Late review, from memory. Interesting graphic novel with a cool premise and nice art. Elida is a great character and I would probably read further volumes in the series,

This book was SO FUN. I'm really pleased that they're making a TV show out of it because that means more people will hear about it, and this book deserves that exposure. This is the campy scifi nerdery you've been craving.

I was so excited to read this graphic novel. About Princess Elisa who is on the run through space after her mother was taken and her monarchy was overthrown. But, I found it to be very hard to follow. Instead of starting with any backstory it just jumped right in. Through the story it would do flashbacks to give you insight in to the backstory. I found it confusing and not all that enjoyable to read.

Thanks to Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

An enjoyable space romp that examines royal expectations, gender roles, and the impact of revolutions. A little of the art left me wanting some clarity (along with a bit of the flashback interweaving). That said, I do hope there's more coming!

You can name a lot of things that went on with this series. Grifter trying to make a living while dealing with some scummy opportunists. But twist, the grifter turns out to be a queen, not even trying to get back her throne. She just wants to make a living without hurting anybody while maybe getting her mom back. Even though her mom helped establish a reign where her daughter is just a figurehead for an aristocracy. One that refused to even try and help those less fortunate in need which drove a revolution for equal rights. Then there are people trying to get back to their families like the Vagrant Queen's companion, who will do anything to get back to his wife. As for some opportunists, what separates them from the Queen is how they try to take things for themselves to try and erase their past. Not for wanting power but because nobody gave him the chance to see past his old status. Characters with relatable flaws are really hard to come by in comics since you have to fit so much into six issues. But when they appear, you can't help but get ingrained into everything especially if some people can find the artwork in this series to be out of place to the series.

I don’t have words. I loved everything about this graphic novel. The illustrations, the world-building, the political upheavals, the characters- EVERYTHING.
This story had action, heart, drama, and humour.. it was perfect. I loved every second I spent reading this.
5 stars.
I hope they continue with the series.

Echoes of firefly with the downtrodden protagonist and snarking. I have a snark limit. I liked the nods to old pulpy science fiction stories with the crazed general. Nice to read the lead does not want to reinstate the monarchy.

It’s official. Vault Comics are my most favorite wonderful comic creators ever. I believe this debut comic, which is about an exiled Princess running away from her kingdom while being hunted by a power-hungry admiral named Lazaro, is at a whopping 169 pages. 169. You got it. 169.

This comic was written Magdalene Visaggio she did an amazing job with the dialogue. Amazing. Many times I found myself smirking, laughing, and grinning from ear to ear. This def has an Orville vibe to this. Full of humor, a lot of classic elements of sci-fi that I identified, and there was elements of Farscape as well in it. But there’s apparently a new TV show being made by Syfy based on this comic. I’ll put the link down below.

Read this comic for Stelling. He’s the opinionated rogue that makes this world look like he’s having fun all the time! If I were to summarise this comic: It’s about a two good nothing admiral that killed his own father, kidnapped the exiled royal princess Elida and her backstabbing friend who resembles Jack Sparrow in personality for a small kidney stone that gave Eldia’s family the ability to be worshipped as Gods through mind control.

That doesn’t sound awesome to you? It gets better. The admiral’s a crazed queen hunter, who wants the mind controlling necklace in an ancient monastery. Does this bring flashbacks of Star Trek Discovery Season 2/3? And Stelling is the root cause of all this chaos. There are themes that are similar to the French revolution. The world building, the art, the drawings, everything about this is awesome. It’s got kickass robots in space, epic worldbuilding. Everything is good. Some weaknesses I found was that I think the Admiral should have had more scenes developing his lonely side, and I wanted more difficulty for the admiral as he plots his course to become a power crazy God. Otherwise awesome.

I was unable to read this graphic novel before it was archived, therefore I will not be reviewing it even though I was excited for it.

Vagrant Queen is just a good, fun space opera that I will definitely purchase for my library's YA collection.

A very nice Space Opera with a very nice art!
Caught my attention and kept it until the very end, even with a bit of confusion here and there, that I'm sure in the next volumes I'll understand!
Charismatic characters, nice plot and well... Space!
Couldn't not like it right?

I love a lot of things about this! The retro vibe is uber cool. Elida is one tough royal who can beat anybody's ass. There are no romantic angles. The back stories were very intriguing. And it's a super fun space romp that left me begging for more.

Highly Recommended!

I originally wanted to read this series for a few reasons. One; I loved the cover and art style. Two; I adore space opera, and can’t get enough of it. Especially when it comes in graphic novel form. And three; I really liked the concept of this series.
On the whole I’m pretty happy with what I read here. It’s one of the more solid space opera graphic novels out there, which I feel like is saying something. It was fast-paced and a ton of fun to read. Though I’m anxious to see how much more of the story there will be.
I think anybody that likes the typical themes found in space operas would enjoy this one as well. There are rogues, double crosses, an exiled queen, and so much more to be found here. Plus some fun fight scenes and the like. In short, it was exactly what I was looking for.
I enjoyed the exiled queen plot quite a lot, actually. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about it at first, but it really grew on me. Now I’m just anxious for more.

This is probably around 3.5 stars for me. Generally enjoyable story with a good space opera feel to it, though I think the concept was stronger than the execution. I found Isaac to be a fairly unlikable character, which may have been somewhat intentional, but still affected how I felt about the book as a whole. It's nothing mind-blowingly original but is fun enough to be worth a read.

This was a fun space opera, full of rogues and double crosses. It reminds me of something that would have appeared in Heavy Metal back in the day. It's the story of a exiled queen of a galactic empire on the run. She was queen as a child when the people overthrew the government. The whole setup and art reminds me of an indie comic from the 80's. It was great fun.

Fantastic graphic novel! Loved Vagrant Queen Volume 1, can't wait to read the rest of them! The line work and colors are fantastic and really pop on a digital display.

The daughter of the ruling family of the old regime, on the run from the new, in space: as premises go, it's not all that original, least of all in the purported twist that she doesn't particularly want to go back to the way things used to be. But the appeal here is in her sparring, screwball relationship with her roguish and not remotely trustworthy sidekick; at its peaks, Magdelene Visaggio's snarky script and Jason Smith's elastic expressiveness combine to recall the feel of Kyle Baker at his unrestrained best. And in an age of fashionable revolutionary rhetoric, it's always nice to see a story coming from a left perspective which remembers how the vast majority of revolutions work out in practice.

I thought the concept of the story was quite interesting, but I just couldn't really get into it. The art style wasn't really my taste and sometimes the lettering was too small for me to read. Also, I felt like I had missed a sort of prologue to this story, that even the flashbacks didn't really explain to me...

Vagrant Queen Vol 1. - Vissaggio Smith and Saxon Saam - 3.5
An interesting space opera. The Queen is on the run. Her planet and people taken over by revolutionaries. She wants her people to be free, but she also wants to live and free. But the two can not happen if others keep stabbing her in the back. Overall an interesting graphic novel. I liked the art work better than the story line.
