One of those books which are good in some parts, but not so good in others. Claire and Angus are newly engaged after meeting 4 months ago buy a house from Mark who reminds her of her university romance which didn’t end well. It veers from now to five years ago. It’s only after getting most of the way through this novel that the relevance of Claire’s job becomes apparent, but that didn’t make it less boring sadly and I skimmed those sections. Anyone wanting to know more about these things could read non fiction, search the web or simply watch or listen to news bulletins. Claire?? What can be said about her? Infuriating, weird and self absorbed spring to mind and you begin to wonder how on earth she got a job like this. None of the other characters were likeable in any way. I did enjoy the way the book was written and it was certainly a story with a difference, even if I didn’t wholly love it!

This was an easy read, and enjoyable, although I dont think it was as tense as it could have been. Still an enjoyable enough read.

The Couple begins with the introduction of Claire and Angus as they are in the process of celebrating their engagement. Having not been together long, Claire an immigration lawyer who works at the home office and Angus who runs a chain of small hotels look like the perfect couple but when Claire’s step-dad has a little slip up during the speech it’s apparent that maybe all isn’t quite how it seems.
Claire was a likeable character but some of the decisions she made were extremely stupid and I couldn’t help but feel like giving her a shake and telling her to get a grip. As the reader I had an idea of what was going on or about to happen but obviously as this is a book and it’s only fiction I couldn’t exactly tell her. Very frustrating indeed.
Through out the story we’re taken back to when Claire was in a relationship with her ex Daniel, this gave the story a bit more of a twist and along with everything that was going on in present day it made for quite a tense and gripping read.
The Couple takes the reader on one heck of a journey from past to present, it’s quite fast paced with many twists and turns. It’s one of those stories where you think you know where it might be going then boom, you’re taken off in a different direction.
A thoroughly enjoyable read and I look forward to reading more from Sarah Mitchell.

5 STARS!!!

Ahhhhh this was so so sooooo goooood! Read this in one sitting....brilliant!

If you think the description of this book looks intriguing...I promise you, there is soooo much more to come.

Book Description

"Following a whirlwind four-month romance, lawyer Claire and hotel entrepreneur Angus are engaged to be married. Happy and successful, and ready to start their new life together, Claire and Angus find what they believe to be the perfect home.

But when Claire meets Mark, the man selling them the house, he looks eerily familiar. He looks exactly like the man she loved five years ago, the man she couldn’t bear to lose.

As Claire finds herself irresistibly drawn to Mark and crosses lines she never thought she’d cross, Angus’ behavior becomes increasingly suspicious. Soon Claire doesn’t know whether she can trust Mark, Angus… or even herself."

You don't get psychological thrillers better than this one. From start to finish the story did not slow once...fast-paced and deliciously dark.

The storyline, characters, interactions were really well-developed.

This was my first book by Sarah Mitchell and she goes right on top of my favorite authors for 2019. I would definitely read more of this author's work in the future.

The past is the greatest optical illusion. ...

You’ve got to love an unreliable narrator- they make the most fascinating reads and the Couple by Sarah Mitchell is a great example of this.
From the first pages of this novel we get an uneasy feeling that Claire, who can turn her beauty on and off, Clare, who seemingly has it all including a great job with the Home office and a brand new rich fiance Angus, is not telling us the whole truth. There is plenty of hints and small details, so easy to overlook, but the blurb did not lie- whatever you think you know and understand about Claire is wrong and the big twist will take you aback..
I loved the setting. Sarah Mitchell chose The Immigration tribunal as Claire’s working place to make sure we make our own opinion of Claire’s character and her choices of actions in life. Things are rarely black and white and she obviously has her own particular sense of justice. Claire is a strange mixture of strength and weakness, which is evident in her being so ready to give in to her obsession.
The Couple is one of the most gripping books I have read this year and I can highly recommend it to other lovers of mystery and thriller genre.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture publisher for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

This was a fantastic read and I thoroughly enjoyed every last chapter. It follows the story of young couple Claire and Angus who are engaged to be married after a whirlwind 4-month romance. The couple decide to buy a new home and during Claire's first viewing of their new house she realises that the current owner Mark bears an uncanny likeness to Daniel, the ex-boyfriend from university that she has never got over losing. Claire finds herself helplessly drawn to Mark and before long her work within the immigration department of the Home Office and her relationship with Angus is suffering.
Once Claire and Angus actually move into the house Claire's attraction to the shady character that is Mark intensifies and she begins to find out things about her fiancé that have her questioning the relationship and left me wondering who the real 'bad guy' was!
The writer references Claire's previous relationship with Daniel and the story veers into flashback all throughout the book gradually revealing what happened to Claire & Daniel - a wonderful twist that I certainly did not see coming!
An unusual but thrilling read although I would echo what previous reviewers have said about the slightly rushed ending which I found a bit manic.
A solid 4 stars and thanks to Netgalley and publishers for the ARC.

