I’ve been dying to read or listen to a book by Shalini for a while, I keep seeing her name everywhere and everyone raves about her book. So when I saw that this book was available at the library, I was really excited. Not going to lie but I did struggle with the narrator. There were times when I wasn’t quite sure that her voice was the right fit for the book. It didn’t seem to have the normal passion and enthusiasm for a book that I’ve come to get used to from other narrators. But I persevered.

I did get a bit confused at the beginning. I think I’d listened to the audiobook about two times before I even got into the book. Then I spent a lot of my time trying to figure out who I could and couldn’t trust. And to be honest, I wondered if we could even trust Mia. I love I do love a book that makes you question whether you can even trust the main character!!

There were aspects of Mia’s life, which were strange. Because I just read a book a few weeks ago where a girl had lost her memory in it, and there was a whole different spin on her life. I think I was kind of expecting the same thing from this book. In fact, what we got was a woman trying to find her memories, which you’d expect. I would want to get my memories back if I had lost them. Then meeting people for the first time never quite knowing who you could trust, and I always find that aspect fascinating to watch.

Not going to lie the beginning was a struggle, and I couldn’t click with the book. It’s weird to say that because a big part of me was still wanting to know what was going on and was still really interested. I was thinking about the book when I wasn’t listening to it, and get back to it. I struggled but then something clicked and then it was really interesting as we begin to learn new things; you’ve got Piers her boyfriend and then there’s Jack and I was excited by the prospect of where it could go. But then it lagged, which surprised me. Then we got to what I thought was the end, and I was like Oh My God, WOW, this is a different turn of events where I wasn’t expecting this. But it wasn’t the end!!!!

So I was like, Okay, fine. I’ve still got an hour and my audiobook. Where am I going with this? I have to say I did really love that twist I loved how so left field it was and I kind of saw it coming in as well and I’m glad that the author took that punt and I found that I did find that brilliant. I loved the fact that it wasn’t the sort of book I wasn’t expecting.

I can forgive the bit at the beginning which I struggled with because that ending was just so twisty and it was just so clever and very very chilling. I loved how the characters really are not what you expect them to be at all. I did second guess everything; even if I had an idea of where I thought it was gonna go didn’t think it was gonna go that way. So I loved the fact that it was twisty and it did make me think and I’ve really enjoyed that. I enjoyed the final 20% so much and I was hooked then I had to race through just to see what was gonna happen.

This is the first book I’ve read of Shalini so I will be back again to see what else she’s written and then I’ve got a few on my Kindle so now I’ve had this introduction I’m looking forward to seeing what else she has to offer very like say cleverly done at the end.

I attempted to read this book on multiple occasions and gave up due to lack of interest. I gave it one more try, I am 80% into the book and still feel like not much has happened. I end up falling asleep each time I attempt to listen to the audiobook. Even with only 20% left, I am not invested and giving up on trying to read/ listen to this book. Disappointing since I usually enjoy Boland’s novels.

It's been a while since I've read a book with an unreliable narrator and I was in the mood for one so I thought I'd read Girl from the sea which has been sitting on my tbr for too long. I've read a few books by Shalini Boland so I knew I'd been in for an enjoyable read and I wasn't disappointed.

Mia James wakes up on a beach, with no idea who she is or how she got there. The police say she was in a boating accident. A man claiming that he's her boyfriend shows up at the hospital. She has no choice but to trust him. He shows off her perfect house and life, but things don't feel right to her. Fragments of her memory start to return and she feels there's more to what happened to her than meets the eye. It's up to her to put the pieces back together and find out what happened.

I know some people are tired of the amnesia trope but I still love it, especially when it's done right like in Girl from the sea.

This is one of those novels where it's like, who can I trust? Who's telling the truth? There were quite a few unlikeable characters thrown in there too, to keep it interesting.

Mia was an intriguing character. You see her struggling to find who she feels is the real her and balancing that with other people's memories and opinions of her.

I wasn't a huge fan of the ending, but it made sense in the overall story so I can't complain too much.

The girl from the sea is a fast-paced and suspense filled novel that is a must if you love unreliable narrators.

People forget things. That very normal because your brain just has to make selections. Certain memories disappear and make place for new ones. It might annoy you from time to time because you are sad for the loss of some, but on the other hand you are happy about losing others.

What if one day though, you cannot remember anything anymore. Even worse you don’t even recognise yourself when you look in the mirror. You don’t understand why people act the way they do and you start asking questions. Well, let’s say sometimes it’s better just to start over again...

A perfect example how some people can play a role and worm their way into your mind. In the end I did not know who I felt for and who I hated.

This is my sixth book by this author and each and every time she captures my attention from the very first page and she only releases it when I have read the last word of the story. This was another great read. I enjoyed it thoroughly. 5 stars

Thank you

Can you imagine waking up, not knowing who you are, where you are, or, most importantly what happened to you. You have to relearn just who is your friend or enemy - who you can trust and who you cannot. Is everything truly as it seems?

I felt that the author did an excellent job developing her characters and creating a good, hold your interest twist. I definitely recommend.

Another unputdownable read from Shalini Boland!
I immediately felt so much empathy and sorrow for Mia, imagining how I would feel if I was in her situation. Gut-wrenching!
Steadily-paced, intriguing from the get-go, and with a few shocking twists, I throughly enjoyed this one.
The ending may of been a tad rushed, but this is still a read that I would highly recommend!

Wow! I was so engrossed in this, I didn't want to stop reading it! Who was the girl washed up on the beach and how did she get there? Who can she trust? It really had me, I hadn't a clue and I wasn't disappointed when it all came to light. I highly recommend and I look forward to reading more from this fantastic author x

A brilliant read!

This thriller grabs you from the very beginning. The story is so well written that when the major plot twist happens I don’t think many will have guessed it . A brilliant, disturbing and chilling thriller!

This was an ok read, I felt it lost me a bit after the first half. I found Mia annoying after a while and I thought the whole thing after the initial accident and memory loss to be a little unbelievable., especially the apparent ineptness of the police. The idea was a good one but it fell a bit flat with me, It was ok enough to read and it entertained me enough to keep going to the end.

Mia is found washed up on the beach with no memory of what happened to her .She can’t even remember her name or recognize her face in the mirror.Next Piers turns up claiming to be her boyfriend  and that she has a family that loves her but she soon discovers that people around her are lying to her and will stop at nothing to prevent Mia’s memory from returning

The Girl From The Sea by Shalini Boland is  quick psychological thriller with well developed characters.. Full of twists and turns with lots of suspects made it an interesting read.

I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
