A definite BUY BUY BUY book...
One of things I love is when a book has many dimensions and characters that are full of life. You will definitely enjoy this fictional , suspenseful romance if you like such things. Each page was a delight and I found myself hurrying so I could find out what happens next in the story. A talented author that weaves a wonderful tale for her readers that is entertaining as well as humorous and life touching in some aspects. It is a unique story line in many ways. It deviated from the cookie cutter romances that all seem the same at times. So, buy the book and sit and enjoy another world. I was given this ARC via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own and completely voluntary. Regards.................

A Rogue by Night is the third book in the Devils of Dover series by Kelly Bowen. It is currently scheduled for release on May 28 2019. You do not need to have read the previous books to fully enjoy this one, but returning readers will enjoy seeing favorite characters make their appearances.

Baron. Physician. Smuggler. Harland Hayward is living a double life as an aristocrat by day and a criminal by night. As a doctor, Harland has the perfect cover to appear in odd places at all hours, a cover he uses to his advantage. He's chosen this life to save his family from financial ruin, but he draws the line at taking advantage of the honest and trustworthy Katherine Wright. Katherine thought she was done smuggling. Having finally convinced her ailing father and injured brother to abandon their criminal pursuits, she's returned to England to help them escape to a new life--once she helps them fulfill their last contract. And that means working with Hayward, even when her instincts tell her that becoming his ally may be a risk to her heart - as well as her life.

A Rogue by Night is a engaging historical romance, and I love how strong and independent all the women in this series are, and Katherine is no exception. She is an accomplished surgeon, with battlefield experience and an unusual set of skills and contacts that come in very handy. Harland respects women, and is well versed in how intelligent and unexpected they may be. I enjoyed watching these two find their way through danger and their less than stellar histories to find a way forward. I found both characters and their story to be compelling and entertaining. There were moments were my mind wandered, but I think that is more on me and the hectic nature of my week rather than an issue with the story.

A Rogue by Night is a good historical romance, and a nice addition to the series. I think it is a must read for fans, and a good weekend read for anyone else that enjoys strong women and their men.

A Rogue by Night is the third book in Kelly Bowen’s Devils of Dover series of Regency-era historical romance novels. I was excited about the opportunity to read this book via Netgalley because I enjoyed reading the previous two books in the series. Harland (the hero) played a minor role in those earlier books, and I was looking forward to reading his story.

Katherine Wright meets Harland Hayward when he arrives at her house when she is trying to patch up her smuggler brother after he is shot by soldiers. At first, she’s annoyed; he might be a doctor, but she is a skilled surgeon and what she’s doing. When soldiers arrive shortly thereafter looking for Katherine’s brother, Harland helps convince them that nothing is amiss.

Even though he just saved her family, Katherine still doesn’t know if she can trust Hayward. After all, he is a baron, and her experience with members of the aristocracy has led her to believe that they are arrogant and callous.

Harland needs Katherine’s help. She’s competent and trustworthy, but he’s reluctant to share a part of his life that he hoped to keep secret from everyone he cares about. Speaking of that- he’s smitten with Katherine from the moment he meets her, but he’s been hurt in the past, and hasn’t wanted to take that risk again- until now.

This was such a good book. I loved the way Katherine and Harland’s rapport built slowly. Their reluctance was understandable, given their romantic pasts. The tone of the book is fairly light, and the banter is hilarious- it was so much fun seeing the evolution of their relationship. The scenes with the soldiers provide genuine tension, and the villain of the piece could give Inspector Javert a run for his money.

I would recommend A Rogue By Night. I think this book functions well enough as a standalone; the other Devils of Dover books are excellent, but readers don’t necessarily have to read them before reading this one. Familiar characters from the series have cameo roles, but don’t play a significant part of this narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed my reading experience; Bowen has become one of my favorite historical romance writers, and I’m looking forward to reading more from her in the future!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

The third book in Kelly Bowen's Devils of Dover series pairs two doctors who both happen to be smugglers as well. Katherine is the daughter of a smuggler and was brought up in the family business. She studied under a midwife and then went to war, and has since been patching up the locals. Harland is a Baron and also a doctor, something his late wife hated him for. Since they both have a disastrous past relationship and are trying to keep secrets (very poorly), their relationship progresses in fits and starts.

