4.5 Stars!

I thoroughly enjoyed this fabulous thriller! It's rare to find a perfectly plotted book with equally perfect pacing and tension, but Sheryl Browne hit the mark in The Second Wife. The story leads us on a trail of dark twists and turns to the best possible solution and satisfying ending. I rooted for the female protagonist all the way to the last page. I highly recommend adding this book to your 2019 reading list. Received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

Wow! I have to be honest here. This book started out I was frustrated with the lead gal, weak, simpering, a chronic victim! I was wrong on all accounts! So many twists and turns and the ending!? You will not see this coming! Great thriller!

While reading this book I had so many conflicting emotions . From annoyance, sympathy, curiosity to disappointment and more! Never a dull moment though that's for sure.

I have heard great things about Sheryl Browne’s books. But, I must confess this is the first one that I have read by the author.
Nicole has come out of an abusive relationship and thought she would never meet someone or trust a man again. But, then she meets Richard. Who is completely different to her ex. Not only is he a gentleman but, he also he is a good looking man with many admirers. First they are friends but, there romance blossoms quickly and they decide to marry. His daughter Olivia also moves in. But from the start, things become clear that the relationship is not as happy at it seems to be. Richard’s daughter keeps manipulating her father to get what she wants, that her and Richards relationships gets strained. He doesn’t believe what Nicole is saying about his daughter and thinks she is going mad. The only person Nicole can confide in is Rebecca. Things gets so bad that Nicole commits suicide.
I was excited to read this, from all the reviews that I have read of the other books Sheryl has written. I liked the idea of this story and it and it has its fair share of twists and turns and I didn’t see the ending coming. But, for me I thought the start of this story was really slow and it took into about a third way into the book until It really got going. There were no likeable characters in the story either.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book. 3 stars from me.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me an ARC of "The Second Wife" in exchange for an honest review.

Overall I thought the premise and idea for the book was interesting. Although I found Browne's writing style very easy to navigate through, the first half of the book was too slow-moving for my taste. By the time the book picked up momentum, I knew I was going to finish the book, but it wasn't something where I just couldn't wait for the pages to turn. While I find the dynamics between certain characters interesting, I had a hard time understanding how if Rebecca was such a close friend to Nicole, she would so easily become involved with her widow.

Really enjoyed this - well written and gripping. Didn’t quite keep me guessing until the end, but was a great book for a quick, immersive read.

WOW! Loved! This book sucked me in from the beginning all the way to the very end. I wish the end didn't go by so quickly with so many twists and turns. I like how the author builds on the story through each of the main characters perspective. At first I was not a fan of jumping back and forth to present year and last year, but as the story you progressed, you understood why the author chose this process.

Amazing plot!

Thank you #netgalley I can't wait to go read more of Sheryl Browne books!

I received a free e-copy of The Second Wife by Sheryl Browne from NetGalley for my honest review.

A cleverly written psychological thriller with fantastic characters and lots of twists.

Rebecca and Nicole are very good friends. Although Rebecca lives in France, they communicate all the time. Just like most friends, they confide in one another with everything including their secrets.

Nicole ends up getting married to a man named Richard who has a teenage daughter. Rebecca wasn't able to attend the wedding but as friends do they spoke in detail over the phone about the amazing wedding and her amazing new husband.

Rebecca soon gets word that Nicole has taken her own life. She is in shock and just can't believe the news. Rebecca goes to the funeral and tries to help Richard but also wants to find out what went wrong that caused Nicole to take her own life. She soon discovers why Nicole fell for Richard as she finds herself attracted to his charms as well. Who is responsible? Is Nicole falling for Richard? Is Richard really as perfect as he seems or is there something more to him? So much jealousy and so many lies.

This mystery is a twisty novel in which the reader tries to untangle the apparent suicide of a woman named Nicole who was recently married to Richard. Nicole was coming off of an abusive first marriage when she met Richard who was tall, handsome and almost too good to be true. In fact, one of the opening chapters is actually Nicole's funeral where the reader meets her good friend Rebecca who is trying to unravel the "why" behind Nicole's suicide. After meeting Richard and his daughter and the funeral, Rebecca is slowly drawn into the web of their lives and begins her own affair with Richard. This is a quirky mystery that will keep you on your toes!

