One-Stitch Baby Knits is a beginner tutorial and pattern guide for knitting baby projects with garter stitch by Val Pierce. Due out 10th June 2019 from Fox Chapel, it's 144 pages and available in paperback format.

Knitting is a valuable skill and hobby. It's portable, versatile, relatively inexpensive to start with, quiet and fun. A lot of people take up knitting when they're expecting or have a friend/family member who's expecting. Baby items are quick to knit and require little in the way of materials. There is, however, a dearth of appealing beginner accessible baby items.

This book has 22 patterns in garter stitch. (The earlier cover states 25 patterns, but the e-ARC I was sent contains 22 and the new cover reflects the correct number). There is an array of patterns including baby 'staples' such as hats, booties, bibs, and blankets. They are arranged into beginner, intermediate, and experienced levels, but none of the patterns would be frustrating for a keen beginner, especially if they have access to a local knitting shop or experienced knitting friend or relative. The author also includes a number of projects which use 3 dimensional surface techniques to make dolls and pictures which are part of the project, like a snuggle blanket with a 3D duck head on it and a really cute cow hat/mitten set. A fair number of the projects incorporate embroidered details as well.

This is a beginner accessible book and roughly 20% of the page content is used in the introduction and how-to-knit section. The yarns used are widely accessible and easily sourced. There will be an included index and the table of contents includes a useful pictorial gallery in color with page numbers.

Three stars, higher for folks who really love garter stitch and don't mind embroidered details on knits.

I received a free copy from Netgalley for an honest review.

These patterns are great for a quick project or gift. I still wish knitting books would include something for lefties, (even an annotation or tips) as the pattern changes a little; but that’s because I have to rewrite so many to get them to work. If you want a challenge, these also make great base patterns if you want to take a small step and try another simple stitch.

A very nice, simple book for knitting baby items.
Lots of variety and modern projects.
Full instructions, and lots of photos.
The projects seem to be easy to moderate.

This is such a cute book! It's great for beginners (like me) as it covers all the beginner-y things you need before throwing you in to patterns that make 0 sense - the intro goes through needles, stitches, accessories you might find helpful and tips incase you bork the whole thing up anyway (also me)

The patterns are organised by level of difficulty and get progressively more advanced as you get to the end. Each pattern is laid out very neatly and is easy to follow, with lots of pictures so you can compare and make sure you're on the right track! Also, no dud patterns.. IMO lots of craft books have a few great ideas and then fluff out the book with rubbish nobody would want, but I think all of the patterns in here are extremely cute and would make lovely presents :) my favs are the Sleepy Cow set of hat and mittens and the Teddy Bear romper.

If you are looking for a cute baby knitting book or want to learn to knit and don't know where to start I think this would be a nice book to go with.

This is a nice collection of baby knit patterns. They are intended as "beginner" level patterns, but I would rate them as more "advanced beginner" or even "intermediate" level patterns. There are also quite a few small buttons on these garments, which - as an overprotective American - make me wonder if they're a choking hazard around infants and very small children.

Nevertheless, this is a good basic baby knit pattern book. The basic instructions at the beginning of the book are particularly good and recommended for new knitters.

This is by a British knitting expert, and I appreciate that she took the trouble to translate some of the British knitting terms into American English. However, many of the yarns listed are those available in Britain; I only recognized one yarn readily available in the U.S.

I'll rate this book 5 for Brits, 3 for Americans, splitting the difference with an overall 4.

One-Stitch Baby Knits
by Val Pierce

As a knitter, I found this book to be a perfect starter book for someone to learn from. You’ll learn about yarns and what to use for different projects. The two main stitches, knit and purl is taught and which you will use to complete the projects in this book. Directions are clear and concise and you will complete a project in no time at all.

I recommend this book for a new knitter who wants to learn knitting while completing a real project at the same time. As an experienced knitter I am enjoying working on the adorable cow baby hat!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a great book, fabulous for someone starting out in knitting, or someone who just wants make something quick and easy. There is only one stitch to worry about and each project works on building up ability on the basis of using "knit" stitch throughout. There are easy as well as more difficult baby knits to make, all very cute and all would make lovely handmade gift to any baby.

This book contains patterns for beginners that are for infants and newborns. All of the patterns use a simple garter stitch. It has clear photos of the finished projects. It contains easy to follow information about the different stitches used, and it has pictures and diagrams to illustrate how to complete the stitches. I think the patterns are very cute, and they are for both boys and girls.

What a great book. I would describe myself as an experienced knitter who has tackled some very complicated patterns in the past but it is the simplicity of these knits that appeal to me.

The book has very clear explanations of the art of knitting to begin with before splitting the patterns into simple, intermediate and more challenging groups. Granted there are a couple of things I wouldn't attempt; knitted bibs and burp cloths seem a bit yuk to me! However there are definitely far more that I will, make especially some of the little shoes. I will also use it to help my granddaughter learn how to knit as she could almost immediately make some of the basic items.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn to knit or likes cute baby patterns which are a little different.

This would be a great book for a newer knitter. Patterns are knit in garter stitch with minimal shaping making most of the projects simple enough to be made by a beginner, though some would present a bit more challenge and an opportunity to learn new techniques. The variety of projects will suit any knitter looking for a simple, handmade gift for a tiny loved one.

Thank you to Fox Chapel Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book n exchange for my honest review.

Full of interesting patterns, this is a great book especially for those who are interested in learning to knit. The instructions are very easy to follow and includes how to cast on and off, increasing and decreasing, picking up stitches, working with two or more colours and plenty of other useful information. What i especially find useful, is the needle size conversion chart and the yarn weight conversions. Although i am an experienced knitter, there are some wonderful projects in this book that i will make sooner or later. It is nice to sometimes knit simple items.
My favourite is the Kimono Wrap Set. The pictures are very clear. Recommended.

My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review.
