Loved everything about this book! Read it in one day and couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed the author’s use of alternating each chapter from the POV of the two main characters, as she kept the story going between the dual time periods. Lots of twists and turns with a surprise ending, I highly recommend this one!

She befriends the local coffee shop owner who enlists Allison to help her solve the mystery of her best friend, Maureen’s, disappearance 30 years ago. Has Allison’s questions about this case putting her in danger? Will anyone every know what happened to Maureen?

I loved the back and forth perspectives. Present day via Allison’s POV and the past’s via Maureen’s POV. It was like two different stories unfolding simultaneously and eventually all coming together into one. I thought I saw the ending coming, but a quick surprise plot twist threw me for quite the loop! The first half of the book is a little slow, lots of story and character building and not a ton of action but just enough mystery to keep me flipping pages, anxious to find out what happened to Maureen that summer. There are some serious feminist, girl power vibes in this book too. Really enjoyed this read!

In a resort town on the Jersey shore in 1986’ Maureen, a carnival girl, disappears and is forgotten until in present day, Allison, a disgraced meteorologist and divorcee comes to town and starts looking into the mystery of her disappearance. I’m not sure how I feel about this book. I liked they way the POV changed between Maureen and Allison but I didn’t really relate to any of the characters. Allison is too uptight and even though she called out her cheating husband on live TV, she doesn’t really own it. Maureen through no fault of her own has been forced to fend for herself but seems often to make very poor choices. The rest of the characters aren’t really likable even though I think they are meant to be. I predicted who the killer was right away and I was right. I know the ending was supposed to be a plot twist but I had guessed it already and wasn’t surprised. It was a good read but not great. One Night Gone is a good thriller with a engaging plot. The characters are well developed and the storyline keeps you interested. The book is written well and I would read more by this author.

I actually really liked this one! Granted, it took me a long time to get into it, but once I did I couldn't put it down. There's a lot of characters which I feel like usually can get confusing but all the people in this book were well detailed and different enough you could easily keep them apart. It's told in two narratives, Allison (current) and Maureen (past). I never cared that much for Allison and I think that's why it took long for me to get into. I had nothing against her, but I don't know nothing clicked there for me.

Didn't guess the mystery or anything and was super satisfied over all.

Also side note reading the thank you's at the end made me like this author a lot 👍

A disappearance and possible murder on the Jersey Shore. This book was written with me in mind. I grew up on the Jersey Shore, so it was a nice jaunt back there through Tara Laskowski's eyes.
I always enjoy a POV shift, and this book did it exceptionally well. I was kept guessing throughout the novel, while still becoming attached to both Maureen and Allison. All the characters were quite well-developed, and I was invested in the dichotomy between the rich and the regular folk. Throw in a disappearance, and this book quickly becomes a fierce read. The female relationships in this novel were especially well-crafted, and I found myself comparing them to relationships in my own life. I applaud Laskowski's ability to plot through the thirty years, and give us a reveal that felt relevant and threaded throughout.
I very much recommend this novel to mystery fans, and those who yearn to smell the ocean breeze on the shore.

I was immediately intrigued by the description of this book. Allison Simpson is trying to escape her past - an Embarrassing Thing happened to her, which the reader finds out as the novel goes on, but at the beginning we're just with her as she moves away from that past. Allison moves to Opal Beach, a tourist community, but it's winter and the place is quiet. The only denizens are the few year-round residents, and they all know each other - it's a small, silent town.

Flash over to Maureen, a young woman who comes to Opal Beach in the eighties. She's traveling with a carnival group, and she's part of the whole young-and-wild scene on the boardwalk. She, too, has some secrets and is looking to escape her past. The narrative flips back and forth between the women - between the past and present, between winter and summer - as Allison starts to wonder what exactly is going on in the sleepy, cold beachside town, and Maureen's life begins to change too.

I loved both characters as well as the theming in this novel - the unique setting, the role of the weather, and the final surprise twists. The writing is smart and easy, yet also cuts sharply, with vivid imagery and high tension throughout.

