals.

I’ve always struggled with shame. I’ve read so many “self-help” books and have always been left feeling discouraged. This is an amazing, insightful book tackling the issue of shame. I’d recommend this book to anyone who feels like they’re struggling.
