Short story that sets the stage of the series as Callie Hutton’s exceptional writing style draws you into her Scottish back drop. Worth the read,

This is a well-written historical romance. I’ve been a longtime reader of Callie’s work. I enjoyed His Rebellious Lass, which makes sense. All her romances are always worth the read.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

There are many times in this book where the "hero" is hard to like. Donald, The Marquess of Campbell (Cam) is arrogant, quick to draw conclusions, and quickly changing his mind, but usually only to the "heroine", Bridget MacDuff. She is strong woman who is not willing to take what he is handing out. We can excuse him a little due to his abusive childhood and the fact that he is suddenly saddled with a ward who would rather be anywhere else. Bridget wants her inheritance so she can purchase a house for women who are abused by their significant others, a truly noble endeavor. Unfortunately, for her, she will only get it unless she marries or turns 23, two years from now. Even though, it seems Cam is constantly chastising her, they develop an attraction for each other, which both are going to fight tooth and nail. And yes, there are villains, one particularly nasty one. Just what role will he play in bringing them together? I do enjoy Callie Hutton's books, but I must admit this one is not one of my favorites. The storyline is good, but the hero is just a little too overboard, but still it is a decent read.

I’ve read one of Hutton’s novels before, so I expected
to enjoy this one just as much, but I unfortunately didn’t. I didn’t enjoy the characters at all and the hate-to-love trope just wasn’t well done. Not much more to say.

When the Marquess of Campbell inherits a fiery, red-headed Scottish beauty as his ward, it’s his job to marry her off. No problem. She comes with a fortune. Lady Bridget MacDuff will have suitors falling all over themselves to wed her. Not so fast. Lady Bridget has plans for that fortune and they involve helping unfortunate women. And she has no intention of helping her devastatingly handsome guardian in his quest to get her off his hands. He doesn’t plan to marry, either. Why should she? Bridget and Cam are now on opposite sides of a war that neither one plans to lose. Even if Cam’s rakish presence throws Bridget’s heart into turmoil and the marquess can’t deny that his ward sets his heart afire. And then Cam makes a bold proposal...
I’m not sure if it’s just that I’ve read too many ward/guardian books or that I don’t really much care for the hate to love books but this book really just didn’t work for me. I really didn’t care for the main characters’ interaction with each other. DNF

Sometimes, a book just really has too much plot - this tends to go with a lack of characterization - which is true of His Rebellious Lass. When this happens, the book tends to be a series of events and it never grabs hold of my attention.

Here is the honest truth: I could tell you the plot of the book, but I could not tell you much about the characters at all. Cam doesn’t want to marry because he was abused as a child by his father and doesn’t want to do the same to his future child and because he wants revenge against his dead father. Bridget doesn’t want to marry because she doesn’t want to be controlled by a man, especially after her best friend was killed by her husband from a variety of injuries. All of this is valid, but there’s never any time spent with these issues. They are repeated a few times, but you never get a good look at the characters having these thoughts and feelings.

The book moves from location to location, from plot point to plot point, but all I know about these characters is listed above and that they think each other hot. Even as they are claiming that they love each other, there’s no depth to it, there’s no sense that they could ever make it as a couple beyond the end of the book because they don’t really work as a couple within the book.

So much of the book revolves around Bridget wanting to open a shelter for abused women, but it feels more like set dressing. Bridget and Cam argue over whether she should start this shelter, they visit locations, they are given an abandoned child (Cam’s sister quickly takes the child), but there’s no real emotion to get you invested.

And then there’s Cam, who is mostly fine until they have sex. All of their kisses up to that point are awkward in that as each one ends, he says that he won’t apologize for the kiss, but that they can never marry. It’s only when she is threatened with ruin that they do sleep together. Similarly, they only marry because she is ruined. But in the midst of having sex, Cam literally thinks “but where’s her barrier? She’s not a virgin!” Ignoring that Cam has a really bad understanding of vaginas, why does a notorious rake care? And why, immediately after sex, does he ask her who she lost her virginity to? It’s a whole thing that’s exhausting and then Cam gets a lesson from a doctor on the truth about hymens. So, yeah, there’s weak grovelling over not understanding hymens.

Consider this fact: this is a ward-guardian romance, and I have no complaints about that because it’s all just sniping about how he wants to marry her off and she doesn’t want to marry. I literally did not care about the power dynamics of this book at all because everything else kept me busy trying to keep up.

Content warnings: domestic abuse in the past, child abuse in the past, abduction, slutshaming, attempted sexual assault, child abandonment

Loved the cover.
The book was good but it could have been better. I wanted faster speed and more action and romance.
I did not get that.

Lady Bridget cannot believe that her father has made her the ward of the Marquess of Campbell. To make matters worse, the young Marquess "Cam", just wants to marry her off as quickly as possible. Bridget has other plans for her life. In under two years, she will reach her majority and can access her fortune. Then, she will start building a shelter for abused women.

Cam has no time for a ward, and certainly not one as attractive as Bridget. Marrying her off should be no problem, but unfortunately, Bridget resists at every turn. When he discovers Bridget's plans for a women's refuge, he wants to help. They make a bargain that Bridget will at least try to make a match and he will help her with her endeavor. Working with Bridget only brings them closer together. It doesn't take long for Cam to start thinking maybe he needs to change his mind about taking a wife, and Bridget may just be the lass for the job.

