I so enjoyed this title. This is a very thought-provoking story that tugs at your heart. The characters in this story are interesting and human. The situations and characters behavior felt real. This story shows the kindness in the world as well as the prejudicial unkindness. The journey that Raymond makes is inspiring. I didn't want it to end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union for an advanced read in exchange for this review.

Raymond is 17 and feels like an outcast.  His dad is remarried, and he feels like his mom and stepdad don't like him.  His only friend has moved away.  He soon befriends a 92 year old woman whose opening statement is "Have you seen Luis Valez?"  He soon finds himself on a mission to find him to help her.

Catherine Ryan Hyde writes heartfelt fiction, and this book is exactly that.  At first, I wondered if this was going to be a book where Raymond knocked on every door to find Luis with no such luck.  It's not even close.  Raymond's dear friend, Mildred, is blind and a survivor. Although she begins to rely on Luis for errands, she teaches him so much more about life.  What a touching story.

I read an ARC of this book provided by NetGalley.
Another inspiring piece of work by prolific author Catherine Ryan Hyde.
The plot is very simple. The first half of the book is about a 17-year-old boy’s search for Luis Velez, a man who had been providing regular assistance to a 92-year-old blind woman also living in the boy’s apartment building. But, without notice, Luis Velez was no longer helping the old woman, so the young boy befriended her and made it his business to find Luis Velez or find out what happened to him. The second half of the book deals with the ramifications of the boy’s findings.
The characters, it almost goes without saying in a book written by this author, are outstanding. The theme of the book can be summarized by saying: Life is tough, but you need to appreciate the good aspects of life and not be beaten down by the bad aspects of life that affect EVERYONE.
Reading this book strengthens one’s spirit and makes you want to be the better person that has a positive impact on other’s lives.

Wow! What an amazing book. It is going to the top of my Best Books of 2019 list. Raymond is a 17 year old boy who doesn't think he fits in anywhere. Not at home with his mother, step father and step sisters. Not with his father and step mother. Not at school after his only friend moves away. There is a stray cat that he feeds. Mildred is a 92,year old blind Holocaust survivor. When Mildred's caregiver stops coming around she is lost. When Raymond comes across her in his apartment building she asks "Have You Seen Luis Velez?" This book has so much feeling in it, my heart ached for many of the characters. I highly recommend this book and this Author. Thanks to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Catherine Ryan Hyde has written a beautiful book of two generations, and the relationships they make through chance and tragedy.
An unlikely friendship between a 17 year old boy and a 92 year old woman, crosses age and race barriers, to warm your heart.
Personally, to me, one of her best.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
A story about an unlikely friendship between a young seventeen year old boy and his elderly blind neighbor. About prejudices we all have and don't always realize. About doing more to bring someone happiness.
I absolutely loved the character of Raymond. He just wants a place to belong and doesn't seem to fit in anywhere, even in his own family. Then he finds friendship with this old lady who teaches him he can make his own family, his own place to belong. Such a beautiful heartwarming story.

Another beautifully written book by Catherine Ryan Hyde about a young man named Raymond and an older woman named Millie who came together through unfortunate circumstances. They were able to learn about from each other and about themselves. All while making new friends along the way.

Thank you very much to NetGalley and Catherine Ryan Hyde for this honor to review this novel Have You Seen Luis Velez..
Whew, where do I begin? Ms.Catherine Ryan Hyde is my favorite author. I want to do her writing justice in my review. What an amazingly touching novel. I wept from happiness, the injustice, the kindness of Raymond Jaffe and his new friends.
Mildred Gutermann, A 92-year-old, blind German Jew who narrowly escaped the Holocaust, has been alone since her caretaker disappeared. She turns to Raymond and 16 year old for help, and as he tries to track Luis down, deep and unexpected friendship blossoms between the two. With two sentences " Do you know Luiz Velez?". "Have you seen him?"
Then the magic begins. Both are in need of one another. Both learn valuable lessons.A cellist says the instrument
thas the same sad -to beautiful ratio as life. It is life and the novel's story. Have You Seen Luis Velez is full of sad -to beautiful ratio.
I would give all my stars all five thousand to Have You Seen Luis Velez. I will follow the lessons learned.
Thank you so very much Ms.Catherine Ryan Hyde for always keeping a light in my heart.

I read every book of Catherine Ryan Hyde that I can get my hands on. This is one of my favorites. Have You Seen Luis Velez is a story of kindness, loss, sadness, joy, and so many other emotions. The subjects addressed in this book are so timely. I think that reading this book together with a teenager and having discussions about difficult topics would be a gift to both parties. I rarely highlight passages in books but this book is filled with underlined sentences and thoughts that I hope to remember for a long time. Read this book!

I loved everything about this book! The young man's compassion for the older
neighbor is something very rare. I enjoyed it so much. I also loved the lessons
he learned as he completed task after task for his blind neighbor. I loved the hurdles
he goes through for her. Also, this is a beautiful story about life, love, and family.
Especially family that is no blood relation.

The book flows well and keeps your attention page after page. I loved the characters,
I didn't want to see the book come to an end. Even though the ending was beautiful as
well. This is only the second book I have read by this writer, I have loved both of them!