This was an excellent read, kept up the suspense right to the end. There were times when i got a bit frustrated with Nicole and wanted her to wake up and do something about the abuse she was continually receiving, but I know that victims of mental and physical abuse often feel that they deserve it and rarely rebel against their persecutor. I found Rachel a very believable character as is Richard's daughter. You do wonder how the twist remained hidden for so long but deep down you knew that Rachel would eventually seek revenge for Nicole's death. This book was well written, , the pace was brilliant and the story-line original. I highly recommend

Here's a story of true love. The kind you thought you missed out on because your first choice was a huge fail. Nicole and Richard found each other after their other relationships failed. But after tragedy strikes, Nicole's best friend comes to Nicole's funeral to find out what exactly led to her friend's demise. She also comes to meet the husband Nicole had raved (and complained) about in so many of the letters she'd received.
If you have any experience reading the modern thrillers you'll know it from the beginning. You'll feel, see and smell what's going to happen. But then it doesn't. And it doesn't. And it doesn't. Then you start second guessing what could be going on.... and then it blindsides you and you are delighted. The author seems to enjoy giving you all the pieces you need to finally put it all together into a wonderfully paced novel.
I'm grateful to have received this advance copy from Netgalley/Bookouture. With many relationships under examination it helped that there were no periphery characters. Each one played an important role to the development of the story so that there were no fluff story lines. That was especially important since this played out from multiple points of view and spanned one or more years. My one frustration was in the letters/texts the two friends exchanged. Knowing how dire she felt her circumstances were becoming it's hard to believe Nicole didn't just pick up the phone and call her friend. Or that Rebecca didn't immediately call to check on Nicole. Yes, we are all busy but come on!!
This is the first book I have read from Sheryl Browne and will certainly be adding more from her to my TBR list.

Two best friends : Rebecca and Nicole. Rebecca comes back for her best friend's funeral. She is shocked to learn she committed suicide. She thought she had the perfect life, perfect husband... She will uncover the truth as she gets closer to Nicole's husband Richard and his daughter. Things are never what they seem... Better be careful...

Different points of views, goes from past to present which is good to slowly get into the minds of the characters.

My third time reading Sheryl Browne. I love her style, her way with words, descriptions, character development... I always enjoy her books!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book. This is my honest review.

Sheryl Browne has a great writing style, slowly building up to a dramatic finale.
The Second Wife is told from a few different people's perspectives. I loved this because I like to read what is going on in each characters mind, it gave an extra dimension to the book.
Rebecca is trying to find out what happened to her friend, and in the process is drawn into a twisted web of lies.
I can't say too much without giving spoilers but if you like psychological thrillers The Second Wife is well worth a read.
I look forward to reading more of Sheryl Browne's work.

Thanks Netgalley, Bookouture, Sheryl Browne for an ARC of the novel.

I loved the author's debut novel and was eager to read her next book, and I wasn't disappointed.
This is a creepy psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns as well as unreliable characters with hidden secrets.
All make the ingredients for an exciting and gripping read, although I was expecting more from the ending but this is just me, and this didn't detract from my overall enjoyment.

I would recommend this novel to all fans of psychological thrillers, and can't wait to read sheryl's next offering.

I enjoyed this book, it has strong characters and the reader is intrigued by Richard, this gorgeous sexy man who seems so perfect, who loved his wife so much .... Enter Rebecca, her friend, who feels she needs to establish the true nature of their relationship. Lots of twists and suspense for the reader! An exciting read. I was slightly disappointed in the ending but this did not stop my overall enjoyment of the book.

I received this book as an ARC, and while the premise is interesting, it’s the latest in a string of similar novels. Unfortunately, the unreliable narrator/plot twist/plot twist again isn’t as well done in this story. Nicole, frankly, and her needy persona, doesn’t warrant enough respect from the reader to anchor the whole plot the way she does. Rebecca, I had to eye roll at, bc in the quest for justice for her best friend, she somehow ends up with her friend’s widowed husband? Hmm...

Still, the plot was competent enough, but the last third and the rushed resolution of Nicole’s mysterious suicide...again, it just wasn’t engaging nor satisfying. All in all, there are similar novels that do it better.
