George Meade as the central character of a Civil War novel was surprising to me. I had high hopes that this would make him interesting while shedding new light on Civil War battles. The battle scenes were well described but giving new life to Meade was seemingly impossible. He is portrayed as dry and unemotional. Good Civil War novel in general, but as a General Meade vehicle it is sorely lacking. Most authors of historical novels tend to ignore descriptive maps. Those included here were well excecuted, accurate, and not busy.

I don't much has been written specifically about GM. I thought he was an interesting prickly personality who had to persevere in a variety of ways in a very challenging time in US history. I think this is the author's first book/novel, however, I thought it was well executed, and includes maps, short biographies, and sources. The letters of some of the characters was a nice touch. It's obvious the author put a lot of effort into being accurate in his betrayals and the historical events.

The book does a feel a little academic, and some enjoyment was subtracted by some of the digtial formatting which is a little funky in the advanced copy of the Kindle version (it's also has a quite large file size), including maps that may be difficult to read due to digital size constraints.

I really appreciate the free copy for review!