3 stars*.

This book was recommended to me and based on the blurb I was intrigued. It is the first book by Sarah Mitchell that I've read.

The Couple begins with immigration lawyer Claire and her fiance, hotelier Angus entering their engagement party. Things become awkward quickly when Claire's stepfather toasts Claire and her former boyfriend. Lots of foreshadowing and vague references to a bad end between her and the ex leads one to understand that Claire's family did not expect her to get it together and be preparing to ride off into the sunset.

Angus sends Claire to inspect a home he found that he wants to quickly make an offer on. Upon entering the house, Claire is instantaneously overwhelmingly attracted to the owner, Mark, whom reminds her of her ex. Illogically, she finds herself in a very compromising position with Mark. As the story moves on, Claire consistently makes terrible self-destructive choices to be with Mark when it makes no sense whatsoever.

As much as it is touted as a psychological thriller, I wasn't so much concerned for Claire's safety as I was questioning her mental health. The "mystery'" was not complicated.

However, I did enjoy the writing and I thought some of the supporting characters were particularly appealing.

*With thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for this honest review.

Wow! I devoured this book within three days I couldn’t get enough and was left wanting more, a fantastic read. A thrilling love triangle of secrets and a rollercoaster ride!

A young couple are looking for a home together. She arrives at an address to find that the owner looks like her first serious boyfriend. From that point, the story has her torn between the two men and the mystery surrounding them all. It's a complicated plot that sometimes found me turning back the pages to see if I had missed something. The story was a good one, just didn't quite flow for me. Still, it was worth my reading time, which is one of the best recommendations a reader can make.

I had high hopes for this novel but it turned out leaving me rather deflated. For me, the pace of the plot seemed to drag at times and that could be because I found the three main characters, thoroughly dislikable. The end of the boom became rather confusing, one chapter in particular made no sense in the grand scheme of things, but again, perhaps I had lost interest by that time. Thanks to Netgalley for the arc.

I am struggling to review this book.
I didn't find it an enjoyable read, the plot was thin and too far fetched and the character of Claire irritated the life out of me. How could someone who had been to university and had a job in the Home Office be so stupid and naive?
Sorry but it just wasn't for me.

Suspenseful, Psychological Thriller!

Claire and Angus are engaged to be married after knowing each other only four months. They are looking for the perfect dream house to start their life together and then Claire happens to meet the owner and is stunned to realize he is the mirror image (although quite a bit older) than her deceased lover and soulmate who is always in the back of her mind. Claire is instantly attracted to Mark and this is just the beginning of a journey of secrets, lies, deceit and possible danger.

I found this book well-written and fast paced with many twists and turns where at times I was holding my breath. Unfortunately, there was a huge twist at one point and I thought it was a typo (No Typo) and from there the story fell flat for me since I had a difficult time trying to put the story back together although I am sure many other readers may love this very different twist and consider it the icing on the cake!

I want to thank the publisher Bookouture and Netgally for the opportunity to read this book.

I do recommend this book to readers who enjoy psychological mysteries and have given a rating of 3 Twisty 🌟🌟🌟 stars!!

Thank you Netgalley for my copy of The Couple by Sarah Mitchell. I found this book to be a very unusually intriguing novel. What made this unusual we're the actions of protagonist Claire who is an immigration lawyer. She has had an all encompassing, whirlwind relationship with Angus and they are on a quest to find a home together. They view a property in London and Claire is instantly attracted to the vendor Mark. Mark reminds her of her ex Daniel. I liked Claire but I found her actions to be really reckless. She views the properly without Angus and sparks fly between her and Mark. They quickly start a physical relationship. I found the lace of the story quite slow in the first half which I like, you get lots of details into Claire's job, her previous relationships and her current one to Angus. This gives Claire depth and you really despair of her as she keeps on making some really bad decisions. We see loads of twists and turns and the book quickly increases in pace to tie all the loose connections. Claire's life changes in ways she could never have imagined, the lies spiral out of control making for an enjoyable and complex read. Intelligent writing, this is definitely a thriller with a difference. A solid 4 stars from me.

Disclaimer: I received this book from Netgally for review purposes.

Well that was... interesting?

The writing was good and it definitely kept me glued in, but the more it went on the more it seemed to kind of seem a little ehhh to me. While there was twists and turns galore one of the main ones seemed really obvious to me, unfortunately. A lot of the rest of the book was kind of just a shrug, sort of like a who cares? Which is a bummer.

Still, kept me glued for a while and was definitely interesting lol
