Just starting off I felt kind of weird because the beginning started a little slow for me, and I honestly found some of the content a little triggering but that wasn’t overwhelming. I definitely liked the book, I just felt like this book and me didn’t get along not necessarily because it’s badly written or the characters it just wasn’t what I was expecting.

Trigger warnings: Kidnapping, mentions of stalking, some violence

I do not often read nor review romance novels mainly because, at least for me, they tend to blur together after a while. There are only so many ways for characters to meet and interact and fall in love and the romance genre has been around for a very long time.

Now this is only my personal opinion because when the chance to read Stephanie Laurens’ newest romance came up on Netgalley, I jumped at the chance. Of the romance authors I have read, she is one I consistently come back to. Her characters are engaging and somehow she brings a breath of fresh air to a sometimes stale genre.

Like with most of Ms. Laurens’ series novels, we are first introduced to Lord Christopher ‘Kit’ Cavanaugh and Miss Sylvia Buckleberry (love that name!) in the first novel – The Designs of Lord Randolph Cavanaugh. It is something I have come to associate with her books as it gives the reader a sneak peek of who she will be writing about next. This holds true with this book as well because at the end we were introduced to Lady Eustacia Cavanaugh, sister to Randolph and Christopher and subject of the third novel of the series.

As with many of her other historical romance novels, Ms. Laurens has a way of staying somewhat true to the time period while bending the rules a bit. She doesn’t break the rules of propriety outright but she does give them a hearty bend at times. I personally find it adds to the enjoyment of the story though I know there are more rigid historical purists out there who would disagree.

The only part of the novel that I didn’t like and thought felt forced was Sylvia’s kidnapping and Kit’s subsequent rescue. Before this, she had mentioned the feeling of being watched only in passing and then suddenly a person with a beef against her father (who again was mentioned only briefly) shows up. I will not go too much further in to what happens next only to say that the whole sequence of events felt completely out of place in regards to the novel. It felt more like something out of a bad B-movie.

On the whole, I enjoyed The Pursuits of Lord Kit Cavanaugh. The overall story flowed quite well despite a few minor bumps. While it isn’t necessary to read the first book in the series, readers might want to just to get a better feel for the family dynamic that is common to Ms. Laurens’ books and to receive a proper introduction to the characters. This author has long been a personal favorite and I will continue to look forward to her new writings.

A fun easy romance continuing the Cavanaugh saga. (say that three times fast.) Kit Cavanaugh first met Sylvia Buckleberry (seriously, these names) at his brother's wedding, and while she intrigued him, he did not get a positive reaction from her, so promptly forgot her. Until she turned up in his doorstop.
Kit is pursuing his dream of building custom yachts and needs space. Bristol seems an ideal space with it's experienced ship builders, it's seemingly empty warehouses, and affordable cost. He strikes a deal with the company on what seems to be the perfect space, and just has to wait while a charity cleans out their space. Unfortunately, it seems like that charity isn't as thrilled as he is- it's a school for the poor and they were using the only space available to them- Kit's perfect warehouse. Sylvia Buckleberry, it turns out, is running the school and she is Not Pleased that some spoiled man has evicted her from the school. But neither one is exactly how they seemed at Ryder's wedding and both have similar goals in mind. They team up to find the school a new (better) home and then when the charity school draws someone's ire.

I enjoyed this story, it was light, but not silly, and had some fun elements to it. Stephanie Laurens is definitely one of my go-to authors.

Fans of Stephanie Laurens will love the latest in the Cavanaugh series about Kit Cavanaugh the youngest brother and son of Livinia.
Now that Ryder has become the Earl despite his step-mother's machinations, Kit is free to do as he wants. What he wants is to open a yacht design firm. Something his social climbing mother would not have allowed if she were still alive. In the previous book Kit went to find his future partner Waylon, when he was notified of his brother Rand's impending nuptials. Once back in England he met the bridesmaid Miss Sylvia Buckleberry, a dismissive vicar's daughter. Kit's first impression is interest which is cooled from Miss Buckleberry's demeanor.

Kit moves on to Bristol to open Cavanaugh Yachts. Unfortunately there is a charity using the warehouse he needs. Kit makes a deal to move the charity to new grounds not knowing it is a school for boys ran by Miss Buckleberry. This time Sylvia shows the fiery spirit missing in their last meeting. Kit is captivated and the pursuit is one.

