I really liked this book! It is a great way to introduce a new craft into your handmade repertoire. I like the way this book is set up, the instructions are clear and you will actually want to do the projects that are provided! I will look for any further weaving or crafting books from Lindsey Campbell, I am very impressed!

Fiber arts are making a comeback, and this book is a good start for anyone wanting to learn to weave. From materials and yarn types, to different difficulties of projects, there's something for everyone. Lots of step-by-step instructions with photos accompanying each step, which I always appreciate.

If you’re new to the art of weaving, this is a brilliant book for learning the techniques. The explanations, diagrams and photos make for great tutorials on the basic skills up to intermediate level. There’s a great introductory section on tools, including how to make your own loom, as well as discussion of the different types of yarn that can be used to achieve different effects.

Although the book is American, British terms and equivalents are listed so this shouldn’t prove a problem for readers in the UK.

There are 17 projects, from basic to more complex. This was the only area where I felt disappointed although I admit this is not because of any lack of inspiration from the author; rather, the designs and styles did not appeal to me personally; they seemed representative sort-of 60s/70s ‘hippie’-era style with a modern take, and I would have liked a couple of more traditional designs and/or ethnic designs from around the world, as well as some more interesting colours (the majority featured used ‘natural’ and, to me quite dull, colours).

All that said, style is of course very subjective and I mention this not as a criticism but as a help to those choosing between various offerings and wanting to know what’s inside the cover! Also, my personal reticence about the projects doesn’t take away from the fact that I think the teaching chapters are really excellent, so anyone could learn the elements of weaving and use their knowledge to source other books/patterns (or their imagination!) for projects of a style to suit them.

I’ve been wanting to get into weaving, and Welcome to Weaving looks like the perfect intro book. It gives a good overview and description of materials needed, as well as step-by-step instructions on techniques. I especially appreciate the pictures that accompany each step since I am a visual learner. I will refer to this book often as I begin my new hobby!

Thanks to netgalley for providing this book in exchange for an honest review.

I always felt an attraction to yarn crafts. Crochet was my first love and soon followed knitting. But I never (until now) gave myself the experience of trying weaving. I saw pondered over starter kits with small looms at various crafts stores, yet I never grabbed one. I was intimidated, to be honest. Until this book came along. Welcome to weaving to me!

The countless photos showing step by step instructions showed me that is fairly simple to start a weaving project. And, yes, there are some techniques that will not suit a newbie like me, until I get those basics straight. But that is something beautiful about this book too. Is not something that will give you only the starter techniques, and live you longing for more. There is plenty to learn here.

Projects found in the book are truly lovely! They seem something that came out of an Anthropologie store. They are just a few projects, but with many instructions at the beginning of the books, I can see how it was hard to fit more projects.

The author encourages you to work on your basic stitches first, before moving onto a “real project”, which is great to be reminded of, when you just want to jump to those projects in the end.

I particularly liked the instructions on making your own loom, because I would prefer to have a DIY instead of buying one until I can be sure I will enjoy weaving. I already have an overflowing crafts room, so I try my best not to add something that won’t be used.

In summary, this book has all the instructions you need to get started. How to build your own loom, choosing fibers to work with, basic stitches and techniques, advanced techniques like embellishments and finishing, and more importantly projects that will produce a “final object” you can be proud off, and has the potential of looking like it was bought from one of those fancy and expensive stores.

I loved this book. As someone who has always been interested in weaving, this book made the work look simple enough to try with wonderful outcomes. It even gave me ideas for other creative projects in sewing and knitting!

The steps were easy to follow and the images included made it all the easier to work through. Each project is so unique and on a doable scale. I really enjoyed the use of unconventional materials (weaving with zippers anyone?). From bags to wall hangings, this book has got you covered. Check out their site below.

A very practical guide for the beginning weaver. It includes discussion of the types of looms (including how to make one), materials, some basic and intermediate techniques and some projects for practice. A very thoughtful, well planned book that should be a fine addition to either a public library or a weaver's own collection. Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this title. #WelcomeToWeaving #NetGalley

I was delighted to find this informative and easy to read introduction to weaving. As someone who has always wanted to try weaving (but has felt too intimidated by all of the equipment, and nomenclature involved), Welcome to Weaving has been a godsend. Author Lindsey Campbell has simply and clearly demystified this very complex and ancient art.

