It's been awhile since I had read Stillhouse Lake #2 and I was afraid I would forget the storyline. Luckily Caine referred several times to the first 2 books and it brought it all back. Wolfhunter River has all the same characters, however this story takes place away from Stillhouse Lake. Gwen regularly gets phone calls from women looking for her help and/or advice. She gets a disturbing phone call from a mother/daughter in a town called Wolfhunter River and later has to visit the town to speak to law enforcement. Once there she starts to unravel a mystery of missing girls, corrupt town officials, and creepy town natives.

I enjoyed this book and there were some scenes that made my jaw drop. I did find that this book was more of an attempt at keeping Gwen's story going. Something needed to tie her into another mystery or event and it was a little bit of a stretch, but once I got over that I liked it. The end of this book sets up for the 4th which I'm looking forward to reading.

Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine is book #3 in the Stillhouse Lake series, and I was just as hooked with this instalment as I have been with the previous two books.

Rachel Caine writes a well-written story here that is absolutely unputdownable with fabulous characters.

Gwen Proctor keeps trying to restart her life and move on from her psycho (and now dead, ex), but it turns out we live in a world full of crazies. The whole family, including Sam, ends up in a creepy town nearby and get sucked into something just as sinister as what Gwen's run away from.

This was a great next installment in the series. I have bought every book in the series. I find them to be quite an enjoyable, thrilling read. I can't wait to pick up and read the next one. With this next installment, there was further plot and character development, which I always appreciate. Plus, I love the covers of these books.

I will keep reading this series forever! The first two books were absolute fire! This one was just as thrilling, but felt like it was lacking.... something. Something I can’t quite put my finger on... I may have rated it higher if I hadn’t been comparing it to the previous books in the series.

Well written as usual but took a while to get to the point of the entire plot. The last 1/3 of the book is the best. One of my Goodreads friends said that this book is transition type book to set the protagonist up for the next stage of their life and to continue the series. I agree with her. I have the next book in this series and plan to read it but this one was a bit disjointed.

I really enjoyed this series, but I think I'm just burnt out. I'm not a series reader, and the first books I gave 5 stars to because they were amazing! I am just tired of this story line and although Rachel is amazing at writing these books, this one just seemed unnecessary in my opinion.

This book is the 3rd in a series, and to be honest, it had been a while since I read the last book. I was worried I wouldn’t remember the characters or the story, but it only took a few pages and I was right back in it. I REALLY enjoy this series. It’s an intense, action packed thriller with a bit of mystery twist.

Can’t wait to see what comes next.

***SPOILER ALERT*** There are spoilers in this review.
In this book, I was really intrigued by Ellie’s disappearance and I wanted to know the significance of Gwen and her family. The intensity of Gwen’s struggles and her need to escape the documentary crew of “Melvin’s Helper” was strong. To get out of town and away from the constant berating, she accepts the task of going to Wolfhunter and investigating a dramatic experience she witnesses over the phone. Vee, a fifteen-year-old, calls in a desperate moment. Gwen travels to help her. I was also engrossed in Sam Cade’s history. In the series, although I liked him, I had a feeling something was lying beneath the surface. I was right. I knew there was darkness in him, but I was surprised to know how deep it ran. Betrayal so deep it shatters a relationship with Gwen that had once held strong.

I enjoyed Caine’s ability to propel the story forward, give us enough information to keep us guessing, and the pov changes added to the suspense and thrill of the story. The imagery and ability to change our emotions is such a skill Caine possesses. I feel like all my emotions take a front seat when I read her book.

I kind of like that although, Ellie is found and Vee is rescued from certain death, the end of the story wasn’t completely resolved. Sam and Gwen have so much to work through and figure out, and I think it is a reality. Caine doesn’t give us an unrealistic expectation of what could happen. Instead, she leaves us with an ambiguous ending to what happens with Conner, Lanny, Sam, and Vee. It’s so realistic to know that traumatic experiences take a long time to work through. I’ve become so attached to all these characters. The social worker in me wants them to seek therapy and be okay.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series and it’s given me a lasting impression in the case of trauma, fighting for what you believe in, having hope, and knowing that the future may hold pain or happiness. Though it all, family stays together and love binds them forever.

Probably more like 3.5. I really loved the first book in the series and enjoyed the second. This one, unfortunately, did not quite live up to the first 2 in the series.

There were several things I liked about this book. 1) Gwen and Sam's relationship. It is very real, raw, and I think well done. 2) Gwen's relationship with her kids and their characters. I am interested to see where Connor's storyline goes. 3) The action. Caine definitely knows how to keep up suspense.

