I had never read this author before but I really liked this book. The characters are interesting and the story was deliciously dark and fast moving.

This was a VERY slow burn - so slow that I almost put it down for good. I'm glad I didn't - it picked up and I finally found my stride with the characters, such that I felt a better connection to the story and why things were rolling out as they were. It was much more plot- than character-driven, which is unusual in my experience with detective/serial killer stories. The characters here are tough to get a handle on; they're fairly enigmatically rigid, even for cops, without the quirks and personality explication that you usually get with this type of story. Ditto for the villain(s) frankly, and I think that's why I had a tough time falling into this one in the beginning.

Once I stopped looking for more and just settled in for the ride, both the story and my engagement with it fell into line and the read went much quicker. I enjoyed it in the end, despite having seen the Big Reveal coming from about 35% of the way in (I read this type of book A LOT), and think the author did a credit-worthy job tying up all the bits in a way that felt realistic yet still satisfying. It's an enjoyable read and a well-crafted plot.

This new series by Lisa Fantino had me hooked from the start! Detective Maggie Flynn's latest case is to catch a priest killer who is on the warpath to get as many victims as possible and not get caught. Told in two voices, this book is sure to please mystery and thriller fans!
