I was so excited when I heard that Rainbow Rowell had a graphic novel coming out--her books rank among some of my all-time favorites. While two chapters isn't near enough for me to say whether or not I like the book or not, I can say that the artwork is delightful and the characters are interesting. The dialogue isn't as funny or witty as I was hoping--especially considering Rowell's wizardry with dialogue--but again, two chapters doesn't feel like enough content to judge.

I'd like to thank Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I did not enjoy this at all, I wanted too, desperately, I love Faith Erin Hicks, I love her art style, I generally love her writing style as well. My experiences with Rainbow Rowell, have been the opposite, I find her writing style is not for me. I requested this based on my absolute love of Hicks, as well as my want to like something written by Rowell. Unfortunately, this book won't be it, again the writing style killed it for me, the dialog seemed strained, especially for a friendship, I felt no connection between the two characters at all. I love the art, gives me nameless city vibes, which of course I personally own and our library owns, the script is just, forced. I'm going to have to pass on ordering for our library.

This is a chapter sampler.

The art by Hicks is colorful and animated. The story-line is wacky and huge lovey dovey crush infused. Would love to see more.

I wish this was a full ARC! I'm dying to know what happens! This chapter sampler shows all of the trademarks of Rainbow Rowell's writing style, humor, and awesome characters. The artwork by Faith Erin Hicks is on point and matches lovingly with the text. I will for sure get and read the actual graphic novel next month.

I want more! I am a huge fan of Rainbow Rowell and this is just as intriguing as her other titles. The art is gorgeous and the color palette is dreamy. It has a really nice fall vibe to it. I find it really hard to give something a star rating based on a sample chapter, but so far I am really liking it.

This chapter sampler of Pumpkinheads was a fun, quick read. I wonder what will happen with Josiah and the Fudge Girl. The sampler definitely makes me want to read more!

I haven't posted a review anywhere yet since this is just a sampler. I love where this is going! I can't wait to read the rest of it when it comes out.

I''m intrigued by this short preview, but don't know that I could get a gist of what the novel is ABOUT in 18 pages. A lot could happen, but I like it so far. The friendship is fun, and I loved the map illustrations. I'm confused about why there were...scratch marks? Hatching?...on the characters faces under their eyes, but I thought it was well done. Can't wait to see the color out in the real world.

Super cute! PUMPKINHEADS has everything you could wish for in a Halloween graphic novel; Diverse, likeable, intelligent characters, complicated love lives, friendship, fun illustrations, and most importantly - PIE!
Can't wait to read the full novel!

Thanks to NetGalley and Publishers for providing me with an ARC of the first couple of chapters. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am always and forever here to read anything and everything Rainbow Rowell writes, so let’s just get that out of the way now. Combine that with art from Faith Erin Hicks (LUMBERJANES, HELLO), and I am HERE FOR IT. As this was a chapter sampler, this review will be a little short. These first few chapters set the scene of Pumpkinheads, a story about Josiah and Deja, who come together every fall season (September 1- Halloween) to work at a pumpkin patch. Next year they are going to college, and this story takes place on Halloween, their last shift together. Josiah is sad, and would be happy to mope his way through the night. But Deja has other plans, and this sets the scene for what looks to be a fun, romantic adventure.

The art in this is beautiful, of course. Their faces are expressive and the colors are vibrant. I love fall, so just the setting for this really did it for me. I know what wonderful romantic stories Rowell can tell, so I am excited to see where this story goes! Also, I appreciated the LotR reference!

I was given an advanced reader's copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It's hard for me to get a firm grasp on how I feel about this book from one chapter, as it really only introduces the setting (the pumpkin patch) and the two main characters. That being said, they were very charming! I LOVED the realistic banter, and the character design which allows for very human imperfections in their presentation. Although i feel semi-neutral on a personal level I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the finished book as it'll definitely appeal to my Young Adult readers (or even slightly younger) who are drawn to more contemporary, slice-of-life stories.

This was a great chapter sampler, left me wanting to read more of it. I love the author, and the illustrations were nicely done, so I can’t wait for the entire book to be published. It will definitely be a book I would recommend to friends and library patrons.

I was only able to read an 18-page excerpt, but I enjoyed what I read. The art and dialogue were fun. I would purchase this book for my high school library. Students would definitely check it out.

An exciting first look at what seems like a charming graphic novel. Lovely art paired with fun dialogue. Excited to see the complete story come August.

Hard to review only a few pages of a highly anticipated graphic novel. What I read piqued my interest. High school staff at a farm stand are preparing for October’s onslaught of apple pickers and the closing up shop of their last season working together. They have some romantic history and a competitive nature that seems to be rekindled. The artwork capably evoked the sights and smells of autumn in a place like Nee England. Looking forward to finishing the story.

This is adorable. I love the illustration style, especially the map of the pumpkin patch. I’m interested to see what happens with Josiah and the Fudge Shop Girl. Based off the chapter sampler, this looks like it’s going to be a perfect feel-good graphic novel to read during the fall season.
