Another flawless procedural in the Cormac Reilly series from Dervla McTiernan.

Even aside from the setting, McTiernan’s work feels a lot like Tana French’s (a high compliment in my book), and while it’s a touch less psychologically complex, it’s also mercifully less emotionally oppressive and (at least so far) populated by more satisfying conclusions.

I actually liked this book even better than The Ruin. Both are unquestionably 5-Star books, so I chalk it up to a matter of preference with regard to subject matter.

Regardless, this is shaping up to be a fantastic series, and I eagerly await the next installment.

Hot on the heels of her debut novel, The Ruin, comes the second book in the Cormack Reilly series by Dervla McTiernan.

Having transferred in from Dublin to be with his partner Emma, Cormack Reilly finds himself still knee deep in cold-case files after joining the Garda team the year before. But newly promoted Sargent, Carrie O’Halloran, up to her eyeballs in fresh cases begs their super for Cormack's help. No sooner has he been given three of Carrie's cases does Cormack receive a panicky call from his girlfriend, Emma: she's found the body of a hit and run victim. But is it an accident or murder?

Fans of Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad, will be sure to enjoy this addition to the Irish murder mysteries, this one set in Galway.

An excellent mystery and worthy successor to McTiernan’s first Cormac Reilly novel, The Ruin. In this novel, Reilly is called to the scene of a hit and run by his girlfriend, who discovered the body near her workplace. Reilly begins what becomes a high pressure investigation, and the twists and turns abound.

Not compelling enough to keep the reader moving past the first few pages--slow and difficult to get into. Title sold me on this one, but it was disappointing.

"Oh what tangled webs we weave, when first we practice to deceive."

This saying is so appropriate for this second entry in the wonderful Cormac Reilly series. A follow up to "The Ruin" you need to put this book on your to-read list if you love conundrums that have you turning in circles. I love the setting, I love the characters and I love the plot lines which will keep you awake nights reading.

Highly recommended!

Detective Cormac Reilly is back in this follow-up to The Ruin. He finds himself investigating the hit and run death of a young woman after his girlfriend comes across the body outside Galway University. The dead woman’s i.d. confirms she is Carline Darcy, granddaughter of one of the most powerful men in Ireland and head of Darcy Pharmaceuticals. In his investigation, Cormac becomes aware of just how powerful the Darcy family is, and how many powerful friends they have. He becomes obsessed in uncovering the details of Carline’s death and what led to what the seasoned detective believes was actually a murder, not an accident. McTiernan brings home the vast differences between the mega wealthy and the rest of us, as well as the shocking and obscene power they wield. This is a true nail biter
