The message brought forth in this book is a message that needs to be heard and listened to. I commend the author on allowing us to be privy to her journey and how it has shaped the woman she is today. Awesome read. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the arc of this book in return for my honest review. Receiving the book in this manner has no bearing on this review.

The shooting at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston reverberated through the world. This very personal perspective from the daughter of one of the victims was striking and powerful to read. This book was real and raw, with a moving message about racism, forgiveness and activism. I love reading memoirs and true life stories, and this one was no exception. Very well done!

This book is very near to home for me. It is about the Charleston South Carolina shootings at Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church, in downtown Charleston on June 17, 2015. I have lived in Charleston for almost 15 years, it is my home now and it breaks my heart when some of your own are gunned down by a kid who has messed up priorities. This book is also about forgiveness, loss, love and how we need stricter gun laws. This past weeks shootings should be even more evidence of that.
Sharon wrote this book because she lost her mother in this shooting. She was one of the nine people killed that day by Dylan Roof. Loosing a parent is hard enough without loosing them in such a horrific and sudden way. In the book Sharon talks about her mother and their life together with their family. How her mother worked her tail off to provide for her family and how when she "found Jesus" she devoted her life to the church. Reverend Risher also talks about her own life before the shootings and how her mother pulled her through some of the darker times. She also discusses the after effect of what Dylan did that evening and how it reshaped her family. She talks about how this country needs stricter gun laws and the people behind the scenes trying to make that happen.
This book is very well written and powerful. Yes, it will make you cry a bit, but it might also open your eyes to how our country views racism and gun control. It is also a story of loss, love, how forgiveness doesn't always come easy. I would definitely recommend this book to pretty much everyone. You may want to read it before you let your teenager read it to make sure they are mature enough to handle this book. However if they do, I would suggest discussing it with them after they are done.

This is a powerful book even as it is clear that it's the author's first work. Rev. Risher offers firsthand testimony of the loss that comes after gun violence, which is vital in today's society. That being said, it seemed disjointed and as though it could have benefited from another round or two of editing. I'll be keeping an eye on Rev. Risher's career as an activist and speaker and look forward to hearing more of her voice.

This book was so engaging and challenged me on every level. The author’s raw emotion came through in every page as she described her journey from the moment she learned of the tragic shooting involving her mother through to the last page. She deals with topics of racism, gun control laws and forgiveness all the while being authentic, sharing her personal story. I could not put this book down and I was challenged to think about what I contribute to society as a Christian, where my faith fits with these very relevant topics. I would highly recommend this book!

Oh my goodness. Powerful book. Author gives such a wonderful testimony all through the book! Sorry that this terrible act happened to her family. This is a book everyone needs to read.

Thank you to author, publisher, and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free, it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
