this book was not my cup of tea. i was really intrigued by the synopsis of this book and i thought i was really going to enjoy this, but i sadly didn't. it was described to me as Alice post wonderland. she told her stories about wonderland and that got her into an insane asylum... she gets out and gets back to Wonderland, except this time it's to the queen of hearts court. and this time, she has to kill her.
i just didn't like how Alice was portrayed in the book. alice's adventures in Wonderland is one of my all-time favorite books of all time, so i wasnt expecting this to be at that level, but i was expecting this to be at least good. nevertheless, i think you should give this a try. it just might work for you.

I was pretty excited to read this book as I am a big fan of Alice in Wonderland and I always love seeing the different ways that people interrupt and re-imagine this classic.

This re-imagining, or rather continuation, takes place years after the original story. The story starts with 15 year old Alice living in a asylum, her family have given up on her “growing out of” telling stories about her adventure’s in Wonderland and so have sent her away to an asylum after being promised that Alice could be “cured”. Of course, there wouldn’t be much of a story if she was.

In a final attempt to cure Alice she travels to Switzerland, to Prefargier Asylum, where Dr Burckhardt is offering an experimental procedure that promises to remove all thoughts of Wonderland from Alice’s head. Moments before the procedure is about to begin, Alice escapes from the asylum to Wonderland with the White Rabbit’s help. The only catch is that he wants her to kill the Queen.

I really enjoyed this retelling. I especially liked the nonsensical phrases throughout the book. They really reminded me of the source material. Which I loved.

Also the way that it was written in third person dual point of view was really interesting. As it offered both Alice’s view of events alongside the Queen’s. Giving two different takes on the story and offering two unique sides to Ever Alice‘s plot.

Many of the characters from the source material appear in Ever Alice accompanied by a new cast of characters. Wonderland has changed since Alice was last there, the Queen having gotten worse. Beheading anyone she believes to be a traitor, or does something to her disliking. I felt like the Queen, Rosamund, was one of the stronger characters in this story. She had a very strong characterisation, more so than many of the other characters. What I mean by this is that I felt that Rosamund’s character was the most consistent in her thoughts and actions. As she believed wholeheartedly that her actions where completely justifiably. Only very briefly did her belief waver, and often only for a short amount of time before she convinced herself of her own “brilliance”. Which is seen in her chapters in the book.

Alice’s character, however, was more unsure. She is dragged into the mess that is Wonderland and asked to kill the Queen. Something which she does not want to do, she does not want to become a murderer even if the Queen wants her beheaded. Alice is thrown into the thick of it when she is initiated into an organisation to kill the Queen and then put into place as a lady-in-waiting thanks to Ralph, the White Rabbit, one of the Queen’s three advisers.

Alice is the character that changes the most. Starting as a quiet-ish girl unsure of herself after her time in the asylum that grows into a more confident and self realised individual. Her decisions and mindset changes a number of times throughout the story. From not wanting to travel back to Wonderland and wanting to be cured, to changing her mind to go with the White Rabbit at the last moment. From not wanting to kill the Queen to wanting to kill the Queen.

Unlike Alice in Wonderland, Ever Alice feels less dreamlike and more like reality. There is a clear and concise development of plot and events, new and wonderful things do not just appear and dazzle or awe Alice like in her original time in Wonderland. Possibly due to the fact that she is older and spends more time in Wonderland, many of the peculiarities of Wonderland become seemingly normal.

As I mentioned before I liked the throwbacks to Alice in Wonderland; I liked that such things as the “drink me” potion to make one small, the Queen’s love of beheading people, the Mad Hatter’s tea party, the croquet game to name a few. But what I really liked was that Ramsay took a lot of these elements and expanded on them. As well as create new oddities, such as pats of butter in “tea” that isn’t real tea and a game of skittles with penguins and armadillos.

There were a few things that I didn’t like about this book. I wasn’t 100% happy with the ending, but I did appreciate the mirroring the ending in Alice in Wonderland in Ever Alice. As well as showing what happened after Alice’s return to Wonderland in Switzerland and what had happened to her family. I personally am not a huge fans of these sort of endings in general. But I understand why this part of the ending made sense to include.

