Although I enjoyed this book, it is very unlike her other books. After learning that it is a reprint, it makes more sense that her current writing style is very different. I did find the characters confusing at some parts and found myself "plowing" through to finish it. I do recommend this book, but not as highly as her newer novels. Jojo Moyes is a very talented author, regardless of her different writing styles. Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy and the choice to give an honest opinion.

Something about JoJo Moyes' writing is more than the sum of its parts. The story and the writing combine to make a memorable and enjoyable read that touches more deeply than one would expect. Although I found the story initially hard to follow, the various narrations eventually grew together in a satisfying and compelling way. For fans of Moyes's previous books, you won't be disappointed in The Peacock Emporium. For new readers, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the depth of impact that Moyes' book offers.

The Peacock Emporium is Jojo Moyes' third novel and is being released for readers in the US apprx. 15 years after it was first released in the UK. As it's an older book, it doesn't quite have the flow of Me Before You and its related titles, but it's still a solid read for fans of Ms. Moyes' work, with a dual timeline (1960s and "now", Athene and her daughte, Suzanna, who deals with revelations re: Athene) that works pretty well. I wouldn't recommend it for readers new to her work, but for her many fans this will be a welcomed and enjoyable read. And the cover is gorgeous!

This is a book you can really sink your teeth into! A young woman, Suzanna Peacock, is pressed by her husband to start a family. Unready and unwilling, she makes a deal with him: if she can open her own business and run it for a year, she'll have a baby at the end of that year. Unhappy with her home life and discouraged at the prospect of becoming a parent, she opens the 'Peacock Emporium' and fills it with pretty bibelots that it's doubtful anyone in her community, other than herself, will appreciate. But the Emporium gives her something that money can't buy, friends and self-respect, Through it we see her personality grow and we discover how unanswered questions from the past can create ambivalence in the future.

Thanks to the publishers and to NetGalley for the read!

I usually love Jojo Moyes books, but I didnt particularly care for this one. I found the plot and chapter layout confusing, and I quickly lost interest without finishing the book. Since reading the other reviews I see this is a reprint of an earlier book, which makes sense, since this book is nothing like her others.

This is quite a departure from Moyes earlier novels, far more complex and sophisticated. The author sweeps through many years and develops the characters and engages the reader on a very different level from her other books.

The Peacock Emporium is a small store opened by the clearly depressed Suzanna Peacock, struggling with her marriage and her family, while trying to find an identity. She is surrounded by a loving family, but she is unhappy despite all the positives around her.

Moyes weaves in the story of Suzanna’s mother Vivi, and her rather unusual path to marriage and motherhood. Despite being faced with a blended family, secrets, and the care of an elderly relative., she remains a strong and positive force in Suzanna’s life.

It is because of the store that she manages to extend and open her world. Her bonding with Jessie creates a relationship that takes her out of her self-imposed isolation. An unexpected stranger from Argentina, Ale, awakens her spirit and allows her to find a future.

There are so many topics in the novel, ripe for discussion in a reading group or seminar. Moyes gives the reader a lot to think about in this complex and satisfying novel.

I have read many of JoJo Moyes’s books and generally have liked them either very much or well enough to breeze through them. I missed The Peocock Emporium when it was published originally and looked forward to catching up with it. Unfortunately I made it through less than half of the novel before turning to something else. While Moyes keeps the story going I just could not care about her characters. This one just didn’t stand the test of time for me. I hope it’s more enjoyable to other readers.

I read this years ago and was surprised at how well I remembered it. Because of the author's name, I am sure it will be popular. Thank you for sharing this with me.

Jojo Moyes never fails to make me laugh out loud and cry while reading one of her books. The Peacock Emporium included. A delightful and detailed snapshot of a certain class and certain lifestyle that is terribly fascinating. I loved it and couldn't put it down

This story of a mother and daughter and the conflict and secrets between them was a fun and compelling read. Athene, a child 1960’s , was brought up with everything she could possible want, spoiled rotten by her well to do parents. When she has the ultimate fall from grace she disappears, leaving the product of that fall, a baby daughter, Suzanna, with her parents, leaving them to raise the little girl. Years later, Suzanna is a married woman with questions about what she really wants for her future. She returns home to open a little coffee/bake shop that she names the Peacock Emporium. She also learns more about the mother she never really knew, while getting to know the rest of her extended family. A reprint of one of Moyes’s earlier books, this is sure to please the author’s legions of fans