Unlike the other books I've read by this author, A Rogue by Night is full of action. It reads a bit like a Joanna Bourne novel, honestly. There are lots of soldiers shooting at people, a prison break, and a whole bunch of doctoring. Since the main characters are both doctors, this makes a lot of sense, but I do think the non-stop action interfered a bit with the development of their relationship. Harland is immediately smitten, while Katherine aims a rifle at him during their meet-cute.

It takes a bit, but once they both open their hearts, the romance is charming. Their connection is built not just on physical attraction, but also on mutual respect and an appreciation of each other's professional competence, so I thought Bowen managed the class and power imbalance well. Overall not my favorite of Bowen's books but still a solid and engaging story.

Content Warnings: everyone gets shot, amputation, discussion of war and horrible prison conditions

Side note: I got a finished copy and I'm not sure if it's because I was reading on paper instead of on my Kindle, but there were a few noticeable copyediting errors.

Suzanne received a copy of this book from the publisher for review.

Danger, smugglers, intrigue, passion, secrets....this story has it all and Kelly Bowen has completely blew me away, this was such an amazing book! The main characters, Harland and Katherine, are such fascinating and complex people and you can't help but want them to find their HEA together.

Both surgeons, as well as smugglers, they work so well together but Kate has so many trust issues and Harland has many secrets, which make it hard for them to understand each other. Their passion can't be denied, though, and I love how the heated scenes are so well written. Their adventure had me completely hooked from start to end and now I can't wait to read another Kelly Bowen book!!!

I must not forget to mention Harland's aunts, two sisters, who are an absolute hoot! They really did have me laughing out loud at their antics!!!

I was given a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I received a copy of this title from the publisher for an honest review. This book was a 3.75 star read for me so I've rounded up to 4 stars. The third title in the Devils of Dover trilogy, it can easily be read as a standalone. The story focus's on Harland, Baron Strathmore. Many years ago, he made a deal with an underworld figure to keep his family's shipping business afloat that included him leading the local smugglers along the coast near his family seat. A doctor by vocation, Harland keeps his identity secret from the local smuggling gangs. When the book begins, Harland has just arrived at the home of Katherine Wright, the daughter and sister of local smugglers to assist with her brother's gunshot wound. Katherine has been away from home for several years and immediately suspicious of Harland's appearance without being summoned. He proves invaluable when soldiers arrive looking for her brother and to burn the family home.

Katherine thought she was out of the smuggling life when she left England years ago for the Continent and spent time caring for wounded soldiers. Although not able to formally train as a surgeon, her time spent with the army provided her with an opportunity to develop her skills; she is surprised when Harland doesn't just dismiss her but instead is impressed with her knowledge and even views her as his equal. Katherine quickly finds herself sucked back into the smuggling world to help her brother.

I liked both Katherine and Harland as characters and did appreciate their chemistry, I thought this book worked better as an adventure and less as a romance, in large part to the focus given to the adventure side of the story. I appreciated that Harland didn't immediately dismiss Katherine as just a female, but really respected her skills as a surgeon. Overall, I enjoyed this book and will definitely continue reading books by Kelly Bowen.

What a book! I have found a new romance writer to add to my pre-release purchase list.

Harland Hayward, Baron of Strathmore, is more than a peer of the real.m. He is a skilled surgeon and he also has ties to the post-war smuggling underworld. He meets Katherine Wright, a gifted healer in her own right as well as part of a smuggler family. They come together after Katherine’s brother Matthew becomes injured while attempting to smuggle brandy off the coast of Dover, England.

There was instant chemistry between Harland and Katherine. Katherine is a very strong and strong-willed woman who only wants to be respected for her medical skills and take her family away from the smuggling life. Harland is astonished to find a woman with Katherine’s intelligence and abilities. They bond over their shared love of healing. Harland is the perfect mixture of the good guy with some bad boy mixed in.

This is a beautiful love story full of action and adventure from beginning to end. Kelly Bowen is an exceptionally talented storyteller. This is the first book I have read in the series and it can be read as a stand-alone. I plan to read the others in the series and there are several interesting characters in this story that I hope have their own story as well.

This is four stars for me. I wish there had been more romance between the hero and heroine but overall a great read. Highly recommend.

If you’ve read the first two books in this series you will definitely remember Sir Harland Hayward. Brother to Clara and Rose, who is both a Baron and a doctor… and apparently a smuggler as well.

His heroine is Katherine Wright. Daughter to a local smuggling family and a damn fine surgeon. Harland and Katherine kind of crash into each other one night when she is patching up her brother and Harland shows up at their front door to offer assistance.

