A heartbreaking and intense read. I’m not usually into reading heavier thrillers but this one kept me hooked.

Having recently finished “Keeping Lucy” by T. Greenwood, I am happy to have had the chance for the e-book; thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press!
This was an emotional story of a fierce "Mama Bear" protecting her young when she discovered the danger and tragic circumstances her Down Syndrome daughter was being subjected to as a resident at Willowridge "School." Securing her daughter's safety and the journey along the way, led to a new independence and strength. Fighting for what she knew was right with help and support from her childhood friend, made for an entertaining and at times, heart-wrenching story.

From my blog: Always With a Book:

A few years ago, I read Rust & Stardust by T. Greenwood and as heartbreaking as that book was, I knew I would be reading more from this author. When I saw she had another book coming out, I immediately requested it. Of course, life got busy and the book got pushed to the side, but I finally got to it and I loved it, as I knew I probably would.

T. Greenwood is an amazing storyteller. As heartbreaking as this latest story is, I still found myself completely captivated and unable to put this book down. I felt so many emotions reading this book, and there were characters I wanted to shake, but at the end of the day, I had to remember that this book took place in 1969 and things were different then.

This story is based on true events and I am glad that T. Greenwood wrote this story. I definitely think this would make an excellent book club selection as there is so much to unpack here and discuss. This book truly showcases just how far a mother will go to protect her child, especially when no one else will, in a time when women's voices were seldom heard.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It's an emotional roller coaster for sure, but it's so much more than that. It's thought-provoking and one that will stay with you long after you read that last page.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I had a hard time connecting with this book and was really frustrated at many points and eventually didn't finish it.

Another beautiful book by T. Greenwood. Loved Rust and Stardust and I enjoyed this one as well. It took a minute to pull me in, but once it did...I was all in.
I recommend this read!

I loved this story which was based on true events. Keeping Lucy is about the love of a mother and the strength of a woman. Against her husband’s wishes, this mother goes after her daughter and teaches her the meaning of love and family. T Greenwood hit this one out of the park. Keeping Lucy is a gut-wrenching story I couldn’t put down.

After reading one of T Greenwood's previous novels, I knew I wanted to pick this up and it did not disappoint! The author weaves together a very powerful and heartfelt story that completely captures the reader's attention.

Keeping Lucy did not pull me in immediately and there were some (minor) things that were hard to suspend disbelief for, but I'm glad I kept reading. The plight of the main character, Ginny, is just heartbreaking. What has happened to her daughter is just ... wow. It's so hard to believe that people would put anyone, especially children, through things like this. I am incredulous that these things really happened back then.

I thought the characterization was really good. The relationships between Ginny and her children and also her relationship with her best friend were so, so great. The character arcs here were are definitely worth sticking around for.

Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for a copy of this ARC.

Having the novel set in the 1970s really made this a unique, wonderful read. The author portrayed this world perfectly in my opinion. Can't go wrong with a good mother-daughter love story. Wonderful read, very different from rust and stardust, but this author can prove she can handle any story!

While definitely not the same caliber of Rust and Stardust for me Keeping Lucy was still an engaging read. Ginny awakes from giving birth to Lucy to discover her baby has been whisked away. Lucy was born with Down Syndrome. Apparently this was unacceptable to her father and grandfather who decide Lucy should be placed in an institution. Lucy resides there for 2 years until Ginny's best friend shows her some atrocious articles of Willowridge. Ginny checks Lucy out for a weekend visit that turns into a wild road trip.

I would have liked to learn more about Willowridge, I think it would've added more to the storyline for me. I would encourage you to Google Willowbrook State School to familiarize with the disgusting treatment of the real life patients.

Keeping Lucy is a devastatingly emotional journey that will you leave you questioning how we treat each other, children, and the expectations of family. It works on so many layers from the excitement of being on the run, to intense character development, and also societal critiques. Think you can read a book without crying? Wrong. Think you can walk away without wanting to slap the past and change the future? Wrong again. This shit gets real!

This is an exquisite read that will take to digest and recover from at the end, but it's worth every tear and every minute you spend on it.

A beautiful book. Vivid in description. Strong relationships between friends and mother & children. Only complaint is plot conveniences. Glad as someone who grew up in Florida to see Weeki Wachee Mermaid attraction represented. Lovely book.

This book was one of my favorites of the year. It’s a poignant but heartbreaking story of a mother’s love, inspired by true events. In 1969, Ginny gives birth to Lucy, who has Down Syndrome. Ginny’s husband, Ab, sends Lucy to a school for the “feeble minded” and Ginny tries to get over her grief and convince herself that it was for the best. However, two years later, Ginny’s best friend, Marsha, shows her an article exposing Lucy’s school for what it truly is- a terrible place that neglects children. Ginny sets off on a road trip with Marsha and her young son to rescue Lucy from the school, while fighting against her husband. This book was captivating from the beginning. I was invested in the characters and really cared about them, and everyone was so realistic. I loved how detailed the book was- it really described every scene, both terrible and wonderful. Overall, this was an amazing book about the power of a mother’s love and a fascinating and beautiful story based on the atrocities committed against children with Down Syndrome and other mental disorders during the 1900s.

A young married couple has a second child who is born with special needs. The mother, Ginny, is sedated and when she wakes up, she is told that her child had Down Syndrome and her husband had enrolled her in a special school. I absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down. My heart broke for the mother when she found out he4daughter was being mistreated at the school. The book jumps back and forth between the past and present chronicling Ginny and Ab early relationship and Ginny on the run with her children. My only complaint is that the book felt unfinished. I was still left with so many questions and I wanted to know more!

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. This was a great read (very tough at times) given the storyline. Great character development and over all just a good read. This author NEVER disappoints. Looking forward to recommending this to my reading community!

This book is about a woman giving birth to a down syndrome baby and the husband deciding to send the baby away to a special school and giving up custody of the child. It takes place in the 60s. After a newspaper reports on the horrific conditions at the school, the woman decides to visit her child after two years and is allowed to check her out for the weekend. The story moves on from there. A fast read with a happy ending. This wasn't really my cup of tea, but it kept me going to the end.