Author Callie Hutton is newer-to-me, but I am quickly growing to love her writing style and voice. Her romances are refreshing. The love/hate relationship between hero and heroine is the highlight of the story in HIS REBELLIOUS LASS. Bridget and Graham are both strong and stubborn, so they clash right off the bat. Neither is willing to give in and fights for what they want tooth and nail. This is why compromise is so important, and thank the gods they do, or else they wouldn't have been able to reach their HEA. Historical romance readers won't want to miss HIS REBELLIOUS LASS.

BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY>>>>>>> If you like heated romances with sex...
If not....maybe not a good choice for you.
For myself... It was a very engaging, passionate read. One that goes up and down and as each page turns you either want to smack the heroine or hug her and give her advice. I love this author, while I readily admit this read was a little beyond my love scope as for the graphic content, I love the writing, the way the story unfolds and the characters within. It is a good read for those that love romance with life, passion and sex. It is a wonderful read for those that like stories that are told that are vivid. I was given this ARC. In return all opinions expressed here are voluntary and my own. So if you want a hot passionate read... feel free to read this one. The author will not disappoint. Regards, Anna

I found this story to be very repetitive and slow. The main characters are attracted to one another but I could not feel it. There was no heat in this book. I did not like either MC. Bridgette was immature and boring, Cam was domineering and cold. The ending was wrapped up so quickly that my head was spinning. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

Lady Bridget has plans for her life there's just one problem, even though she’s 21, her father made her the ward of the Marquess of Campbell, so she can’t access her fortune until she’s 23. She has plans for her money and is adamant she will not marry and be under the control of a husband.

Cam was not expecting to become guardian to anyone least of all to a feisty, whisky drinking woman. His solution is to marry her off as quickly as possible, particularly since he finds himself attracted to her, and after his experiences, marriage is the last thing he wants for himself.

Bridget has plans for her fortune, open a home for abused women so that she can help them in a way she couldn't help her friend, a woman killed by her husband who got away with it. She wants a safe haven for women and children in a world where they are considered property.

This book had an awful lot going on, too much really to build a cohesive, enjoyable story. Even though it was full of action and drama, I actually forgot I read this book. I had started rereading it before parts of it jogged my memory. This book isn't worth the time.

I received an arc of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This author is one of my favorite writers, and this book is another reason why. His Rebellious Lass is exciting and interesting and there is never a dull moment. Cam surely has his hands full and soon his heart will be as well. Lady Bridget’s antics will have you laughing along with her as she intends not to wed. I received an ARC copy and I am voluntarily leaving a review because I truly love the book.

his rebellious lass finds lord duncan campbell saddled with a beautiful, recalcitrant ward. one that intrigues him and who he is desperate to marry off. lest she tempt him to break his vow to never have children of his own.

which like, dude, marriage doesn't actually mean pregnancy, but i get it, it's the regency era and that's where reproductive health is at. anyway, the reason he doesn't want to have kids is because his dad was a giant jerk and he doesn't want to turn into one. or something? like this kind of logic always boggles my mind because dude, there's a thing that's called free will and jerkiness isn't actually genetic. you could choose to be a jerk or not a jerk to your kids.

he decides to be a jerk to his ward, but like i said she's sassy and holds her own even when he's being ridiculous and irrational. and she has plans and is supposed to be all independent, but then it turns out that she needs the love of a good man to help her execute these plans because she is not very good at math and has no understanding of real estate law. like i barely understand real estate law so i'm not knocking her for that, but like it you have a plan then maybe you should have researched the plan instead of just dreaming it.

anyway this is one of those regencies where all the right tropes are there and the writing is good and i enjoyed reading it, but when i start to think about it things go off the rails for me. so like don't give this a deep read, and you should be fine.

Oh what a fun book this was. I so enjoy watching two people who have sworn to never marry fall head over heels in love.
Donald, the Marquess of Campbell, Cam to his family and friends was raised by a tyrant of a father. Cam swore he would be the end of the Campbell line. He feared he had tainted blood and would treat his children the same as his father.
Lady Bridget MacDuff loved her father with all her heart. Upon his death Bridget was told she was to be a ward to the Marquess of Campbell. Heart broken because her father was dictating her future from the grave. She has plans for her future and the money she will get on her 23rd birthday. She has no intention of marriage, she will not be controlled and mistreated by a husband.
Bridget has no problem telling Cam what she thinks and what she has planned and why she will never marry. Cam needs to get Bridget married off before he loses all sense and kisses the intriguing and beautiful girl. The more time they spend in each other’s company the more they learn all is not as it seems and maybe trust and compromising can lead to a chance of a lifetime.
Bridget soon realizes that love can be freeing but it also can bring heartbreak if the one you love doesn’t love you as well. If Cam doesn’t do something and do it fast he will lose the one thing that has brought joy and light to his life.
You can not go wrong with one of Callie Hutton’s books!

This is a fascinating historical romance, complete with an unexpected twist at the end! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending it.