Three different villainous plots try to derail their plans but the couple shall persevere.

The Pursuits of Lord Kit Cavanaugh is a delightful read that took me back to Lauren’s earliest, subtle Regencies, with the added fillip of strong, sensual protagonists that her readers have come to expect in recent years. Something else that I enjoyed – learning about the titular ‘pursuits’ of Kit Cavanaugh and his love, Miss Sylvia Buckleberry. Sylvia and Kit are acquainted; they were paired up, as bridesmaid and groomsman, at the wedding of Kit’s brother (Randolph) and Sylvia’s friend (Felicia) in The Designs of Lord Randolph Cavanaugh, the first of Laurens’ Cavanaugh series. The wedding isn’t a pleasant memory for either of them. Kit Cavanaugh – a gorgeous physical specimen – was Sylvia’s beau ideal during the less-than-memorable years she endured the London Season. How sad, for Sylvia, that Kit’s stellar looks were matched with a disreputable, rakish demeanor. Or so she thought. Given her unhappy memories of London, Sylvia was chilly and dismissive to Kit at her friend’s nuptials.

For reasons that are explored and explained in The Pursuits of Lord Kit Cavanaugh, Kit deliberately adopted the persona of a bon vivant during his years in London. Only recently has he felt emboldened to pursue his dream: “Kit is all business and has chosen the bustling port of Bristol to launch his passion—Cavanaugh Yachts.”

Of course, it’s inevitable, following the immutable laws of romance, that Sylvia will be awaiting in Bristol: “Miss Sylvia Buckleberry’s passion is her school for impoverished children.” Imagine her shock and dismay when she is told that she has a week to find a new location for her school and that she is being displaced by Lord Kit Cavanaugh! Sylvia is not prepared to meekly accept her fate: she storms the barricades.

She stepped into his inner sanctum and let fly. “I might have known!” Her tone dripped acid; her bosom swelled as she drew breath. “Of all the cities in England, you had to choose this one, and, of course, you think nothing of trampling over whomever and whatever stands in your way.” She locked her eyes on his as she halted on the other side of the desk, then dramatically flung her arms wide. “I can just imagine the reactions of the Dock Company directors. Yes, my lord. No, my lord. Three bags full, my lord.” Indigo sparks flared in the periwinkle-blue of her eyes. Her lush lips set in a thin line, she glared at him accusingly. “I’m quite sure that’s how it went.” She railed on, but while Kit’s brain registered her words, he wasn’t really listening.

Instead, he could only stare, grappling to make sense of the transformation of Sylvia Buckleberry that had manifested before him.

Kit is bouleversé; this new incarnation of Miss Buckleberry has “transfixed his senses and scattered his wits.” What’s a Laurens’ hero to do? First, gather the facts—to Kit’s chagrin, he learns that “the charity using the warehouse is a school.” Sylvia’s school, to be exact. Step two, fix the problem. Kit asks Sylvia to tell him everything about her establishment. He then offers to “fund the rent for not just another venue but a better venue for the school”, and although Kit is sincere in thinking that decision “will go a substantial way toward establishing the Cavanaugh name among the dockworkers and shipyard families,” the silver lining is obvious. Kit will get “to spend more time with this new, much improved, and utterly fascinating Miss Buckleberry.”

Two are stronger than one: Kit and Sylvia make a formidable pair, but they encounter enemies. Not everyone is in favor of educating the sons of dockworkers. Kit also has detractors, in particular, a man who feels threatened by Kit’s ambitious plans to design and build nimble, ocean-going wooden yachts. I was not surprised to discover that Kit and Sylvia were more than a match for their opponents. What I found unusual was the empathy they displayed to people who lashed out at them out of anger and fear. They lavished “the milk of human kindness” on those who sought to hurt them, defusing their anxieties and transforming them into allies.

It’s also lovely to watch Sylvia lower her guard and take a chance on the man who has always been the “embodiment of her fantasy gentleman.”

Here, now, they were interacting freely, adult to adult, with no screens, no masks. No façades.

