Unfortunately I did not finish this book.
It was just not for me.
I would say there will be readers out there that love this. I have so many books to read that if it doesnt catch my attention pretty quickly, I have to put it down.

The synopsis of this book had me intrigued from the get go but as soon as i had read even just a couple of chapters i knew it wasn't going to be the type of mystery thriller that would keep me guessing until the very end.

I think the thing about this book that stopped me from enjoying it was there was no character that I liked, and maybe that was meant to be but rather than make the story even better, it nearly made me put the book down from the beginning. Even Lee who was meant to be the 'good' detective was on the morally grey side and made choices which annoyed me every time. Especially her choices when it came to Connor. Their shared backstory didnt really bring anything to the story and I get they it was meant to be part of the whole character reveal but instead they just felt like filler chapters.

The whole ending and the big mystery reveal was not really a shock to me, as someone who has watched many crime tv shows and read a fair share of thrillers I feel like this plot has been used and overly done to the point where it was quite easy to guess what was going to happen from the halfway mark.

The whole focus around both of the wives and whether or not they could have children really irked me. Every chapter seemed to focus on how much their relationship mattered in relation to children and what other people thought of them. The whole mystery also seemed to use this as the motive for murder and it just didn't work for me.

I think the only positive I can give this was it was definitely a quick read and it was just what I needed to keep my mind off other things.

I really enjoyed this book!! The author definitely has a way with words. He does a very good job setting the scene. Lots of twists and turns. You think you have it figured out, and then - woop, another turn. Kept me engaged, and interested. Didn't want to put it down.

I have read a couple of books by Gregg Olsen and enjoyed. Whilst this book was very enjoyable and kept me turning the pages, i would say that i still prefer 'The Sound of Rain'. I shall look forward to reading more books by this author. Recommended.

My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review which i have freely given.

Awaiting Amazon to publish my review.

OH, WHAT TANGLED WEBS WE WEAVE!

Adam and Sophie and their three-year old little girl have set out on a long weekend for some alone time and family bonding. They are staying at a secluded beach area with small cabins and all the amenities that would be needed for a real getaway. They plan to go out on a small boat in the lake and also do some digging for clams and barbecuing, swimming and getting lots of sun. This time is just what is needed for a break from their busy work lives and getting back to basics.
There are two cottages next to them, one has a woman with her two grandchildren, and the other cabin has a young couple staying there. Adam is on the boat with his daughter while Sophie us reading a book on the deck, when suddenly Adam sees her fighting with someone who carries her off. There is another witness but when the detectives arrive, they seem to be suspicious of Adam (naturally) even though Adam is distraught over witnessing what appears to have been an abduction of his beautiful wife.
What has happened to Sophie? Who and why would someone abduct Adam's wife. There will be more questions than answers as the story rapidly progresses, but all questions will be answered by the end of this very suspenseful and compelling book.

"Lying Next To Me" was a wonderful read for me. There were so many twists and turns that my head was spinning. At one point, I thought I had the ending figured out, but I was happily wrong. Sometimes I really enjoy being wrong. Gregg Olsen is an exceptional writer and I have picked up several more of his books for future reading. I can't say enough good things about this book except hurry and make sure this on your reading list!

Suspenseful and thoughtprovoking, Lying Next to Me examines revenge at it's very base. How far would you go to get back at someone? And who would you let get caught in the crossfire?
I really liked the book. It was thrilling, at times, but also had a quieter, haunting quality, the anticipation building as we work to find out what exactly happened - and especially why.

Gregg Olsen writes great mystery/ thrillers that always leave the reader ready for his next book. He builds the characters so well that you can see their faces and know they are lying as you read. Trying to figure out how a group of strangers could be involved in a murder is one of the many things you'll love about this book.

Hmmmm who dunnit? People are lying and being misleading. Lying next to me is a mystery that may seem obvious, yet no character is 100 percent likable.

Lying Next to Me is a solid and well written mystery. It stars Adam Warner, who on vacation with his wife Sophie and daughter Aubrey, sees his wife being abducted by a strange man while Adam and his daughter are out to sea planting crab pots. Another gentleman out walking the beach also sees the abduction, but no one was really able to get a good look at the abductor. The next day, Sophie is found dead. The police have very few clues to go on and even fewer suspects, so who did it and why?

I thought the "whodunit" was pretty obvious fairly early on, but the how and why took a long time to become clear. I've read other novels by Gregg Olsen, and I always enjoy his books. He's a talented writer who knows how to develop a good mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed his latest.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing me a digital ARC in return for an honest review.

This is full of unreliable narrators and unlikeable characters, and I absolutely adored it. You have no idea who is lying, why they are lying, or what truly happened until the very end, and even then, you're not quite sure whether to believe what you've been shown. While on a long weekend trip, a husband and young daughter, out on a boat, see the wife being attacked and dragged off in the middle of the day. Another couple, renting one of the three home in this same little cottage community, have their own issues. He's an alcoholic who drinks to blackout and she's a high powered attorney desperate to have a child. Then, there is the detective investigating the case, and how she has ties to the husband. Nothing is as it seems here, and it's very interesting to see how their lives intersect as the story unfolds. There are so many lies and manipulations!!!

