An incredible book - I read this to my young daughter, and although she may not have fully comprehended the story, she was engaged and kept her focus. This is a really wonderful way of teaching children about parts of our past that are difficult to discuss, and to continue the story of important figures such as Anne Frank into future generations. Thoroughly recommend.

While this story is never fun to read about, it is still extremely important for everyone to learn, especially children. Hiding the truth about the atrocities that millions faced doesn’t serve anyone. The illustrations in this book are beautiful and will catch childrens’ attention. The writing, while all factual and extremely well done, is not too intense for children.

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book, perfect for introducing younger children to Anne Frank. It is appealing to look at and the illustrations are attractive without detracting from the necessarily more serious tone of the text. This would be an excellent addition to the school library.

Little People, Big Dreams is a series of nonfiction children’s books focused on famous women, past and present. Anne Frank is the third I’ve read in this series and it is quite different from the earlier two (Jane Austen and Mother Teresa)! While the illustrations were wonderful, the subject matter called for a more serious tone. Most of the illustrations are in black and white, while Anne’s diary is a bright orange and yellow gingham. There is also a fair amount of symbolism in the pictures, white birds when there is happiness and hope, black birds when things take a turn for the worse.

Being a book for young children that covers very heavy subject matter, there had to be a delicate balance between communicating the tragedy of what happened while keeping it appropriate for little ones. I do think the author accomplished this, and the beautifully detailed black and white illustrations went a long way in helping to set the tone. Unlike many of the other books in this collection, Anne Frank is sad story steeped in history, a terrible, painful, shameful history. I’d certainly read it with my children who are going to be eight in a week, but I would also be prepared for a lot of questions, questions about topics many parents might not have broached with their young children. For parents who haven’t, I think this book is a wonderful gateway to meaningful and age-appropriate discussions about topics that seem particularly salient today.

Still loving this series and very much looking forward to the next one!

This was a such a fresh take on this book. I read this book back in the sixth grade, and reading it as I am older really had a profound effect on me. This book truly stands the test of time and I believe that it always will.

What I Liked

First off I have to say that the story of Anne Frank and the holocaust as a whole is not an easy topic no matter how you look at it. But, these are both important stories that need to be shared. I read this book two times before writing this review, for a few reasons.

The firs being that this author did a wonderful job telling this story. It is done in such a way that it does not hide the truth, but gently explains what happened to Anne Frank and others who were victimized during WWII. It explained the steps leading up to the labor and concentration camps in a factual way, but in a very respectful manner. I have to say that this is one of the most gentle, but truthful children's book I have read on the topic personally.

The second reason I read this multiple times was the art style and illustrations that are present throughout. While I hate to say that this story is beautiful, because it is so heart breaking, this book is beautiful and is a work of art.

Another thing I loved about this book was that it just did not tell the story of Anne Frank, but it was so much more. It talked about the global economy and the rise of the Nazi to give the story context. There was also a lot of helpful information such as key character descriptions, timelines, and a glossary to aid young readers in learning and making sense of the complex story. But, the best thing they had in there was further reading. You can tell the author cares about the topic and is passionate about learning when they share where readers can learn more.

What I Didn’t Like

Honestly, there is nothing bad I can say about this book. It was well structured, it covered a difficult topic in a very accessible way to children.

Overall Thoughts

Overall I really enjoyed reading this, even though I am not a child I found it to be informative and interested without being overwhelming. This is a great way to expose young children the the holocaust and the story of Anne Frank without being overwhelming in my opinion. I even bought a copy for a friend of mine for her to read to her children.

3.5 stars

I honestly thought this was going to be a graphic novel adaptation of "Diary of a Young Girl", but "Little Guides to Great Lives: Anne Frank" is quite different than that. It's an illustrated biography of Anne Frank's life, explaining who she is, what she did and why her story is important.

In my opinion, I think it was interesting and good for younger readers. I thought it was going to be something else, but I was pleasantly surprised. The art was amazing and made the book a thousand times better. It's interactive and fun and I really liked the color scheme that was chosen, as well as the use of different patterns.

"Little Guides of Great Lives: Anne Frank" is part of a collection that showcases important people from our history. Frida Kahlo, Marie Curie and Nelson Mandela are examples of people who have been showcased in these little books before. Anne is definitely in great company!

In conclusion, I quite liked this little graphic novel, although it was different than I expected. I think it's good for younger readers to know more about Anne Frank and her history and I think they will definitely enjoy the art style.

This was a wonderful book, telling the story of Anne Frank in child friendly, accessible language with clear pictures to add to her story. It was pitched perfectly for primary school children, concluded with a timeline of key events in her life, and those that affected her life, and a glossary of some of the more technical words used. I would not hesitate to use this book with year 2 upwards as part of a topic and would happily add this to our school library.

My Thoughts
Anne Frank is one of those who makes frequent appearances on my blog. She was my inspiration for starting a journal of my own as a child, and I addressed my diary just like Anne did; only, I named my diary Katy (after another childhood favorite)

Anne Frank’s story is one that is difficult to tell and to read about; but yet one that is truly important and needs to be told and read.

