Did not enjoy this book at all. With reading this from start to end. I would normally DNF, however I was hoping that in places it picked up. It would remain on the up. However this was not the case for me.

Not my kind of book. I just couldn't finish it! The writing wasn't intriguing and the plot was flat.

Rise of the Hearts: Rebirth is the first book I have read from this author. It is not your typical book and nothing like what I expected. However, there were times when it was a bit confusing.

Here is the synopsis:
Months have passed since Nate has met Traeh, the deity of love with the pink heart-shaped irises. He's gotten used to his new powers she has given him and feels invincible, at least until someone predicts he's going to die a violent death. Nate becomes cautious and takes a break from his hobby of killing disloyal cheaters and gold diggers to avoid any unnecessary trouble. But trouble finds him because of his past actions and forces the hand of a powerful foe, pushing him to his limits and forcing him to deal with his inner demons.

I thought this started out interesting but it was just a bizarre book. I never really could understand what was happening. The ending was terrible. It just stop in the middle of nowhere. It was random and abrupt.

Review: Another book I had to DNF at 15%. I felt like this book had a lot of potential, the short story was intriguing, but the book is jumpy and disjointed. The book doesn’t flow well and is confusing. I’m not sure if this is a translation or not, but it seems like a badly translated book. I’ve read translated books before and they’ve been amazing, but if this one of them then the translator did a bad job.

Verdict: Not for me.

Wow...this book was so creepy because it totally speaks to the ugly side of people. This book gave me a book hangover--as in, I can't stop thinking about it or let it go. Brilliantly written with a unique twist on humanity.

This was a strange little story that started out quite strong, yet was a little confusing. I am unsure if there was a book prior, but if there was, that would make a lot more sense. However, this was still a fun horror story. A brother and sister have powers that are definitely anti-heroic, and they struggle with them. Along with way, they run into others that are just like them, people with unusual powers, but none of them positive. Though not everyone is evil. It is a dystopia of human superpowers.

This short story looks like it part of a much larger and quirkier universe. If so, I did like the writing enough that I would continue on this strange journey just to see what happens next.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an advanced copy to read. All opinions are my own.

Luckily for me I don't let other reviews decide what books I will read. Because I actually liked this book. Its got a kind of Dexter vibe with a supernatural twist. The hero plays judge, jury and executioner, but travels in the body of other people to commit his crimes. He was given this power by a deity. He also keeps a dark madness locked up inside of him in a mental cage. It comes out and takes over when needed. He also feeds on killing.
Meanwhile he is dealing with his sister and the deity that is controlling her superpowers and the madness this brings.
Although the writing can seem to be disjointed, I thinks it is because of the madness in the character. It feels like a comic book with descriptions instead of pictures. Looking forward to the next installment.

The story has developed in an original way, and I liked it better than the first book's one, but what definitely surprised me was the total change in the writing style! The author has improved so much since last year. Both the plot and the dialogues work a lot better.
Here’s what I didn't fancy:
1. The fact that sometimes the portrayal of the characters is too semplicistic - some girls seem to be very very flat, and even if I can understand what the author wanted to show us (the worst type of female being he ever met, probably) I thought it was too much.
2. I still don't like Kim, but I have to admit she's getting a more definite and enjoyable person as the story progresses.
3. Everything happens with no pauses along the way, in a continuous stream of accidents which is honestly somewhat psychedelic. I would suggest to introduce breaks and "normal" events in Nate's life.
Anyway, I loved the horror parts, they're freaky and dreadful and also something new.
Many thanks to both NetGalley and the author for a free copy of the ebook.

Received a digital ARC of this book via NetGalley. Had I realized this was a sequel that I had not read the first book of I probably wouldn’t have requested access to it to begin with. I started reading and felt like I was missing something. So, I tracked down a copy of the first book so that this one would make a little more sense. Turns out I didn’t have to; there are so many plot holes and craziness regardless which book you read. Honestly wish I had never read either book.