I read this book in two sittings. A very well plotted story told from different perspectives of the characters. Adam and Sophie are married but it doesn’t seem to be a faithful marriage although at first you wonder whether either of them have actually cheated on each other or is it just suspicions. Then Sophie is murdered whilst they are away for Memorial Day weekend. But Adam couldn’t have done it as he was with their daughter in a boat and saw his wife being abducted he even had a witness an old man who walked his dog in the beach had seen Sophie grabbed and taken away. Then you have Kristen a Lawyer desperate for a baby and her waiter husband Connor who drinks too much they are also staying in a cabin next door to Adam and Sophie but Connor can’t remember anything as he had too much to drink and Kristen was with him all evening. The lead investigating officer knows Adam he had saved her life when she was younger and had been kidnapped so in her mind Adam couldn’t be involved in anything it was so tragic for him to lose his wife and the daughter to lose her mum. But who is telling the truth and who is lying. It kept me guessing until the final 8 or so chapters then I twigged what the outcome was going to be. But this is a very well written book the characters are relatable the jealousies that are seen in the world of social media. It’s up to date with the times of Facebook and text messaging and shows how things can easily be misconstrued or made to look in a way that someone wants it to look.

I look forward to the next book by Gregg Olsen

Adam and Sophie Warner decided to get away with their three-year-old daughter for Memorial Day weekend. Hood Canal in Washington State is the perfect getaway, and they intend to get the most out of it. But when Adam and his daughter come back from a crabbing expedition on the water, he sees his wife being abducted but cannot get the boat to shore in time to save her. As the days wear on and Sophie is not found, secrets begin to rise to the surface and no one is above suspicion.

Awesome, fast-paced suspense from Olsen! Highly recommended!!

This is my first book by Gregg Olsen and it certainly will not be my last. This was one heck of a book.
It kept me guessing all through the story. Who could be trusted. Who was telling the most lies. It had two stories going in lots of places but they connected in a way too. Lee’s story and Adam’s. It was a story of life altering events that will keep you turning the pages.

The characters were ones you will love to hate, with the exception of Lee and Montrose. Lee had a lot going on in her life at a very young age. Very traumatic events that shaped her into the great Detective she is. She and Adam where childhood friends but they didn’t know each other as adults. Until that fateful day when his wife went missing.

What could possibly have happened to Adam’s wife. Who could have taken her and why. All of this is answered for you. This book is very well written and keeps you turning pages to find out what comes next.

Told from multiple points of view you won’t know who or what to believe. From an innocent child to a cruel vindictive adult this story will keep you captivated until the very end. I felt bad for Adam in so many ways. I felt bad for a few of the characters. But for one my heart broke.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good who done it. It’s a very good book.

Thank you to #NetGalley and #Thomas and Mercer for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. I truly loved this book.

A 5 star book for sure.

I have read a couple of this author's true crime books and enjoyed them, but was reluctant to give his fiction a try based on experiences with authors who didn't "stay in their lane". What a mistake that was!

Wow, what a ride! Twisty thrillers are my favorite genre and this one had plenty of twists to keep me happy. Most of the main characters were wonderfully hateable and self-centered and I was rooting for any one of them to end up the villain.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. I have recently started reading Gregg Olsen and really like his books. He is a really good mystery writer and includes many plot twists in his books. The story involves a couple, Adam and Sophie Warner and their three-year-old daughter, who are vacationing in Washington State’s Hood Canal for Memorial Day weekend. But on the first day of the trip, Adam and his daughter who are in a boat on the lake see his wife Sophie abducted by a stranger. There are other people at the lake and their story lines are included, especially another young couple. The police converge on the scene and Mason County detective Lee Husemann is an old friend of Adam's.

Lee puts together the pieces of Sophie's disappearance and things are certainly not what they seem. Lee's past also comes into play as she learns more about Adam, the person who once saved her. Olsen weaves the story together and learns that everyone is not telling the truth about what they know or they have yet to reveal all the lies they’ve hidden from the people they married.

The story begins on the day that Sophie went missing. It was like something right out of a horror movie. You see, Adam witnessed his wife being kidnapped. He was out on the water with his daughter, Aubrey and Sophie was on the beach. Suddenly, Adam sees Sophie getting hit and being carried off by a stranger. He tried hard to reach her but all he could do was paddle like his life depended on it. He couldn’t leave his little girl on the boat so he had to take her to the shore first and by then, Sophie was gone. What a nightmare, right?

This is a brilliant, masterfully narrated whodunit. Who would be brave enough to kidnap a woman in broad daylight? My mind started racing right from the start as I tried to solve the mystery. I had no idea where the story was going until the halfway mark. Through the chapters, we get to follow the investigation but we also get to keep up with Adam in the aftermath of his wife’s death.

There are a lot of unlikable characters in this book; good thing is that they were quite entertaining to read about. I enjoyed Lee’s (the lead investigator) narrative through the investigation and I was also captivated by her back story. Other characters had me scratching my head as I tried to decide whether they were good or bad.

Lying Next to Me is twisty, suspenseful, well-written and quite captivating. I can’t wait to discover the author’s other books. His writing is brilliant!