I really enjoy this author and her progressive historical romances. The heroes are charming, supportive, and swoon worthy, the women fierce and highly intelligent, and I don’t even care how historically inaccurate they might be because the storyline is so interesting and the pacing keeps me engaged from start to finish.

This couple worked for me for a variety of reasons, but mainly because I loved how they connected through their medicine and their physical chemistry did the rest. Katherine is prickly at times, mainly because she’s been put into a impossible situation by her father and brother, and has experienced love, loss and the pain of war. It is understandable that she would be standoffish and wary of Harland and his motives. Harland was everything I wanted him to be when I read the first two books in the series and the author did a wonderful job of showing him gradually, but completely fall in love with Katherine.

I highly recommend this series. Final Grade-B-

Katherine Wright is a healer and her family are smugglers near Dover. Her brother has been shot and she is trying to stop the bleeding when someone knocks on their door. Holding a rifle, she answers and instead of soldiers she faces the wealthy widowed Dr. Harland Hayward, Baron Strathmore. Harland spends a lot of his summer at his sister’s nearby estate and has come to help. The soldiers do come, but Harland makes them leave the house, so they burn the Wright’s barn. He gets their wagon and takes him to his sister’s estate to heal. Katherine goes with him.

What Katherine doesn’t know is that Harland has connections to smugglers up and down the coast. She is glad her brother is healing and surprised to be offered a teaching post by his sister who has a summer program for young ladies who want more in life than marriage. He leaves with a shipment for King, a mysterious underworld lord, who Harland works for at times. She goes after him as he will need her help to get four injured young Frenchmen back to France.

The rest of this story you’ll have to read as I won’t spoil it. I will say Captain Black and King make a short appearance which makes me hope their stories will be coming soon. This is one of those books that’s hard to put down and I can easily recommend it.

What a fun read!! Harland is a baron, a physician and a smuggler - any two of which should not go together. Kate is a smart, brave, intelligent woman who has medical training from her time patching up soldiers in the war. When the two first meet, Kate has a gun pointed at Harland - not your typical meet cute but this couple is not typical.

This story was a great adventure - prison breaks, smuggling liquor and art, deception, love - it’s all here!

Thank you very much to Forever for the free review copy in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to Netgalley as well for the digital copy that allowed me to sneak in some reading when I couldn’t put it down.

I'm a big Kelley Bowen fan so when I saw this book I had to read it. A Rogue by Night is book 3 in The Devils of Dover series. The series is about an unconventional family consisting of two sisters, their brother, who is not only a Baron but a doctor, and two eccentric aunts. I've read the previous two books and loved them.
A Rogue by Night is about the brother, Sir Harland Hayward. A Baron, a doctor and a smuggler. Yes, a smuggler. He is living a double life and none of his family knows about it. After their parents died, the family found themselves in heavy debt and Harland started smuggling to save his family from financial ruin.
You also get to meet the intelligent, brave and courageous Katherine Wright. Her family has been smugglers for years and she also assisted them when she was young. Returning to Dover after following a lover into war and saving lives as a surgeon, Katherine finds her family working for a new boss. Her brother is severely injured and can't continue the job they were working on. Katherine has to step back into the shoes of a smuggler, a job she told herself she'd never do again.
Katherine and Harland soon cross paths and find themselves working together on a large job. Will Harland reveal his work as a smuggler to Katherine? Will Katherine allow herself to love again?
I really enjoyed this book. I love the unconventional, for their time, characters. They understood each other because of this. Him, a member of the peerage and a doctor, not willing to give one up for the other. Her, trying to help her family and convincing people that she, as a woman, could also be a capable surgeon. Harland made Katherine feel like an equal and never demanded more from her than what she could give. My favourite parts of the book was where they both told the other to take what they needed. *swoon*

I've not come across a story I haven't loved by the fabulous Kelly Bowen. Her writing is witty, captivating, and fast paced. The chemistry between the leads is always perfection. And I never want the story to end, patiently waiting for the next book in a series to be published. Which is never soon enough.

A Rogue by Night is the third book in the Devils of Dover series, though can be read as a standalone. I do suggest reading the other two in the series, though they can be read out of order.

Sir Harland Hayward is a peer of the realm (Baron), a physician who has been to war, and a smuggler, forced into the "trade" when he inherited mounds of debt from his father. On one auspicious evening when cargo is smuggled into Dover, he finds himself in the home of Katherine Wright. Her brother was unknowingly smuggling for the Baron and found himself shot. Using his role as a physician, he's able to help heal those injured in the process, as well as continue to smuggle goods across the Channel.