Letting the silence stretch, she eyed him assessingly. She would dearly love to retreat to the chilly reserve she’d previously maintained with him—infinitely safer, without a shadow of a doubt—but the intent look in his caramel eyes and the faint suggestion of a smile about his lips gave warning that she would be unwise to attempt it …

So, what’s it going to be Sylvia? Readers will rejoice when Kit and Sylvia proceed side by side, initially as business partners but ultimately as the key in each other’s lock. It’s not just Kit who will devour his adventure with Sylvia with “equal parts satisfaction and anticipation.” This was a completely satisfying entry in Stephanie Laurens’ formidable array of historical romances.

I look forward to the next in the Cavanaugh saga.

Lord Christopher “Kit” Cavanaugh and Miss Sylvia Buckleberry have met previously, and it was only memorable due to its awkwardness and Sylvia’s noticeable coldness to Kit. While attending the wedding of Kit’s brother, Rand, Kit was attracted to Sylvia, but his every overture was met with the proverbial cold shoulder. Kit got the message, and decided to forego any further pursuit, thinking Sylvia to be closed up and unfriendly. As for Sylvia, she had an unwanted attraction to Kit which went back to her debut season. His reputation as a rake makes any acquaintance unsuitable for her, so she meets his friendly overtures with iciness. They each leave the wedding thinking to never see each other again.

Little does Sylvia know, but Kit’s rakish reputation is fictitious, something perpetuated by him to ward off young ladies trying to lure him into marriage, at the instigation of his scheming mother. The plots concocted by his mother were so twisted that her actions deeply affected the lives of Kit and his siblings. Now that his mother is deceased, and Kit has had a chance to regroup and assess his life, he’s ready to go forward with his dream of creating a company that builds yachts. He sets up in Bristol, which is ideally located, as well as having many experienced workmen in the area who desperately need the work. Bristol also happens to be the location where Sylvia has established a charitable school, one that currently is occupying the very building Kit has just purchased to house his new company.

When Sylvia learns that she will have to relocate her school within a week, she’s enraged, and stomps off to confront the new owner. Kit is astonished that the fiery woman berating him is the same icy and aloof woman he met weeks ago, and his previous attraction grows even hotter when he sees her passionate dedication to her cause. Sylvia’s anger pops like a balloon when Kit immediately offers to help find a new location for her school, and when she learns that he had no knowledge of her school, which had been using his building.

This tentative truce quickly evolves into a genuine friendship, as Kit helps enormously with relocating the school as well as backing it. Sylvia sees that Kit is bringing much needed employment and life to an area that desperately needs it. She begins to believe that his reputation is false, as his kindness and good works benefit her school and the community time and time again. When it becomes clear that Kit’s continued presence in her life is no coincidence, she decides to let go of her prejudice and allows him to court her.

Their courtship is slow and sweet, with Kit taking his time with Sylvia, and acting the complete gentleman. Their romance is believable and lovely. Sylvia’s distrust fades, along with any aloofness she may have harbored, and she exhibits the caring and fun loving woman she truly is. I loved watching her blossom, as well as seeing Kit realize that he is falling in love. They are people who are extraordinary in their giving natures, their commitment, and their genuine goodness. I adored them both and every scene with them together was a pleasure to read.

I haven’t yet read the previous story of Kit’s brother, Rand, (though I intend to) so I’m not sure if that book goes into much detail about Kit’s abusive mother, but she appears to have been a major piece of work. This story provided sufficient background so that it reads perfectly as a standalone. The building romance is intertwined with several clever mysteries, which made for exciting reading. This book is not as explicit or steamy as previous books I’ve read by Stephanie Laurens from years ago, though the story doesn’t suffer from the lack. (There is one intimate scene at the end of the book.) I found THE PURSUITS OF LORD KIT CAVANAUGH to be warm, romantic, engaging, and satisfying, and I recommend it for readers who enjoy a little mystery along with a delightful character driven romance.

