This is such a cute story. I love Princess Puffybottom! I know my elementary students will love this book since I have so many animal lovers, and I'm sure many of them will be able to relate to having an annoying sibling around! This book has really nice illustrations as well.

This is a cute story for both cat and dog lovers. Great illustrations. I think kids will love it.

How can you go wrong with a character named Princess Puffybottom? Great illustrations and story. However, being in a middle school, I would skip this title.

Princess Puffybottom is a spoiled cat whose owners pamper her and wait on her hand and foot. But then her owners bring home a...dog! Princess Puffybottom is irritated by everything Darryl does - and tries her hardest to get rid of him. Will she ever be able to find room for the new family member, even if they have completely different personalities?

This quickly became one of my favorite kids' books. I love the diversity, and these are some of the CUTEST illustrations EVER. The twist ending was great and a hilarious surprise to Princess Puffybottom, Darryl, and readers alike! I definitely need more of Princess Puffybottom and Darryl's adventures in the future!

NOTE: I received an ARC copy of this book on NetGalley. I received no incentive to read or review this book other than said copy of work. The review below contains my own thoughts and opinions. Special thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the free copy.

My daughter asked me to read this again and again. By the end of the week you will either love or hate it! It is our new bedtime favorite. So loved!

Super cute! I really enjoyed the story, and the humor. The illustrations were a bit of a throwback to more 1970s styles of illustration. I liked the story the illustrations told as well, and the diversity of characters that were shown. This is a cute book that kids and grownups both can enjoy.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Naturally when I saw a title character named Princess Puffybottom, I was intrigued. Those of us with magnificent natural floofs are worthy of attention.
It turns out the book is as charming a children’s story as I expected. It tells the story of a beautiful kitty who has her humans well trained until, one day, that they the unforgivable. They adopt a puppy named Darryl.

He is a pest in her carefully arranged world and no matter what she tries, she does not seem to be able to get rid of him. The failure of her efforts makes her sad but no one but Darryl even notices. It is at that moment that the two become friends- naturally with the kitty still in charge.

It is a delightful little story with sweet artwork that will enchant the young reader. Five purrs and two paws up.

I have only owned dogs, but my grandchildren have both a cat and a dog, as well as their father's name being Darryl, so needless to say, they loved this book. Princess Puffybottom lives with her "subjects" and life is good, that is until they bring home a puppy! Darryl the puppy, offends Princess Puffybottom's sensibilities. She finds him uncouth and disgusting. She wants him to be banished and tries all sorts of tricks but it doesn't work. Darryl is there for good. When she finally resigns herself to the fact that they are going to both live in the house, another family member appears.

There are several things I liked about this book. Princess Puffybottom's family was made up of two mothers. This was just the way it was, not fanfare, no explanations, just a family. I loved the adorable pets. They were cute, funny and it was obvious how much Darryl wanted to be accepted and make friends. The illustrations were wonderful, so adorable that even poop was cute, and my grandchildren pointed out the pile of poop with glee. I did not notice while reading that one of the mothers was pregnant, until the end when a new baby appears, and I looked back at the illustrations. My grandchildren laughed at the antics of Princess Puffybottom and Darryl. Everytime I said Darryl, my granddaughter would shout, that's not daddy! We had fun with this story and I definitely recommend it to families, schools and public libraries. The publisher, Tundra Books, generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

My Review: Having loved a black cat dearly for the past 15 years, I was instantly attracted to this cover. Munchkin is madly in love with our cat Valerie, so I thought it would be a fun book to share with him. This book was above and beyond anything I could have ever expected. This is kind of how my cat's life went, she was queen bee, ruled the house and had everything she could want, we brought home a big bouncy dog and she was not happy. It was so fun to read the progression in Princess Puffybottom's life and it was fun to revisit memories of our own household. I like how the message of change and new things can be good was subtle but clearly there. Also in the background we get to see a loving and stable relationship between two women, I love how it is there not hiding but also not being forced to the front. This is a very sweet story and it would be a perfect bedtime story for little ones. The soft illustration style and colors are soothing and the story is short enough to read to sleepy kids.