Campbell gently walks her readers through the process of gathering the materials needed and even gives instructions on making a simple loom. She defines the terms used in weaving clearly, offering photos throughout. By encouraging the reader to practice on the basics before beginning a "real" project, she ensures the reader's success from the start. From there, Campbell offers techniques ranging from basic at first to increasingly more advanced which offer the aspiring weaver the chance to spread your wings and try one of the many beautiful projects included in this very helpful guide. I have looked at (and purchased) other weaving books only to be discouraged by the lack of clear explanations. This will no doubt quickly become the beginners' "go to" book for weaving.

I am excited to get started weaving! Thanks Ms. Campbell!

I found this book interesting and detailed, the projects seemed more decorative then useful, but great ideas.
When my mum died I actually found my old children's loom and I am so glad that I kept it, I will certainly give weaving a try now.
Thank you

"Welcome to Weaving" is great beginners guide to weaving. Our school has just begun an after school textile club and we are weaving and sewing. The students absolutely love making things and have begun coming to the library at lunch to continue some of their work. This book would be a great addition for our collection to show samples of textile making.

This book is a thing of beauty. I have always wanted to try weaving and this book has inspired me to have a go. I really loved the minimalist projects as opposed to other more colourful ones I have seen.

The book covers a wide variety of topics from how to build your first loom, materials explored and projects that will appeal to all skill levels. A beautiful book worthy of a space on your coffee table ready to dip in and out of when your creativity urge beckons.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for my chance to read this inspirational book .

I love this book. I have recently become interested in fiber arts other than my normal crochet and this is a great book for my beginner level. It contains really clear and concise instructions along with many photos which are always easier to understand than illustrations in my opinion. She even has instructions on how to make a loom. There are quite a few projects some of which are a bit unusual ( A chandelier anyone?). I can't wait to get started!

Over the many years I have been weaving I have seen crafty books on fixed loom crafts come and go. They are all the same in their essence and are of little interest to me. Ms Campbell covers the same ground.

If you have a child with an interest in yarn crafts, then a book like this could help improve visualization and planning. But I would buy a used one from somewhere or get on from a library. I would not buy one of these expensive new editions (any author, any publisher) for any reason.

If the interest is a serious one, then buy a real weaving textbook (Mary Black, for instance) and adapt the techniques to a fixed frame loom.

Lindsey Campbell's Welcome to Weaving: the Modern Guide is pretty comprehensive. I've seen a few books on tapestry and they're all a little different. An easy tutorial helps you to make your own loom that can be used to complete each project. Learn basic terms and skills for beginner weavers, such as warp and weft, and how to keep your sides straight. Sections on intermediate techniques and concepts, such as patterns and how to add embellishments, give you room to grow your skills. This is a really good beginning weaving book. There are lots of step-by-step picture instructions and lots of helpful tips and tricks

I received a copy through NetGalley in exchange for review.

As a weaver, on floor looms, not tapestry, I'm always interested in the more stationary techniques of tapestry, and of the different ways of finishing the pieces off.
Lindsey Campbell's Welcome to Weaving: the Modern Guide is pretty comprehensive.
I've seen a few books on tapestry and they're all a little different.

This one covers pretty much everything you need to know to get started on tapestry. Yes those beautiful fancy little weavings you can hang on your walls.
Helps you build your own loom, throughly explains fibers, finishing techniques, embellishments, alternative to use as warp, how to form shapes, tufting, a few styles of weave (it's pretty minimal on this, and doesn't teach you many standardly used weaves). but does give different techniques for creating shapes, and patterns, how to connect them (so you don't get a broken gap in the fabric), for tying fringe, and presents several projects.
If you are visually taught, this book has photos of every single step. Which for me on some of these, that even I didn't know was extremely helpful.

If you are interested more in weaving it's self I'd look else where, you aren't going to find what you are looking for here. But if you want to learn tapestry weaving, this is perfect.