The title "The Pursuits of Lord Kit Cavanaugh" is so appropriate. He pursued his love of sea faring yacht making. He built his team and moved forward with his new endeavor. At the same time his new business pursuit displaced a school for underprivileged youths in the area. The school was led by an acquaintance Miss Sylvia Buckleberry. His first met her at his brother's wedding a few months past. Now she was before in him with rage about her school being displaced. He became fascinated with her. They worked together to solve their problems amicably. However, prejudice, anger, revenge and danger were following both of them. Neither one could figure out why. I loved the way the author wrote about the children/kids in her school. Very realistic, loyal, kind, funny and adventurous. When danger came to the school and to Sylvia personally, it was three of the boys who enabled Kit to find her and rescue her. He also had to deal with the fact that someone was trying to sabotage his business. So as the title suggests, Kit pursued his business but fate also had him pursuing romance with Sylvia. A lovely read and worth the time.

Lord Kit Cavanaugh is ready to put his past behind him and start building a life for himself of his own designs rather than the designs of his manipulative, now-deceased mother. He heads to Bristol, England where he intends to open a yacht-building company. Almost immediately he bumps into Sylvia Buckleberry and is thrilled to find that she has a fiery side that she had been keeping hidden from him in their past run-ins.

While this book doesn't break any new ground, for fans of Regency romance and Stephanie Laurens this book delivers a reliable dose of what they love. While it can be read as a stand-alone, which is what I did, I think it might be better enjoyed if read in order as part of the series.

I loved the characters in this book. I enjoyed learning about Kit's ocean going yachts & Sylvia's school with the great kids sprinkled throughout the story. I am looking forward to more books in the series.

His mother was a demon to her four children and their step brother. She wanted to control and exploit her children for her own gain. Rand, the oldest had felt the most impact of his mother's manipulation. But he managed to fall in love with a wonderful woman. Ryder, the Marquess, is the step brother and also inherits the title. He never wanted to get married after what had happened. But he too, found a wonderful girl he could love.. Then we come to Kit, (Lord Christopher Cavanaugh), he wants to make Yachts. He also has to find the appropriately, trained men, who know how to work on the wooden ships and not the iron ones.
Sylvia loved helping people, Silvia Buckleberry was an only child of the vicar's.. She was intelligent, and savy herself. She started to watch what he did and said and he seemed an honorable man. But his reputation was still horrible.
The story was wonderful. It was well written, moved smoothly and kept your interest. Kit just wanted to love her and get his business going. He was an admirable man as was his partner. There were some surprises along the way. I found it to be a very engaging tale. I am so glad that I was able to read it .

The town of Bristol looks like it's going to be a great place for Lord Christopher "Kit" Cavanaugh to open up his new yacht building business. He's even found a warehouse. It's just too bad about the nonprofit he's displacing. But then he finds out it's a school for impoverished children. And one being run by Sylvia Buckleberry. He decides that he's going to make sure that the school is going to succeed. It has a much to do with wanting to help his new community as much as helping out the lovely Sylvia. But doing that means that he's spending more time with her and figuring out exactly how lovely she is.
For Sylvia's part, she's somewhat bemused by Kit's help but more than willing to take it. She thought he was nothing more than a fancy lord working his way through the debutantes of London. But she's learning that there are depths to this man. Ones that she'll need to rely on as there are people who aren't very excited about her school moving to a nicer part of town. And enemies from the past that are against Cavanaugh Yachts succeeding.
This was a fine story from Lauren's but there were so many things happening in quick succession that it was annoying. One minor plot point really could have been erased and made the story so much better. I'm not sure why it was thrown in.

THE PURSUITS OF LORD KIT CAVANAUGH is the second book in the Cavanaughs series by Stephanie Laurens. Lord Christopher "Kit" Cavanaugh and Miss Sylvia Buckleberry met at a wedding, had an instant physical attraction, but had a chilly first encounter. Since then, both have gotten a sense of purpose in their lives when they meet again. Kit is building a yacht business and Sylvia is the driving force behind a badly needed school for disadvantaged children. Having found their passions in life leads to them rediscovering and growing a passion for each other.