My Rating: I adored this story and while Munchkin didn't pick up on the subtler details he did latch on to the black cat being like our own and how the family has one cat and one dog. It was so cute and sweet that we can't help but give it a rating of Four Paws!

Princess Puffybottom's life has been turned upside after the arrival of Darryl. She is confident that it will only be a matter of time until he is banished from her perfect kingdom. But what if Darryl is here to stay?

Such a fun story about accepting new members into your household and how even when things seem bad, there is a silver lining to everything. Loved the illustrations and the cute twist at the end. Definitely one I will be recommending to young readers.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this one (cat books can be hit-or-miss for me), but this is actually a pretty funny book. Princess Puffybottom lives with her "subjects" (a lesbian couple, which was a pleasant surprise) and life is good... until the day they bring home a puppy named Darryl. Darryl offends Princess Puffybottom's sensibilities terribly; he's uncouth and disgusting (at least, in the cat's mind). Watching her try to get the puppy banished is pretty funny. She tries all sorts of tricks, but nothing works, and she eventually has to accept that the dog is there for good.

There's another story thread that's sort of running along in the background involving the women, and I didn't pick up on it right away. It's all spelled out by the end of the book, though, and it promises more aggravation for poor Princess Puffybottom. And she thought Darryl was bad!

The illustrations are really quite adorable. (Somehow, the illustrator even managed to make a pile of poop look cute!) And I appreciate the fact that the women are not only a same-sex couple, but also people of colour. It's not actually talked about in the text (it's just accepted as the way things are), but the lovely illustrations bring the characters to life. I kind of like how this was done, especially with the ending; but this makes viewing the pictures rather essential to grasping the plot.

Overall, I enjoyed this more than I thought I might. It's a good story about rivalry and jealousy, but also tolerance and acceptance.

Cat lovers are sure to be jazzed this spring as there is a wealth of great picture books releasing all featuring cats. Tundra Books is adding Princess Puffybottom...and Darryl by Susin Nielsen and Olivia Chin Mueller to their cat-alogue. The sweet story of a pampered cat whose life is unexpectedly turned around thanks to the arrival of Darryl, a new puppy. Princess Puffybottom tries her best to be rid of Darryl to no avail, until she realizes what a great friend he can be. He goes back to her mostly ideal life thinking her subjects won’t be bringing home any more surprises...little does she know.

It’s a cute little story, by an author known best for her incredible middle grade novels, about acceptance. The best part about this story is its subtlety. Susin Nielsen does not blatantly have her characters extoll a moral about accepting others and new things, it’s clever and quiet, wrapped up in a silly story about a regal cat.

Olivia Chin Mueller’s illustrations help add to the richness of the text and the subtlety of the story. Throughout her beautiful illustrations you can see the goings on of the family in the background of the story. A keen eye will notice Princess Puffybottom’s subjects are both female, lovingly taking care of their beloved pets. A keen eye will also notice the progression of the family from a one cat household, to a cat and dog household and finally to a household with not only two pets but a little baby. I absolutely love how Susin Nielsen and Olivia Chin Mueller added this beautiful element to the story. There are many books out their explaining families and how families are different but not many that just feature different families in the background of a story about something else entirely. Children are able to see these things in the text illustrations and know they are normal. They can see their families reflected in these everyday stories. We need more stories featuring diverse families, not as the focus of the story, but in the background, visible and clear.

The cat illustrated make a perfect Princess Puffybottom. Black, furry, entitled, ruler of the roost. Until puppy Darryl joins the mix. And Princess wants him gone. The funniest illustrations is Princess trying to hypnotize her subjects to put him out. A simple version, with sweet illustrations, that reminds me a bit of Garfield and Odie. But Princess is much nicer to Darryl than Garfield ever is to Odie.

Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this digital ARC.