However, when he meets Katherine, he can't deny the spark they have. Nor does he want to hurt her or her family. But Katherine is no simpering miss. She's a surgeon in her own right, having treated men at war. And also a former smuggler herself. She knows the Baron is suspicious and one not to trust. Yet he makes an offer she cannot refuse, pulling her back into the life she desperately wants to leave.

Of course they fall in love and have their HEA. But it's one that they work for. And it's ultimately Katherine who saves Harland.

Love this book, love this series, love this author!

Another excellent historical romance by Kelly Bowen. Her characters are believable people you can root for; neither too perfect, nor too flawed. Her historical settings (this time among the smugglers operating along the Devon coast after the Napoleonic wars, and the doctors who treat them) are well-researched and add depth to the plot. And, as always, the romance is grounded in both desire and consent by both parties, and shines all the brighter for it. In this case, both parties have been deserted by former lovers, and need to establish trust and faith in a partnership of true equals. I look forward to Kelly Bowen's next book!

A Rogue by Night by Kelly Bowen is book Three in The Devils of Dover Series. This is the story of Katherine Wright and Harland Hayward. I have read the previous books but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Harland had taken on the job of smuggler to help his family and him being a Dr able him to travel at odd hours, not to mention help the smugglers that were injured along the way. Katherine at one time was one of the best smugglers but she choose to travel away and pursue her passion for doctoring.
When she returns to Dover she learns that her family is pretty heavily into the smuggling world. Her brother has been hurt and her father isn't doing good. Katherine convinces hr family that they need to get out but the have to do one last job which she has to do. Harland and Katherine end up meeting of course which leads them to start to have feelings for each other , but they know how dangerous it is right now with smugglers being hunted down.
Enjoyed their story.

A story that had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The action is pretty much non-stop and the characters are quirky and fun and honest (okay, most of the time). I was reading along and all of a sudden I had read half the book in one sitting. I really like the fact that these characters were not the norm (we have seen plenty of books about smugglers, but how many contain two doctors who were in the war). And let’s forget one of my favorite characters who is peppered throughout Ms. Bowen’s books, King. I think everyone loves him and really wants his story. The suspense is killing me. Fun book and great reading.

In a Rogue By Night Kelly Bowen gives us a serious take on life and love. Available for purchase May 28, 2019, I'm not sure the word romance, as we expect, fits this story. Katherine Wright and Dr. Harland Hayward, a.k.a. Baron Strathmore, are both dealing with disappointment, resignation, and PTSD . Both were working in the field during the war Napoleonic wars, tending to wounded and dying soldiers. It left both with horrid memories, bad dreams and a loss of faith in most everything. Both have had awful experiences in the love arena and their walls are most definitely up, and reinforced. Instant attraction becomes hard to fight and ultimately wins the day, this of course begins to break down the emotional walls and allows love into their hearts. How this couple handles the situations they're thrown into is painful and rewarding to observe. Their faith, admiration and trust in each other becomes a testament to the power of love and finding "the one".

Ms Bowen has written a powerful story with a troubling journey for our couple. It's definitely worth adding to your Summer reading list. While I was uncomfortable at times during the tale, I'm still glad I read until the lovely ending. Have tissues handy. Happy reading.

I started this book and couldn't put it down. From the very beginning of the story, it was action packed.
The heroine, Katherine, or Kate, as she was called by family, is technically a mid wife. But having been to the war, she has gained a lot of medical knowledge and experience. If not for her gender, she would be considered a physician. She has been through a lot in her young life and has become jaded because of it.
The hero, Baron Strathmore, Harland, is a physician. His father owned a shipping company, which was in great debt . Upon the death of his father, Harland had to make a deal with the devil in order to save the company and protect and provide for his sisters. ( Side note: Books 1 &2 in the series are about his sisters)
Both Harland and Katherine have also suffered in their personal relationships. These two damaged people are so much alike. Can they help to heal each other? Or will the secret Harland is keeping about his deal with the Devil be the one thing Katherine can't accept.
The adventure starts with the opening paragraph and goes right through to the end.
I absolutely loved this story. It was different, just as the first 2 books in the series were. Kelly Bowen has fast become one of my favorite authors! Well done!

