Four Days in Hitler's Germany gave a very interesting account of the diplomatic meeting between Mackenzie King and Adolf Hitler. It was an easy read through and gave a terrific overview of why King wanted to meet with Hitler, the meeting, and the aftermath of the meeting. It also delved in to the background of Mackenzie King which was very helpful to the reader because it gave some great insight into how his family and his religion affected his political decision making. What was really fascinating to read about though how the Germans handled visiting diplomats and the lengths that they went to in order to cover up what their real agenda was. There were amazing photographs and descriptions in the book as well that did a terrific job linking up with the story and bringing it to life for the reader. Overall, I would give this book four out of five stars and would definitely recommend this book for purchase at any library.

This account of the Canadian Prime Minister's visit to Nazi Germany in 1937 is probably at its weakest when actually recounting the four days in question. There's only so many ways you can write "Mackenzie King met a Nazi notable, enthused about what nice chaps they were, and failed to challenge the abuses of their regime" before it feels a bit repetitive. More successful is the account of Mackenzie King's wider political and personal beliefs and practices, how they made him particularly susceptible to Nazi trickery, and the damage that all did to the very cause he believed he was working for - that of peace. An interesting read.