Overall, I did really enjoy this book. I thought was a really great and fun re-imagining of Wonderland and a very interesting continuation of Alice in Wonderland.

I rarely read retellings but Ever Alice felt like a sequel to Alice. Ever Alice is about what happened to Alice after she left the Wonderland. It was surprisingly a fun read for me.

The plot is good. The writing style is good which gave me a pleasant feeling to keep on reading. At the half way through the book, I was still unsure about how the book is going to end and that made want to keep on reading.

So many characters that I'm familiar were in the book. And some of the characters annoyed the shit out of me but I stayed until the end because the plot is good. The best part is when Alice met Rosamund, The Queen of Hearts. Alice was given an order to kill The Queen of Hearts so that she could go home. She was hesitating at first, but did she do it? I really liked to read from their point of views.

I liked the ending of the book. This retelling is much more than I expected. It was a total win, fun and creative.

Thanks NetGalley for sending me this eARC copy in return for an honest review.

As my name is Alice, I often get lumped in with the Disney Alice in Wonderland stuff. However this was a breath of fresh air! It ‘finished off’ the story a bit, only Alice is in an insane asylum because really who follows white rabbits down a hole and meets the Mad Hatter?! I really enjoyed this and would thoroughly recommend it!

I was really excited to read this book. The idea was creative and mostly carried out very well. I unfortunately wasn't too connected to the characters or the writing style, but I still feel that it's an enjoyable story. I just wish it had been a little more developed.

A curious, mad, delightful, twisted tale of girl named Alice. I love a crazy story about the mad children's story Alice in Wonderland, the darker the better. This definitely fits the bill. With notes of intrigue, murder, beheadings, madness, and smelly tea, there is plenty to love about this story that picks up with Alice in an insane asylum at the age of 15 due to her "Wonderland nonsense". Wonderland is not done with her yet, as the Queen of Hearts is mad and beheading everyone and they need Alice to kill her. But is Alice strong enough to do it or is she just as mad as the rest of them. This story as old and new friends, as well as enemies that will keep you on your mad little toes.

Sorry for the late review. We've been moving and reading has been second fiddle.

I loved this book. It's the most interesting retelling of Alice I've read in a long time.

I will do a more thorough review later, but for now everyone should read this book!!! Read it, that's an order.

Thank you NetGalley for the chance to review this book

Alice in Wonderland is one of the stories that got me into fantasy and reading. When I read the synopsis for this I thought it would be right up my alley but alas I am reminded why I am picky about my retellings. Ever Alice felt like it wasn't fully there yet. I thought that it needed a few more things to smooth out the writing and bring the characters to be more realistic while also being similar to their original incarnation created by Lewis Carrol himself. While this book may not have been for me, it may be for others.

Very whimsical tale. Good story line with many twists and turns, I enjoyed this book even though sometimes retelling like this are not my cup of tea. The whimsy and odd word play often gets to feeling over done by the end of the book. (This only happened the last 3/4 of this book for me though)
Alice returns to wonderland after escaping an asylum and is thrown right into the middle of a rabbit hole of plot twists and conspiracies. Saving her own head will be a feat.

This was a solid 4 star read. I did find the book was a bit slow paced to begin with, and I found myself really struggling to get into the story. I ended up really enjoying it though, and thought it was an excellent take on the Wonderland world. It was quirky, it was fun, and once you can get past the beginning, it goes pretty fast.

4.5 stars.

Murder, mystery, madness. It really has it all.

I have always been a fan of Alice in Wonderland. The madness, the nonsense, finding sanctuary deep within one's mind. And I am so glad to say that Ever Alice doesn't disappoint.

I must admit, I saw the ending coming. But it didn't take away from the nonsensical journey that H. J. Ramsey takes us on. This story helped me connect to Alice more so than I think I have in years. The back and forth between 'reality' and Wonderland helps add authenticity.

I really enjoyed that the characters that you think you know and love, are all a little changed in this retelling. I was very glad that it wasn't more of the same. It isn't the Wonderland that you grew up knowing, but it certainly is the Wonderland you can imagine it being.

A tale for all those of us who are a little mad, and are looking for somewhere to belong.