This advanced picture book summarizes Anne’s story to the essentials, while being accurate, appropriate and interesting for the intended audience. Isabel Thomas’s rendition of Anne Frank’s story is simply beautiful.

Paola Escobar’s illustrations are simple yet eye-catching despite or because of the minimalistic color-scheme. They also add great value to the story by including details that provide more information to the reader.

I loved the timeline included at the end of the book; and also appreciated that the words included in the glossary are underlined in the book itself for easy reference.

In Summary
This book will be a great addition to libraries of young readers everywhere and I’m looking forward to reading more books from this series.

It will definitely inspire young readers to learn more about Anne and the events that led her to fulfilling her dream (though she did not live to know that she had achieved it)- in her own words below –

“I don’t want to have lived in vain like most people. I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I’ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death! And therefore I am grateful to God for this gift, this possibility of developing myself and of writing, of expressing all that is in me. I can shake off everything if I write; my sorrows disappear; my courage is reborn. But, and that is the great question, will I ever be able to write anything great, will I ever become a journalist or a writer?”

Charmingly illustrated filled with as many informations as possible. Young audience will understand very easily with glossary and timeline, I'd recommend this one to 7 years or older. Even though it's a short one, one will connect with Anne almost immediately thanks to the very detailed situation not only focused on Anne Frank's diary, but also background history.

This is a great illustrated book for young readers to learn about Anne Frank and World War II. I love that it has a glossary where the reader can learn more about terms discussed, and it encourages further readings such as Anne Frank's diary.

This is such a great short illustrated biography suitable for younger school kids, getting to know about Anne Frank. In terms of learning experience and as a teaching tool, I think it will work great, as it humanise WWII in addition to highlighting new/difficult words for young learners, with a glossary in the back. The illustrations themselves are also amazing.

This was such a cute little book! I was interested in looking at it to potentially use in my classes with my students and I think that is something I will definitely do. I'm going to have to tell our school librarian about this one for sure. It's always great to find resources about Anne Frank that makes it more realistic for the kids.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

The Diary of Anne Frank was one of my favorite books growing up, and so I was excited to read this book. I was concerned while reading the first page (the preface) because I felt like there was no information explaining the authors concepts which would be new to these readers.

I was pleasantly surprised by the content in the pages geared for young readers. While the book read fast and is crammed full of lots of details, the author did a great job bring Anne Frank’s story to life. Students will be a able to understand the challenges Anne went through; in fact, the illustrations were another way to bring understanding to this complex story. I enjoyed the illustrations, too.

Over all, I really like the books. The effort to share the story with a new generation in a more modern way is smart. And, I so appreciated the author leading the reader to read the real diary. Nicely done!!

A young girl who dreamt of being a writer and ultimately touched the world with her personal look into the atrocities of WWII... Anne Frank's words have touched the world for generations and now her story is being told in a new way. In this Little Guides to Great Lives book, Anne Frank's legacy is shared using a friendly, yet informative, picture book format.

As a parent, I've struggled with how to talk about the Holocaust with my kids. But this book made it so simple. The author was honest without sharing too much and wrote about the horrors of WWII in an age appropriate manner. Marketed to second to sixth grade, I came away from the book with new insight into Anne Frank's struggle for survival as well as further background information about Nazi Germany. This would make a great introduction to WWII for any elementary aged student. I'm happy to have found this series and this edition in particular.

„Little Guides to Great Lives: Anne Frank“ is an illustrated book about the life of Anne Frank during World War II.

The illustrations in this book are beautiful, I loved the style and the colors.
The language is simple and appropriate for children. There’s also a glossary with explanations for some of the more difficult words / expressions that kids might not know yet (e.g. Allied forces, D-Day landings,...). There’s no sugarcoating about the horrors of the war, which is something I’m glad about, but I’d be cautious about giving this book to kids that are very young.
A timeline at the end of the book sums up the most important events of Anne‘s life and the war.

This book is probably one of the best children’s books I’ve read lately and I highly recommend it.
Now I’m looking forward to reading more books from this series.

The Diary of Anne Frank is one of my all-time favorite books and this short illustrated book was a great introduction to the life of Anne Frank, her family and of the Second World War. The book is simple yet very informative. There is also a glossary at the end of the book which I thought is very helpful. The illustrations are captivating. My favorite would be the diagram of the secret annex. Anne Frank is one of the most important and inspiring figures in history and this book will definitely inspire a lot of younger children. I'll definitely buy a finished copy of this book to add on my Anne Frank book collection. This book will be out on April 23. *I received an earc from Lauence King Publishing via NetGalley. This did not affect my overall opinion of the book.

An easy to read biography for upper elementary level students. Thomas tells the story of Anne's life and death in simple language. The illustrations offer a stylized window into her world.
The timeline and glossary at the end share further information at an appropriate level also.
This book brings out how young Anne was. Thomas shares the human interactions and the difficulties involved in hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam.
