Xuan Juliana Wang has written an excellent debut collection of short stories. I've heard this hyped in several places so I was worried that it would be doomed to disappoint me, but it thankfully did not. The stories are all brilliant and unique and I look forward to recommending this to other readers.

This book is absolutely phenomenal. The stories feel distinctly modern and while some are locked in reality, others are filled with magic. They’re haunting, relatable, and a joy to read.

Home Remedies is a beautifully written collection of short stories set in both China and the United States. I really enjoyed all of the stories, but my favorites included a story about a young woman becoming a fashion icon after taking a dead girl's clothes, one about a high diver secretly in love with his diving partner, and another in which a young man in New York picks up an actress at the airport as a favor only to have her usurp his life (or at least his living arrangements). Wang explores themes of family and belonging in absolutely lovely prose. Highly recommended.