At that earlier meeting, Sylvia's reaction to Kit is largely due to his reputation as something of a rake and her uncomfortable physical attraction. Likewise, Kit's initial unfavorable reaction to Sylvia was due to the cold reception he got from her and his uncomfortable physical attraction to her. When these two meet up again, they soon find that their initial perceptions about each other were, thankfully, very wrong. As they work together to make Sylvia's school a success and, in turn, help the local community, Kit finds Sylvia to be a woman with a hidden passionate nature, and Sylvia finds Kit to be a compassionate and kind man she can admire. As is often the case in a Stephanie Laurens novel, there is mystery and an element of danger in THE PURSUITS OF LORD KIT CAVANAUGH, but Laurens expertly balances those elements with the burgeoning love story. There are red herrings that Kit and Sylvia must sort through before finding the villain behind everything. I love that this hero and heroine work together, and the respect rather than condescension that Sylvia gets. Mutual respect and physical attraction eventually lead to deeper feelings.

THE PURSUITS OF LORD KIT CAVANAUGH is Pride and Prejudice, Stephanie Laurens-style. The secondary characters in this story are interesting and entertaining. The development of the relationship between the hero and heroine seems very natural and fitting for who the characters are. I look forward to the next historical romance by Stephanie Laurens

Bristol, England 1843 Lord Kit Cavanaugh has finally determined his niche and purpose. Moving to Bristol, he and his partner Wayland are starting a new venture, Cavaugh Yachts. They find a warehouse to rent and want to get started right away but find that a charity who was occupying the space needs a few days to relocate.
Sylia Buckeberry (yes love that name!) finds out that the school she runs will have to find a new place to operate, but the problem is they have no funds to pay the rent! Confronting Kit, she rants about there is no place to go and the children need the school. What is amazing is that Sylia and Kit met at his brother's wedding not too long ago, but this seemed a passionate woman compared to the seemingly icy one he had met! Intrigued he assures her he will help find a place. He is very drawn to her and she to him.
But there are outside forces that come into play that threaten Syvia's school, he comes to her aid but at the same time someone messes up the ship workshop. What is going on?
Stephanie Laurens is one of my all time favorite authors. Her books have brought me hours of entertainment and swoonworthy heros and fiesty heroines. This story is no exception and I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially with the mysterious spin of who is trying to hurt Sylvia. I highly recommend any story by this author and cannot wait for more on the Cavannaughs!

Delightful read that builds!

Lord Christopher “Kit” Cavanaugh has a dream. To establish an exclusive top of the range yacht building business in Bristol.
Miss Sylvia Buckleberry has a dream. To establish a school for the poorer children of Bristol, particularly those whose parents are employed (or unemployed) on and around the wharves of Bristol.
That these two dreams clashed goes without saying! But the redoubtable Kit managed to bring about a satisfactory solution for both dreams. His hiring tactics are masterful. Unfortunately others are not so easily persuaded.
I must say though it was the young boys of the school who stole my heart. Their protectiveness towards Sylvia is brilliantly portrayed. Kit's easy interaction with them is delightful.
All in all, true love, a couple of mysterious incidents, a chase and a loving resolution made this a pleasing read.

Kit is a man marked by the past, after being shown by his mother as a trophy for most of his life, he decided that he did not want to live in the London or live with the high society, because of this he decides to join his best friend and builds yachts in Bristol. When he arrives, he is already faced with Syliva, a girl who snubbed him at his brother's wedding .

Sylvia was charmed by Kit from the first moment she saw him but his fame made her want to saty away from him for fear of falling in love and end up suffering. But when fate puts them in front of each other again, it will be difficult to hide this passion.

Little by little, they are approaching and realizing that the impression and the image they had of each other was totally wrong and that both combine a lot.

Mixing up a good suspense with romance and a good touch of comedy, Stephanie Laurens has created an engaging plot that has conquered me since the first pages. With every created situation I felt even more attached to the book and when the end came, I was sighing wanting more.

I loved it too much as the writer changed that image of characters strongly moved by physical passion and created a story with more moments of conquest, waiting and anticipation.

Terrific book. Now that his brother's wedding was over, Kit was ready to head for Bristol and get his dream of Cavanaugh Yachts launched. All he needed was the right location and the craftsmen with the right skills, and he would be set. The site was quickly found; all he needed to do was wait for the charity using it to vacate the premises.

Daughter of a vicar, Sylvia found her calling in providing education for the sons of Bristol dockworkers. She and her team worked hard for the last two years and had just started seeing real progress in their efforts when she found out that they were losing their building.