Twenty one-year old Lady Bridget MacDuff is shocked to discover that her father has placed her in the guardianship of the Marquess of Campbell, someone neither of them have ever met and the news is a shock to both of them. Lady Bridget has plans of her own that don't include a guardian, suitors or a husband but she needs access to the fortune her father has left her to achieve her goals and she can't do that until either she marries or is twenty-three years old. He assumes he'll have no problems marrying her off as she's beautiful and comes with a fortune, someone who will definitely appeal to the ton! However, he hasn't expected her to be quite such a contrary and determined young lady. With their different goals, compromise is going to be essential but can they resist their mutual attraction and still achieve their dreams?

This is a fun read as the feisty, red-headed Scottish young lady is so stubborn and determined to succeed that she's definitely a challenge for her guardian. She doesn't always agree to behave in what is the expected manner, including when riding or shooting. The reasons behind her quest are heartbreaking and the intrigue which develops is enthralling. This is a great read with well developed, strong characters, secrets to discover and plots to be made - if you enjoy this genre, this has to be one of the best to keep you turning the pages, including an insight into the expectations and treatment of women in this era as well as being a heartwarming romance - I have to say that I loved that letter at the end! Even better news for readers is that this is the first book in a new series, Scottish Hearts - I can't wait to read more

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.

His Rebellious Lass has a solid start–Bridget and Cam clash from the start as he wants his unexpected ward married right away, and marriage to anyone is the last thing she wants. Once they each understand what the other wants (she wants to open a home for women affected by domestic violence, he wants to go back to his comfortable, non-ward life where he can live his never-getting-married life in peace) they reach a compromise: she’ll go along with his attempts to find her a husband, and he’ll assist her with starting her shelter. Right away, Bridget goes out of her way to make herself appear as unmarriageable as possible, and the tactics she uses are at time laugh-out-loud funny. (Her outfit at their first outing, OMG)

Somewhere around the halfway mark, though, the story starts to veer a bit off the rails. Bridget and Cam are of course starting to feel drawn to each other–to be expected, because we all knew from the first sentence of the blurb this was going, right?–but the exploration of their initial attraction feels more clunky than natural. (I feel sparks! Oh no! Oh, wait, no sparks this time–phew. I’m good. I refuse to be attracted to him/her! I have a plan. Oh, dear–were those sparks again???) Then there’s the fact that even though Bridget’s one life goal since her friend died a battered woman has been to start a shelter, she has essentially made zero plans for it beyond “buy a house, help women, move to the country once said house is operating smoothly.” She doesn’t even understand budgeting, we find out later…? (We never do find out how on earth they’re going to keep the home–which every woman in the part of town they’re looking at buildings in seem to know to future purpose of–is going to be kept a secret from all of the men the women there are supposed to be protected from.) At one point Cam and Bridget are given a baby for its own protection–they give it to the nursemaid in Cam’s sister’s nursery, and from that point on she gets mentioned…maybe twice?

Then there’s a kidnapping! A scandal! A rushed marriage! A absolutely unbelievable big misunderstanding that made me want to smack Cam upside the head (I’m sorry, a much more grovelly grovel was in order for that than what Bridget actually gets)…and eventually, an HEA–but by that time I was feeling more than a little whiplash-ish. Maybe if Ms. Hutton had attempted a bit less here I would have enjoyed it more?

His Rebellious Lass is the first book in a new series, though I did get the impression that it might be loosely connected to earlier books (Cam’s friends’ stories, maybe?) This one isn’t ever going to be my favorite book from this author, but I am interested in seeing where else she will go with this series.

His Rebellious Lass by Callie Hutton is the First book in the Scottish Hearts Series. This is the story of Bridget MacDuff and Donald 'Cam', the Marquess of Campbell.
Cam has inherited a Ward that is old enough to marry so that is what his plan is to do. When her having a great inheritance it should be a problem. So when he goes to put forth such thoughts to her it doesn't go so easy. Cam has sworn off marrying after living under his father's abuse. Bridget to has seen the problem of abuse too, so she has no plans to marry either and goes forward to make flops of his wishes. Bridget wants to use her money for good with helping helpless women/children have a place to stay. They finally make an agreement but what neither planned on was their feelings to grow toward each other so much.
Loved their story.

This book is so much fun. One of the best I've read in a while. The characters have so much depth and complexity, they hold your attention the entire book. I literally stayed up all night to read this book. I couldn't put it down. Cam and Bridget are hilarious together at times. Cam is always there for Bridget and it makes for a beautiful story. I might add, the epilogue is the perfect ending. 💜💜💜💜💜

Lady Bridget MacDuff has become the ward of Donald, Marquess of Campbell (Cam). Cam set out to marry off his Scottish ward as quickly as possible, but he and Bridget are on opposite sides in this war. Bridget has her own plans for her future and they don’t include a husband. Cam and Bridget has an instant sexual attraction, neither wants to admit it. Cam has no plans to marry, but his ward is everything he doesn’t know he needs. I love the battle of wills with these two strongly independent characters, their witty banter and sexual tensions all make this a great story. I voluntarily read and reviewed this excellent book.
