Hunting Evil
By Chris Carter

5 stars

A gripping thriller that will leave you on the edge of you seat.

Fast paced story line that is full of action, along with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged from the first to the last page.

As roommates, they met for the first time in college. Two of the brightest minds ever to graduate from Stamford Psychology University. As adversaries, they met again in Quantico, Virginia. Robert Hunter had become the head of the LAPD’s Ultra Violent Crimes Unit. Lucien Folter had become the most prolific and dangerous serial killer the FBI had ever encountered.

Now, after spending three and a half years locked in solitary confinement, Lucien has finally managed to break free. And he’s angry.

This book is another typical Chris Carter books.
I loved it.
What else can I say.
An addictive and thrilling physiological thriller to have you on the edge of your seat and not wanting to put the book down.
The 10th book in the Hunter series, and it doesn't seem to be wanning in how Chris Carter grips you and drags you into the story. Another thrilling book, with an amazing ending. Can hardly wait for number 11.

These books are very addictive. The suspense was brilliant and chris's writing just flows so it makes for easy reading.

🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪 out of 5
Chris Carter has done it once again- made me think in fact that instead of having a background in criminal psychology he is himself a psychopathic serial killer because WOW. This book was long awaited if you are a fan of the Robert Hunter series as it featured a previous villain (THE villain) who has escaped prison. This book was everything I wanted and MORE.
.
Lucien Folter is the ultimate big bad with hundreds of kills under his belt. He is a serial killer with a degree in criminal psychology and he kills in the name of “research” to know what it’s like- he has tried everything and has no patterns it’s all about experimentation (how am I even going to sleep tonight?). So when he escapes prison it’s all hands on deck to find him and especially Detective Robert Hunter- his college friend and one wickedly smart detective.
.
With a lot of the book from the serial killer’s POV it was almost scary seeing into it and seeing what was there. I’ve never read someone so able to capture the mind of serial killer before and it both scared and intrigued me in equal parts. Every chapter (and there were a lot of them) ends on a cliff hanger that keeps you flying by the seat of your pants. CC is a master in his genre and I bow down to his mastery.

Buttefly effect crossed with sliding doors tihis is certainly a book that will promote discussion in a book club!
Although a slightly juveinile writing style that kept me one step removed from the victom the story is compelling and you find yourself reading "one more chapter" to see what will happen.

Fight or Flight - something we have all considered in the "what if it happened to me" scenario. I am sure we have all thought about how we would react so it is interesting to see how the narrator portrays both options.

The main character, Gem , is carjacked.. What happens after the carjacking is determined by how she responds to the attack. Athrilling read and one I highly recommend for anyone who loves a "what if" story!

I would like to thank NetGalley for advanced copy received in exchange for a candid review - look out for the book on 6 August!

I have inadvertently come and gone from this series featuring Detective Robert Hunter from LAPD's Ultra Violent Crimes Unit. (And yes, each time I have a giggle at the 'ultra' and try to remember to add the 'n' in violent.)

I've enjoyed the books I've read and am pretty consistent now but - as it would happen - this is actually a sequel to an earlier book in the series and even the author Chris Carter recommends we read its precursor.

However... #spoileralert: I hadn't read it and survived.

It might have helped to read the earlier book in the series to get more context on Hunter's relationship with Lucien but I really didn't struggle at all. I took it on good faith that Lucien had - for many years - been a good friend to the younger Hunter and that it'd been quite shocking for the unshockable detective when his old Uni roommate had become a psychopathic serial killer.

Though, we're kinda told there's less of the psychopathic element involved as what Lucien WAS doing (before he was caught) and what he continues to do now he's escaped. It's research, he explains. I'd joke that you can't blame a bloke for his curiosity but sadly Lucien's a surprisingly unsympathetic killer, particularly when he seemingly kills outside of the parameters of his experiment.

I would have actually respected him more (as a criminal that is) if he'd let some of his car-jacking victims go here. They were kinda inconsequential to him and it would have sat better with his genius-ness if he'd made sure he was safe and then released them. But he doesn't. Early on Hunter tells us it's just to show us what his nemesis is capable of. And I guess that's probably it. Well, that and expediency.

Having said that though, we're privy to Lucien's thoughts and feelings after he kills a significant number of people in a more-distant method than usual and he comments on it feeling too detached to give him any satisfaction.

Anyhoo... Hunter and his partner Garcia (who very much appealed in the last book of this series, Gallery of the Dead) are forced into the mix with the FBI and US Marshalls on the hunt for Lucien. But for Lucien it's all about Hunter and mind games.

In the last novel we got a sense that romance might be in the air for Hunter and things start off well here, but Lucien certainly interrupts his old roommate's chance of happiness.

As an aside, to give some context to Hunter attending University at a young age Carter provides a fairly lengthy backstory I hadn't been aware of in relation to his upbringing, and I very much enjoyed that insight as my (initial) chequered history with this series meant I wasn't entirely aware of the why / how of Hunter's intellectual prowess.