I loved both Kit and Sylvia, both of whom made brief appearances in the previous book, The Designs of Lord Randolph Cavanaugh. Kit had quite the reputation around London as a rake. What no one knew was that it was a carefully cultivated reputation, designed to discourage his manipulative mother's matchmaking aspirations. Having been a witness to his parents' marriage, Kit had no desire to marry. In reality, Kit was an honorable, kind, and hardworking man. Sylvia gave up on the idea of marriage for herself long ago, after she endured one season of the glitz and glamour. She is intelligent, determined, and kind. Both of them have dreams that they are passionate about.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Kit and Sylvia. Their first encounter was at Rand's wedding, where they were partnered during the wedding celebration. Kit was intrigued by Sylvia, but she treated him coldly, so he tried to put her out of his mind. Sylvia struggled to maintain her distance from the rake she was inexplicably drawn to and had crushed on two years earlier. She never expected to see him again and was dismayed to find he had leased the building that housed her school. I loved their next meeting, as Sylvia burst into Kit's office and harangued him about dislocating her school. Kit was stunned by the difference in Sylvia and intrigued all over again. I loved how he took the wind out of her sails by merely agreeing to help her find a new spot for her school. As they spent time together looking for a new location, both Kit and Sylvia discovered that their previous beliefs about each other were all wrong. I enjoyed seeing them get to know and respect who the other is, and the realization of how much alike they are. I liked Kit's move into courting Sylvia, though it took a bit for her to realize what he was doing. As the trouble that stalked them heated up, I loved Kit's protectiveness of Sylvia, which added to his growing feelings for her. Sylvia was also protective of Kit, and I enjoyed how she did things that would help him. But it took the danger at the end for them to realize just how deep their feelings for each other were.

The suspense in the story was good. There were attacks on the business, attacks on the school, and Sylvia's persistent feelings of being watched. Were these incidents related, or were they separate issues? There were multiple twists and turns as each event was dealt with, revealing some interesting motivations and solutions. The final confrontation had me on the edge of my seat until it was all over.

The secondary characters gave added depth to the story, helping both Kit and Sylvia shine. The boys that Sylvia teaches, and their families, showed another side of Victorian England. The advances in the technology of boat building changed the economy of Bristol, and this book showed the effects on the ordinary people. The struggles to take care of their families was vividly portrayed. I liked Sylvia's compassion and practical ways of helping and dealing with problems. Her connection with her students and their families also played a big part in helping Kit get his business started. I loved Kit's practical methods of running his business, and his hands-on approach. It was especially fun to see the variety of reactions. I loved the assorted boys and their parts in the book. Each one has a unique personality and history. There were some pretty funny situations that they got involved in, but they also played a huge part in the final confrontation. I liked the appearances of the previous couples in the series and their roles in moving the relationship along.

A delightful historical romance.

He has to change his game. Can he play his cards rights? And if he does, will she even want him? Will he take the risk?
While all this plays out, both Kit and Sylvia are in the midst of enhancing their careers. He is starting a new yacht building company, and she is furthering the operation of a school. But, it seems others aren’t too keen on their enterprises and set out to thwart their every move. From fires and kidnapping these two are put to the test. Will love overcome?
The writing is strong and the characters are wonderful. The supporting cast brings additional enjoyment. This story is about the building of friendship and learning to trust with sprinklings of romance and lots of suspense. A very entertaining read!

Stephanie Laurens writes classic love stories. Kit is the ultimate gentleman while wooing Sylvia. She is a true lady who is genteel and worthy. The story is filled with goodness and light. It is uplifting and heartwarming. It has some fun moments with a great cast of characters.

Who is the real Miss Sylvia Buckleberry, the woman who gave the cold shoulder to Lord Kit Cavanaugh at his brother's wedding or the woman who storms into his office and passionately defends her school for impoverished children? This was such a wonderful story to read and I enjoyed it from start to end.

Kit is such a swoon worthy hero and Sylvia is a very passionate and determined heroine. She soon finds out he's nothing like she thought he would be and in fact, he does everything he can to help her out. There are a few twists and turns in the story as well and just when you think you know who has been following Sylvia and sabotaging both her school and Kit's Yacht construction company, it's not as it seems to be!!

I was given a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