Unfortunately there were also a lot of things I didn't like. Nothing seemed to happen for the first 60% of the book. It was just recapping how awful their lives are and how they'll never get a moment's peace. That's been the entire focus of the first two books. It was unnecessary to devote the first half of this book to that. I also know I will be the unpopular opinion here, but I didn't like how far off from the original story this went. The first focuses so much on Melvin and that part of their lives that the main story of this book just felt like an add on to a criminal minds episode. There was no logical flow to them being involved in Wolfhunter other than the always end up in crappy situations. However, I liked the way she wrapped it up to lead into future books without this disconnect or lack of logical lead in.

I don't know how the author comes up with these things (or any author for that matter) but this is such a fantastic series. I really feel for Gwen/Gina and everything she has gone through after discovering her husband was a serial killer.

This book still continues along the path of stalkers trying to make her life miserable because she had to have known what her husband was doing. Enter Miranda, she is a co-founder of Lost Angels and she is out to destroy Gwen. I get that she lost her daughter to Gwen's husband, but why does she want to destroy Gwen's life? She is a bit delusional.

The book takes another turn with the disappearance of a little girl and a call from a woman in Wolfhunter saying her life is in danger and she knows too much about a situation. Gwen sometimes helps women that want to escape a dangerous situation but since she wasn't given much information about what is going on in Wolfhunter she doesn't take it as seriously as she might with more details. That is until she receives a call from the woman's daughter which sets things in motion.

So not only is Gwen dealing with those trying to destroy her life (and her children's), she finds herself smack dab in this small town with a backwoods mentality and a secret...well actually there are probably 2-3 secrets that add some intriguing twists and turns to this story.

I know there is at least 1 more book after this one, but this book could have ended here. There is no cliff hanger ending and things are mostly tied up. So now I'm wondering how this ending plays into the next book and what could possibly happen to Gwen next.

Excellent series!

This was crazy thrilling but also crazy ridiculous - a bit more than I could suspend disbelief for. That being said, onto book 4 haha!

Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine is book #3 in the Stillhouse Lake series. Gwen Proctor is the ex-wife of serial killer Marvin Royal. Gwen has a hard time escaping the notoriety associated with her ex-husband’s crimes. However, this time Gwen is trying to help a young girl in a remote part town all while trying to keep her family safe from those who believe she was in on Marvin’s crimes

The Stillhouse Lake series is one of my favorite series. I’m in love with the complex characters, the action and the resilience of the characters. I can’t wait to read the next installment in this series.

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Synopsis from NetGalley/Publisher
Gwen Proctor escaped her serial-killer husband and saved her family. What she can’t seem to outrun is his notoriety. Or the sick internet vigilantes still seeking to avenge his crimes. For Gwen, hiding isn’t an option. Not when her only mission is to create a normal life for her kids.

But now, a threatened woman has reached out. Marlene Crockett, from the remote town of Wolfhunter, is panicked for herself and her daughter. When Gwen arrives in the small, isolated rural community, Marlene is already dead—her own daughter blamed for the murder. Except that’s not the person Marlene feared at all. And Gwen isn’t leaving until she finds out who that was.

But it may already be too late. A trap has been set. And it’s poised to snap shut on everyone Gwen loves. Her stalkers are closing in. And in a town as dark as Wolfhunter, it’s so easy for them to hide…

This has been a great series, and one that I'll happily keep reading! The series begins with the main character, Gina Royal (who later begins calling herself Gwen Procter), and her two children coming to terms with the shocking discovery that her husband/the kids father is a serial killer. Many obstacles challenges ensue...

All three books have strong suspense and a great use of small town setting with characters who really keep you wondering who to believe and who's up to no good!

Gina/Gwen is a character to root for, as she increasingly becomes such a brave and fierce defender of her children. The end of book 2 wrapped up the initial Gina/Melvin story, so the focus in book 3 begins to shift more to Gwen/Sam, and a new set of challenges they're facing.

Book 3 took a little while to set up the new direction, so it takes a bit of patience, but before long there's plenty of non-stop action and crazy things going on in the town of Wolfhunter River.

A satisfying read, and I'm excitedly looking forward to book 4 coming out sometime in 2020.

I was very curious about how Rachel Caine would continue the series, when the main plot was finished in the last book. To be honest I didn't have high expectations. I will say, I was captured by the story, however I didn't find it as good as the previous two books. I think the series would have been stronger overall with only the two first books.
I would recommend it the people who loved the characters from the first two books, and who loved how you could never trust someone.

Another great installment in the Stillhouse Lake series. This book is a super fast-paced read. I do find some similarities between all the books, but I still enjoyed this one by itself. I was very satisfied with the ending and am greatly anticipating the next book which should take a slightly different direction.