***3.5 Stars rounded up to 4 ***

Well, I’m going to tell you two things right up front. (1) I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced, action-filled book. (2) Be prepared to suspend any credulity you have because there is not one – nope, not one – historically accurate thing in the book. I believe there should be a separate sub-genre for books like this because they can’t rightly be called ‘historical romance’ or ‘Regency romance’ because there is nothing historical or Regency about the book. Maybe there should be another sub-category – like ‘fantasy historical romance’. The same has been true for the entire series so far.

Harland Hayward, Baron Strathmore, became a physician because that was just who he was. Society doesn’t condone it, but that doesn’t matter to him. He’s also caught in a snare and has been for many years – with many more to go. In order to save his family, he agreed to work – for twenty years – for an underworld kingpin named King. Being a physician makes the smuggling easier because he has a handy excuse for being out and about at strange times and places – and he can care for any of the smugglers who are injured. That is how he meets our heroine – her brother was badly injured and Harland went to care for him, only to find he was already being cared for by someone else.

Miss Katherine Wright has quite a history. She was born into a smuggling family and grew up learning to be good at it. She was told that she could be the best smuggler there ever had been because of her skills, cunning, and intelligence. Her mother was a midwife as well as a smuggler and Katherine learned her medical skills as well. Katherine didn’t want to be a smuggler and she didn’t want her family to be smugglers either – constantly in danger of being found out. So, when the opportunity presented itself, she left Dover and followed the drum where she learned and perfected the skills of a surgeon.

When Katherine returned to Dover, it was to learn that her father and brother were still smugglers and Captain Buhler is obsessed with catching them. Buhler is a fanatic that will do anything to catch smugglers – burn homes, arrest feeble old men – it doesn’t matter to him. She knows she has to get her family away from that life, but they have to finish that last job that was interrupted when her brother was injured. She’ll have to step in and finish it for him. That is nearly her undoing.

The story is full of action – smugglers, soldiers, prison breaks, underworld kings – you’ve got some of all of it in this book. The romance was steamy and very believable. Overall, an enjoyable though unbelievable read.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. A Rogue by Night by Kelly Bowen is the third book in her Devils of Dover Series. It can be read as a stand-alone but it’s an excellent series so I do recommend reading them all. The hero in this book is Dr. Harland Hayward, Baron Strathmore never one to follow the expected path he is trying to restore the family fortune by smuggling as well as being a doctor which is generally unheard of for a baron. Katherine Wright is also a doctor as well as from a family of smugglers although she is trying to get her family out of the business. They meet when her brother is wounded during a run and Harland comes to check on him not realizing that Kate is just as competent a surgeon as he is. Kate is a most excellent heroine she is smart, strong, loyal and competent. The story is as much of an adventure story as it is a romance and I enjoyed it very much. I loved that Harland always treats Kate as his equal. Medium steam. Publishing Date May 28, 2019 #NetGalley #ARogueByNight #KellyBowen #forevergrandcentralpublishing #DevilsOfDover

I read Kelly Bowen's series Season For Scandal and absolutely loved them. The first book I gave 4 stars, but the next two were 5 stars, I enjoyed them that much. I added her to my list of favorite authors. I have all her other ones, but haven't had a chance to read them yet. Since I started The Devils of Dover series reading book three, I was thrilled to discover that it totally stood alone. And with reading A Rogue By Night, I had confirmation that her being on my favorite authors list was no mistake!

Katherine Wright is a member of a family of smugglers; she actually used to be a smuggler herself. However, as a surgeon who used her vast skills in the battlefields on the Continent, she had no desire to go back to smuggling ever again. When her brother Matthew is shot, Kate is patching him up when she hears someone approaching; that someone is Sir Harland Hayward, a baron, physician....and perhaps something else? When soldiers arrive looking for Matthew, Harland and Kate manage to hide him and make it appear that Kate is the patient. Thus begins an exciting story of smuggling, deception, secrets, love and sacrifice.

I found this to be such an incredible romance between two damaged people. They both would do anything to protect the ones they love. They had secrets they felt they needed to keep, and trust had to slowly build between them around those secrets. When they do get together physically, the scenes were incredibly sensual; the yearning was palpable. Was the story historically accurate regarding female surgeons and smuggling? I have no idea and to tell the truth, I frankly don't care. I was totally drawn into Kate and Harland's beautiful romance and the exciting storyline, and that's all that matters to me. It was everything I want in a romance.

I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
