If you love embroidery and gardening, this is the book for you. A lot of the patterns are simple, or could be simplified for a beginner, and have a variety of applications. I wasn't too crazy about some of the projects in the book, like head bands large enough to be distracting, but the images themselves could still be applied to a different project. My favourite was some adorable acorns and some little nemo clownfish, but nearly every image I found interesting enough to find an application for. There aren't a lot of original, or quirky images to choose from, like some other modern embroidery books. Instead, the focus is placed on stylized, classic images that would fit in on a blanket, tablecloth or headband and not look out of place. This gives them a bit of an old fashioned, but also timeless look which I really liked. Old and young embroiderers can get something out of this, I think.

"Embroidered Botanicals" is a modern take on traditional embroidery techniques. The photography takes a lifestyle appeal approach. The images are a visual feast. The author describes her goal as using the patterns to showcase the threads. She succeeded. The craftsmanship is exquisite. For stitchers who want to elevate their skillset, this book will prove to be an inspiration.

This elegant book delivers on all fronts! So often craft books can come across simply as instructional and technical. However, "Embroidered Botanicals", takes the craft book to the next level. I was struck by the literary quality of the writing and the author’s use of wording to connect her theme of “thread” throughout the work. The first half of the book spills open with stunning photographs of the projects contained within, and everything is arranged with aesthetic consideration similar to that of an art book. Following the photographs of projects, the reader will find introductions to thread and material types, charts, and step-by-step guides of stitches and basic techniques. This was a pleasant surprise as up to that point I had assumed this was not a beginner’s book. Perhaps the best part was discovering that yes, indeed, this book can be used by novices and experienced artisans alike. It is all here, helpful instruction and glorious inspiration.

This book is truly sublime from start to finish. Botanical embroidery is not a new technique but this book does bring an incredibly new approach to botanical embroidery by exploring a range of threads (tapestry wool thread, vrewel wool thread, cotton floss, metallic thread and pearl cotton thread) as well as the different effects each thread can provide. The photography of the embroidery itself, the techniques, the final items and the tools is flawless throughout by being incredibly clear, well presented and well composed. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. It is clear that the author is incredibly talented and inspirational throughout the entire book. I can't wait to start making! I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a textiles, art, craft and/or sewing interest.

Yumiko Higuchi's embroidery books are so beautiful that I'm always excited to see a new one! Embroidered Botanicals is another winner. The sample images are gorgeous, and the patterns are simple and easy to understand. I wanted to start working on every single one! I"ll definitely buy this for my personal collection AND for my library's collection.

The designs in this book are nice like the old fashioned samplers girls use to make to show their needle skills. The designer here struggles to do something practical and useful with her designs. The model is a beautiful delicate 12 year old who my have worn these adorments in the 1820’s but not in the 2020’s.