If you are into a twist in classic story, this book is just for you. It is written by H.J Ramsay with a touch of dark fantasy. We will follow the story of Alice and how she was treated in mental facility and what is inside Alice's quite scary mind.
The author describe in detail on the character and settings, but somehow the plot is too slow for me, I have to put down this book several times and been thinking to mark it as DNF, but I keep on reading until the end. This is not a children book due to its dark theme, while for the adult we could appreciate the sarcasm and quite cynical humor on this book.

I receive the arc from netgalley in exchange of honest review.

Ahh I loved this book! Full disclaimer I have never read Alice in Wonderland, and I'm only kind of aware of the story line but I loved this sequel!

It picks up a few years after Alice In Wonderland, and Alice is now kept in an asylum because she won't stop talking about the white rabbit. Her parents agree to let her undergo radical treatment in Europe, but just before this happens the white rabbit reappears!

This story is told from Alice's perspective and also that of the Queen of Hearts Rosamund. Rosamund is a hilarious character who you hate because she's wicked, but you also kind of love because she's just so mad. In fact the whole suite of characters is completely mad! There's the old favourites like the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat, but also new characters.

Alice is fabulous - tough but also unsure. I really liked her characterisation. The author paints such a wonderful picture of a zany wonderland world. I didn't want the story to end!!

Ever Alice felt like a lovely sequel to the original Alice stories that I grew up reading. I thought the pacing was good for the most part. There were moments where I wanted it to pick up but not enough to make me not enjoy what I was reading. I really enjoyed all of the familiar characters from the original stories especially the Queen Of Hearts. The work really shined in the various character moments that we get throughout the book.

Overall, this was a nice trip back to a familiar place. I love stories that take what we know and twist it around. It’s easy to live in the worlds we already know and Ever Alice was such a fun example of that.

I love anything dealing with Alice in Wonderland and this was no exception!!! Some parts did come off as a little too "YA" for me but I would definitely recommend this very imaginative book.

If you like Alice in Wonderland and YA, this could be for you. It takes place after her returning from Wonderland the first time. In a way it is like a continuation of what happened and her returning to Wonderland. It does deal with mental health - people believing she is not well and you can see her progression in Wonderland with what is happening in her life.

H.J Ramsay takes us back to Alice in Wonderland with this creative retelling of the tale. This was my first experience reading a Alice in Wonderland retelling. This book took a dark spin on the story as Alice, now 15, finds herself admitted to an asylum. Her parents think she has gone mad with her belief in Wonderland. Right before the doctors take a drastic measure and have her brain operated on, the White Rabbit rescues Alice and brings her back to Wonderland. Alice is being asked to kill the Queen!

The story is told in alternating perspectives of both the Queen and Alice.

Overall, I enjoyed this book but that ending has me feeling a bit off.

Ever Alice attempts to explain what happened to Alice after she left Wonderland. It's something most fans of the classic story have likely wondered. I'm not a huge fan of the original, but I decided to try this one anyway. I struggled through the slow beginning and got bored with it several times throughout the story. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this story any more than the original. Big fans of Alice in wonderland will enjoy this one. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ramsay’s take on Alice’s adventures in Wonderland. The concept that Alice’s stories would be viewed as delusions worthy of commitment made an intriguing touchstone back to the ‘real world.’ We watch things get darker, darker fearing the inevitable end of Alice as Alice, until she is saved at the eleventh hour by an old friend.

Ramsay builds on the fantastical Wonderland world and I stopped a few times just to savor the clever wordplay.

The ending took me by surprise, if one could continue to be surprised by anything in nonsensical land of wonder.

This story is a re-imagined telling of Carrol's, Alice in Wonderland. The story picks up 15 years later, as a sort of sequel to the classics. Alice awakens in an insane asylum and the only way out is to return to Wonderland. She plots with the white rabbit to kill the Queen of Hearts whereby she will be able to return to her real life. But what happens when you fall in love in Wonderland?

Ever Alice is a unique twist to the typical Alice in Wonderland tale. The writing is good as H.J Ramsay keeps the voice true to to the whimsical, fantastical original Wonderland. However, there are a few parts that are not as enjoyable, like some of the allusions which I felt were forced and confusing at times. Any teen, young adult or any Alice fanatic would enjoy this book - overall it was good but not something I would pick up again.