I enjoyed this latest book from Carter and am continuing to enjoy this under-appreciated series. At some point I swear I will go back and read those I've missed.

Another highly anticipated book in this series! I was very excited to read it. Robert Hunter is back. This follows the last book where Lucien had just escaped. Lucien is a master of disguise and considers himself a student of murder. Previously he had compiled an encyclopaedia of murder. Now he is back to complete his work, while handing out some revenge! Be warned these books are very graphic in their descriptions of murder. This one does not disappoint. A very twisty story but with an opportunity to continue! I am already looking forward to the next installment!!

Chris Carter is my number 1 favourite author so when I received an advanced copy the excitement was Real. The latest Robert Hunter book did not disappoint even for a second. It had me flipping page after page to find out what is going to happen and what Lucien’s next move would be and how Hunter and Garcia would overcome him. There was emotion, gore, suspense, character building everything you need for the best thriller novel. If you haven’t Read Chris Carter and the adventures of Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia I urge you to go check it out and like me you will not be disappointed.

As per my good reads review

Having never read any of Chris Carter's books, this was a very nice surprise. Maybe "nice" is not the best word to use.

The topic of serial killers may be a bit off-putting to some. But Carter created tension, foreboding and menace without the graphic gore. I couldn’t put the book down – I wanted to find out what the killer, Lucien, had in store for the main character, Hunter. Who won this round?

It did take me a little while to get used to the writing style of long sentences separated by commas. But I could see it improved the flow from Lucien and Hunter’s thoughts.

There was a suggestion to read the prequel to gain an insight into Lucien and Hunter’s previous battle. But that didn’t detract from the understanding of the characters.

Overall a great read from a new author for me.
(There was a grammar mistake on page 415 - "Safe a few minor adjustment", should this be "Save for a few minor adjustments?)

I was thrilled to be approved to read this advance copy of Hunting Evil as I am a huge Chris Carter fan, I couldn't wait to get stuck in!

It didn't disappoint. All I can say is Wow, how does Chris come up with these ideas, what an imagination!

In this installment of the series Robert and Carlos are hunting the very evil Lucien who has escaped from a maximum security prison and is now running rampage across the country.

This book had my attention from the first page and didn't let me go until the very last word. I was totally sucked in and couldn't stop reading, I absolutely loved it. I love a good serial killer book and this gave me what I wanted in spades. It was horrific in parts, it made me hold my breath, it made me sad, it made me angry. The whole whirlwind of emotions that I got when reading this showed me what a great book it actually was. So many parts of the book got an emotional reaction out of me. It was punchy and hard hitting. Just when I had recovered from one shocking event the next one hit, and so it went on. I literally couldn't tear myself away from this book. I think I must be a secret psychopath or a wannabe detective!

When I read a series of books and it gets up to number 10 or so I start to think that maybe the author is going to run out of ideas and the series will get stale, but not in this case, it was explosive and fresh and there is definitely plenty more mileage in this series.

I loved this book, it was utterly fantastic, well worth the 5 stars that I am giving it. It's my favourite read so far of 2019. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would, It's worth an 8.

I totally recommend this book, in fact I recommend the whole series. Every single book is fantastic, so start at book one and work your way through, you won't regret it!

Ooh, Robert Hunter gives me goosebumps, he’s so damn cool. Plus, I got a bit excited when I read how ripped he was when butt naked too! I still can’t picture him in my mind but he’s as sexy as Jack Reacher that’s for sure. Plus I love an intelligent and unselfish man and Robert certainly shows that in this absolute ripper of a story. Yes, Lucien is back and hot on revenge for Robert as always and Robert is just Robert, trying to rid the world of the nastiest most evil bad guys, Lucien being the number one of those. Can Robert finally rid the world of his arch nemesis once and for all? Read this awesome novel by an outstandingly talented author and you will find out.

How do you catch a killer who has mastered the art of disappearing?

(If you have not read 'An Evil Mind' by Chris Carter then i would recommend reading that one first because that is when Lucien Folter is first introduced and this review may contain spoilers)

3 and a half years after being captured and locked away by Robert Hunter, his former friend/college roommate, Lucien Folter has escaped and he intent on getting his revenge.

Hunting Evil had me on the edge of me seat, biting my nails, giving me so much anxiety from start to finish.
You can tell how much thought has gone into every sentence of this book with the knowledge behind facts and riddles and the level of gruesomeness, the murders are detailed which even made me flinch just the thought of it.
This is Carters best work yet by far, and the ending leaves it open to maybe we might get to see more of Lucien Folter in the future.

Is it bad that I want Lucien to appear in later novels?

I am so thankful for the author, the publishers and netgalley for allowing me to read this masterpiece early. I can't wait for it's release so I can out it on my shelves!
