An interesting little short story, told in the format of a play about two flight attendants. One newer to the job, who is scared of flying, and one more tenured. The story does a good job of fitting enough information into its limited pages to keep the reader engaged and feel like there was enough content, without feeling like it was lacking.

The aspect of an excerpt or a one-act play is not an anomaly in the mainstream literature world unless it has to do with illustrations or similar. That is why it is interesting to see something like “”Wingspan” [Chris Bohjalian/Vintage/36pgs] which is a diatribe on everything that makes us separate but different at the same time, the ideas that are boiling near the surface and the masks that people wear. In this instance it takes the form of two flight attendants, one grizzled and mature and the other rash and impulsive. One is winding down while one is looking forward. They have their own ambitions. The idea of the younger girl being afraid to fly yet was told to do so at the request of her married boyfriend who eventually dumps her. This speaks to the undeniable lack sometimes of identity and confidence of young adults who would rather sometimes, instead of engaging in life tend to coast a little longer than they should giving rise to radical ideas. This can become dangerous in a sense but also liberating in the fact that ideas are meant to revolutionize at times, civilize at others. How better to explain this than in a one fact play where everything means something else. A

Wingspan by Chris Bohjalian was a short novella about the teaching moments between flight attendants one a veteran in the field and the other new and afraid to fly. Both well-written with underlined meanings, this short novella was great.

I received a review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

WINGSPAN is an engaging, very well-written short story. (It was originally a play.)

The story is conversation between a new flight attendant, Emily, who seems to be afraid of flying; and a more experienced flight attendant, Karen. Bohjalian does a great job of writing two distinct, engaging characters. It was great getting to know the characters in a relative short time, and the reveals are well portioned out.

Very well written, WINGSPAN is a satisfying short story, and a must for fans of the author's full-length novels.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Emily, a young flight attendant who fears flying and Karen who is older and well experienced flight attendant. Emily shows her fear and Karen helps her through it while Emily shares a secret from her past.

Only downfall is I wanted more it was too short and had a great storyline.

I love this author and everything he writes is perfect. Strong author with any topic.

This short - really short- story about two flight attendants was originally a one act play and it shows. Well written, with snappy dialogue, it's about fear of flying, which is, of course, a metaphor for so much ore. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Always a treat to read something written by Bohjalian.

A unique ebook that is a play that Chris Bohjalian wrote. For the longest time, I thought this was associated with his book Flight Attendant, so I was holding off reading it until I could read both and I am so thankful I did a bit of goodreads research and find out that this was not associated with that book.

With two flight attendants as main characters as they are about to work a flight going to London that was 7 hours of flight time. As they say in the play, people get real comfortable quickly in a plane for some odd reason and this happens with these two flight attendants. They quickly share secrets about themselves and one decides to help solve the drama around the other's secret.

I would love to see this play.

I absolutely loved the flight attendant by Chris Bogjalian. So when this short became available a jumped at the chance to read it as well. All I can say is that I love it. Chris Bogjalian had a way of making his stories and characters come alive. I look forward to reading more from him.

This short story is written in the style of a play with two characters. A veteran flight attendant and a relatively new flight attendant with a fear of flying. Although the pace was good, the characters weren't particularly likable and the plot veered away from flying into a statutory rape discussion. I understand how the stress of the situation would get the victim talking, but it just wasn't where I thought this story was going. The synopsis should be clearer that this is not focused on flying. I have enjoyed this author's previous writings, but not so much this one. Quick read.

This is the first piece of writing by Chris Bohjalian that I’ve read, but I’ve always heard good reviews of his novels so I was excited to get a taste of his style from this short one act play. Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf Doubleday for the opportunity to read and review.

I was immediately intrigued by the premise—a young flight attendant who has a fear of flying—and I really enjoyed getting to listen in as she receives advice from her more senior flight partner. The story is short, so no reason to give away more of the plot here, but worth a read as a toe dip into Bohjalian’s work. I will definitely be adding his novels to my to-read list.

I would read just about anything from Chris Bohjalian. I love his work! Wingspan is a short story form written in a play format. It is a conversation between two flight attendants. One of them is terrified of flying. Why would a flight attendant be terrified of crashing? As the story unfolds so does the conversation. I wish it was longer but it was a captivating short story.

Quick script of conversation between flight attendants while waiting to take off. There is some quick drama, some quick counseling, and a little resolution but definitely left you hoping.

Thanks NetGalley!

Who doesn't love Chris Bohjalian's work? okay, i'm sure some of ya'll don't, but man is he talented!

This is a short story about a flight attendant who is scared of flying... seriously. It's unique in the idea that the novella is written in play format.. i've never read a book written like this.
it wasn't my favorite by him, but it's certainly worth checking out.

3.5 stars. Wingspan is basically a conversation between 2 flight attendants as the plane waits in line to take off. One is a seasoned veteran of flying and the other is not exactly new to the occupation, but is still terrified of flying, or rather, of crashing. Why is she a flight attendant if she's afraid to fly? That is the beginning of their conversation that leads to what she will do after the flights on that trip are behind them.
I was hoping for a long Bohjalian story to get lost in as I like to do, but this was more of a short story. That was my only disappointment with the book. Story line is current and relevant.
Thank you NetGalley for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I've read most everything Chris Bohjalian has written so I was naturally curious about this novella. At first I though it might be a prequel to The Flight Attendant, but it was not.

Originally a one act play staring Grace Experience (Bohjalian's daughter) and K.K. Glick, it's a very quick read, basically dialog between two flight attendants. There's veteran attendant Karen and a newbie, Emily who is on her first transatlantic flight from NY to London. Emily is extremely nervous about this flight and starts talking pretty much non stop, unloading her secrets in the process.

I read this from start to finish in bed the other night and thought it was enjoyable enough to recommend.

A very good calling card for this author, of whom I'd never heard. Many people might click through to this without realising it's a play script, but it's a very interesting little piece, with two varying flight attendants. The older one would never pussyfoot around any subject, it seems, and the younger, on her first ever flight to leave the USA, is actually shit scared of the idea of flying over oceans. Together they and we learn what got her to this place. I didn't think it the most easily-staged work, with synchronised flight engine sounds to come in precisely on cue, and not the most visual, but with the right cast it would be great to watch; the story (if slightly unrealistic, it has to be said) is an intriguing one with a nicely modern theme, not overplayed. A strong four stars.