The brother-sister relationship is so weird; they are weirdly attached & protective of each other. Every sentence Kim addresses Nate as “Bro.” I don’t know of anyone who calls attention to their familial relationships that often in conversations. There are characters who always address Nate as “best friend” or “dude;” these nouns are used every single sentence! You can have a convo without addressing someone every sentence.

These characters are also supposed to be college age yet dialog is written like they are in the mid-teens. You even have adults who are not acting like real adults during traumatic events.

I feel like there are a lot of good scenes that could have been expanded throughout the book instead of squishing so many pieces together. There are some parts of the story that abruptly end and characters carry on like nothing is wrong. Or some pieces of the story just appear with no explanation.

The book was hard to follow. I love a great book with magic at the forefront, however this missed the mark for me. I would not recommend this book to anyone. It needs a lot of work.

I’m not really sure what to make of this one. The visualization was good, but the story left me with mixed feelings.. the main character wasn’t that interesting and seemed a bit dull. I assume there was some symbolism about not cheating since he was going around killing people who weren’t being faithful. The writing itself was well enough, but wasn’t for me.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

Rise of the Hearts: Rebirth is the second book in Antoine Bonner's Rise of the Hearts series. Using Goodreads' rating system, I gave this book 3 stars. I gave the first book only 1 star. It was a challenge to even finish the first novel.

I liked Rebirth and do not think it was because I was familiar with the characters since I could not relate to them in the first novel. The writing improved since the last novel. In the first one, the story did not flow but it flowed well in Rebirth.

The first novel is NOT intended for Young Adults. Based on the description, I had mistakenly thought it was appropriate for younger readers. There are several passages that are not appropriate for young adults. I cannot think of any passages that would not be appropriate in the second book but still feel the series in not a young adult series.

This novel is only 100 pages long and is a very quick read. The story felt as if it was an episode in the middle of a television series. It felt as if it was only part of a story. I would read the next episode.

I was surprised to see that Rise of the Hearts got a sequel. The first book was all over the place with very little explanation. This second installment is better but can still be spit shined.
Nate has adapted to like with powers from the deity Traeh. He is content jumping body to body to take out romantic cheaters and gold diggers. But life is torn asunder when someone arrives from his past. Nate must learn to live with teh darkness inside of him while dealing with the fact that he and his sister aren't the only one with powers.
Rebirth is better than the original. The story is streamlined and exciting. The characters are still pretty flat, with only Nate getting a little growth. I did enjoy his inner struggle with his ark side; hat helped add depth to his personality that the other characters need.
Antoine Bonner’s biggest flaw though is it still lacks mythology. I don’t mean the idea of secret societies and deities. I mean the overall, mythology of the world. How does it all fight together? Why is this happening? Each new piece is interesting but the readers have no understand of a larger world.
An easy read, Rebirth is better than its predecessor and we see the growth of the author with in this work.

I want to say thank you to NetGalley for this free copy.

I went into this book very intrigued because of the synopsis but the book fell really flat for me. The characters had these really cool powers but I felt like there wasn’t a whole lot of development with the characters.

I will give this credit that it was a fast read that I got through quickly but my overall enjoyment was not high.

I don't even know how to rate this. The writing was terrible. So terrible in fact, I couldn't even make it far enough to form an actual opinion of the content.

I just couldn't get into this book. It may just be that it's not my cup of tea but I try really hard to finish books and I couldn't justify the time it took to read. I'm sure other people would love to read this though.

Rise of the Hearts: Rebirth written by Antoine Bonner is part of a series, which that part was not really apparent on the synopsis from the book. That being said, I tried to read it as a stand alone. I managed to finish reading it- and usually I am a fast reader. This was not a quick read for me, mostly because I lost interest somewhere after the first third of the book. The special powers that Nate has are just not enough to keep the flow going in the book. The book has an interesting plot line but needs better editing in terms of flow. I felt it was hard to connect with Nate or his sister, Kim the two main characters in the novel. I will say that the first few scenes caught my attention.

This book was rather difficult to follow or get invested in. It felt like I was dropped in the middle of the story and the attempts to explain what happened prior to the book didn't really make me more invested in the book - they made me less interested in the story. It seemed too convoluted, but also not that well thought out.