If you know anything about me, you know that I love cats. Even if they are snobby, particular, and frustrating pets at times, they will always have my heart. This adorable story is about a pretentious cat rather annoyed at the new furry member of the family and her evil plans to send this new pet on his way. She's so wrapped up in her plan, she doesn't see something else happening in the background.

The illustrations are lovely and provide a great deal of inferential clues in the background with the words of the story simple, but funny and will certainly have kids laughing at Princess Puffybottom's antics. I would highly recommend for elementary students, in particular, K-2 classrooms.

Hilarious story about a very particular kitty who is entirely unimpressed by the new puppy. Just when she thinks nothing more will go wrong, her moms surprise her... Loved it!

Oh, how relatable this story is!
Princess Puffybottom rules the house, until Darryl arrives. She does everything she can to banish him, but nothing works - and then she realizes how great he is to have around.
A great tale with excellent illustrations, too!

Princess Puffybottom is exactly what she sounds like-- princess of the house. She's not thrilled when Darryl comes to live in her kingdom. He acts like an animal! When Princess Puffybottom is at her lowest, she finds that maybe Darryl isn't so bad... Adorable, sweet, silly, and of course, PUFFY! Any animal lover will adore this feisty feline and her new friend.

I have seen NO ONE mention that Princess Puffybottom has two mommies! Of course it's not a big deal (YES IT IS) or about that (which I guess I am making it now but I'm happy about it and want to express my gratitude) but children need more books that just show families being families.

This book wouldn't show up on my kindle correctly so I downloaded the app Netgalley recommends. That made the graphics visible but the words were so small I could barely read them even when I zoomed in. I still enjoyed the book. It was too short but the graphics are absolutely gorgeous.

I recommend Princess Puffybottom and Darryl to anyone who loves pets, loved the movie The Secret Life of Pets, the movie Bolt, the movie Homeward Bound, or are planning on additional family members joining the family whether they are fur babies or tiny humans. I can't wait to own this book in hardback. 💕💕💕

Final thoughts: PLEASE MAKE PRINCESS PUFFYBOTTOM... AND DARRYL INTO A FEATURE FILM

Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada and Tundra Books for allowing me to review this adorable book.

This is a delightful story that kids will love. Princess Puffybottom is a refined, elegant feline who has the humans in her home wrapped around her cute furry paws. She gets meals that are fit for royalty, servants that take care of her "delicate matters" ( her litterbox), and all the love and affection that she so rightly deserves. Hellooooo!!!! Then one day her purr-fect Princess world is turned upside down with the arrival of... Darryl, a dog of all things!

She finds him totally uncouth, disgusting and well.... an animal! He pees everywhere, licks up his own vomit, drinks from the toilet and has no eloquence in him at all. Yuk!

The arrogant Princess concocts schemes to get rid of him but to no avail. It seems that he is there to stay. The humans don't even seem to care about his mannerisms as they are focused on other things.

Princess Puffybottom concedes that Darryl does include her when he tips over the trash and they share the leftovers they find together and he does adore and worship her... that is truly obvious. Perhaps she needs to cut him some slack and at least try to co-exist with this adorable little guy. When she makes the decision to finally get over herself she finds that her world goes back to being purr-fect again. Well... for a little while it is. A wonderful, fun twist is added at the end of the story which just might turn Princess Puffybottom's world on its ear once again. Mmmmmm... wonder what that might be?

The illustrations are so expressive and full of life. I really love them. They make a perfect marriage to the text and add a lot of richness to the story. The storyline is full of humour and just plain fun. The unexpected ending will be a big hit I'm sure. Who doesn't love a clever twist that is guaranteed to make you smile? I highly recommend it.

Very cute illustrations on this book. The story isn't unique and is fairly simple but it has perfect illustrations to match the story and shows the personality of most cats (haughty and you can only pet when allowed) versus the more "dumb love" of a puppy. I wish there was a little more substance to make it more appealing to my pet loving 6 year old but just the illustrations and the subject matter will be enough to get her interest and attention. Thank you NetGalley for the free digital copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