What I thought was going to be a mystery ensconced in a beach community turned into much more and I quite liked it. I'm going to keep this spoiler free but will say that the dual timeline served the story well. <br /><br />In 1986, Maureen is a young woman working at the carnival in Opal Beach. One night, she goes missing. In the present day, Allison is at a low point having lost her job, her home & being recently divorced. At least she has her sister and her long-lived plant, Linus. Allison accepts an off-season, house-sitting job in Opal Beach and before too long she's following the trail of long lost Maureen. This is a deep dive down the rabbit hole and I was pleased with the surprising turns and even those that weren't so surprising. The pace was well done and kept me wanting to know what was next. I very much enjoyed the ending and where Allison wound up. The program was pitch perfect and made me wish it were real because I'm sure every news market in the country has cases that can be highlighted and perhaps resolved. It wasn't what I was expecting in the book so it came as a hopeful ending note.<br /><br />My favourite random quote of the book: <i>"When Dolores's team- the Manech County Vixens- was announced, the cheers were deafening, echoing off the gymnasium walls. This story is told from dual POV's and timelines (which is something I like). The story grabbed my attention and I found myself shirking my household duties just to read a few more chapters. Overall, I enjoyed the book but feel like maybe it should be marketed as "New Adult". It definitely had some YA moments. when I thought it was going to be mostly Mystery/Thriller.

Overall a good read and would be a nice vacation/beach read.

It took me awhile to get into the story. The mystery/thriller aspect was intriguing and the ending took me completely by surprise. The blending of the two timelines was very well done. All in all, a ok read but not a favorite of mine.

I liked this one. I wanted to love it, as I usually love books set in beach towns. It was just a little too slow-burny for me. The story is told from two different time periods which was interesting and I really liked the two main characters, especially Allison. Allison is a little bit older than the twenty-somethings I have been used to lately. I was just hoping for more suspense and was not crazy about the supernatural aspect. I would try more from this author.

Dual timeline book about a missing girl and the meteorologist who tries to solve the mystery years later. Quick read that keeps you engaged. However, I though that the ending was a bit rushed and clunky.

Gripping suspense/thriller with two separate plot lines taking place in the past and present. I thoroughly enjoyed the setting, as I am a beach lover. The prose was addictive and I found myself re-reading lines over and over again. Enjoyable, likable characters. Mystery and ending were very satisfying. A definite beach read. Would highly recommend! I will look for more by this author. Thank you to NetGalley for the copy of this book.

While I enjoyed this book, as I almost always do with thrillers, I didn't love it. Opal Beach felt a bit too cliche and the secondary characters were slightly one-dimensional. I did enjoy the plot, however, and as they mystery unfolded, the conclusion wasn't glaringly obvious, which I always appreciate. Definitely not a regrettable read, but not one of my favorites of the year.

One Night Gone is a haunting tale about house sitting in a town full of secrets and lies that all revolve around a missing girl 25years ago.
Now this book is a good mix of general fiction and thriller which means I was able to read before bed and now have nightmares.

3 for neutral. This book is one of those slow burning, non suspenseful type books, which unfortunately just did not grip me. I really thought it sounded intriguing and even possibly scary, but it just didn’t give me either of those things. I am truly a moody reader, and I did give it a few chances, but will update it at a later time it finally grabs me! Will definitely tell the members of Chapter Chatter Pub about this upcoming book!

I picked this up because the cover made me think it would be spooky. It had somewhat spooky elements, but it mostly wasn’t scary at all.

The writing reminded me a lot of a Diane Chamberlain book. It took place in two different times and switched back and forth between the two.

I did love that the main character, Allison, was older. She wasn’t 25, which is unusual in this genre. Allison is still reeling after a bad divorce and she goes to Opal Beach for a quiet winter, not expecting to start a murder investigation.

I liked Maureen, though I wish we had gotten know a little bit more about her childhood. We know her mom was a drug addict, but that’s pretty much it.

The supernatural aspect felt slightly misplaced in a book like this.

I don’t have a ton to say about this book, it was okay. Not great, not horrible. I don’t think it’s very memorable, but I didn’t hate it.
