My Quick Thoughts: This is a very cool series of master artists, and each one, like the description says, takes us through the artist’s life through their work. We learn more about the artist and how/why/what of some of their specific artwork. As we go through the pages learning, we are also creating along with the artist! While I had seen Klimt’s art before, I really had not known much before this book.

The other book I have loved in this series earlier is Art Masterclass with Claude Monet.

Disclaimer: I got a digital review copy of this books from Netgalley originally and these are my honest opinions of the book. Please note that the review is based on a more recent reading of the book (library/personal copy)

Thank you to both Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC of this wonderful book.

This books is divine, as is the Monet version, both of which we have now purchased for our library system. They are beautiful and engaging, with fantastic activities and inspiring for both children and adults. They have been especially useful with primary school aged children's art lessons and after school art clubs, pre-covid.

I love this book’s progression! From brief biography to timeline to drawing Klimt-like details. In the end, I had an increased appreciation for Klimt’s work—and I have been a fan for years! A must for fans of Klimt or budding young artist.

I applaud this series from Quarto Publishing

In this beautiful material, children develop their visual acuity and appreciation of Master Klimt's artistic style. Each lesson addresses a representative feature, such as the way the artist drew human faces and features, composition with complicated patterns to suggest the rest of the painting, his landscape scenes with his “abstract impressionistic” style, his use of shimmering gold , etc.
Each lesson is accompanied by images of the artist's artwork, so that children can learn about important works, develop their visual art acuity and judgment. In the end the child is invited to invent and create their own exhibition of works of art putting everything into practice!
The Art reflects an outstanding feature of our humanity, the ability of creative expression, the master command of symbolic language, transforming the objective in infinite subjective interpretations.

My sincere appreciation to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review the book

I truly enjoyed the Art Masterclass series. This particular book on Gustav Klimt is such a wonderful read. Not only it talks about Klimit's background but as well the techniques that he used to create his stunning and signature masterpieces. Not only children could learn about the artist, the book also helps to inspire and to encourage them to explore different mediums and techniques in creating and making art. "Art Master Class with Gustav Klimt" is an activity book that packed with interesting lessons, projects and art history. I highly recommend!

This is a fun and interesting series for children (and adults too, if you ask me!) that introduces a different artist in each book. The artist's work is discussed, covering techniques used, influences, things to look for in their style, etc. I liked that the works are broken down into pieces- use of color, use of shapes, how brushstrokes are used, light and shadow- making the work more accessible and easier to understand. Each aspect of the work has some practice exercises, leading you to create your own version of the artist's style at the end. This would make a great gift for any art lover, young or old!

Thanks for sharing this one. There are a few typos, but otherwise it's a great, inspirational art book. My full review appears on Weekend Notes.

Klimt has been one of my favourite artists for years, I love his use of colour and contrast, the way he translates sounds and music into a visual picture. This workbook is a simple yet detailed introduction to the style of Klimt. I can absolutely see this workbook inspiring some joy and creativity.Lucy Brownridge focuses on all the things I feel are essentially Klimt and the illustrations made me want to take another look at his original art.

Most kids' books about art and artists take one of two approaches: 1) the life of the artist; 2) examples of the the artist's most famous works. Now, both of those things are present in these books but the larger focus is on elements of the artist's style. In both books, we are presented with a painting that exemplifies some element of the art style. Motion, shadow, shape, focus. We look at the element and then experiment with replicating the element. These books allow young artists to experiment and develop their own art styles as well as looking at the artists' work through a new lens.

Absolutely loved! Such a fun way for kids to learn and show teach them cultural aspects to if not love but to appreciate.
Thank you the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read this novel in exchange for an honest review.

I love the introduction to Klimt as an artist, but given the intricacies of his style it seems really unrealistic to just be like "ok, draw a daisy" and then follow up on the next page saying "Now you can draw, make patterns, and paint flowers just like Klimt." I mean, yes, you can do those things and he also did things, but probably not "like" he did those things, because... his style was super unique. When I compare this to the Art Masterclass with Monet I feel that this book explained less how Klimt actually composed in his unique style.

Also I will not be bedazzling Klimt's portrait of Athena with sweets wrappers, thank you.

A super insight into one of the great artists. The brief but clear history of Klimt was engaging. I thought the twelve mini tutorials were fun and inviting, giving the reader chance to study the different techniques and then have a go themselves. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher, Wide Eyed Editions(Quarto Publishing) for an ARC.

The Art Masterclass series by Quarto Publishing is a genius collection of titles aimed at helping young readers create art akin to their favorite artists. This book, which focuses on Gustav Klimt, covers the many techniques that he utilized in his beautiful paintings, such as patterns/shapes, outlining, and using senses.

I felt this was a solid first step in helping children understand & realize that art can be broken down and created using skills they already possess. My only issue is that it is aimed at Kindergarten to 2nd grade. While the fonts and general layout support this, the text/instructions are better suited for late elementary - maybe even early middle school. The only way I see this working for the 5-to-7 age range is in a classroom setting, being lead by a teacher or art instructor.

Overall, though, I thoroughly enjoyed this particular book and the entire series, as well. It is a solid 4.5/5 stars.

Thank You to Quarto Publishing and NetGalley for this digital copy to read and review!

This is a clever little book because it can be used by anyone wanting to get an insight into he art of Gustav Klimt. It is primarily aimed at children but would suit anyone wanting an insight into his life, work, and methods. It gives you an immediate feel for his style. It is also excellent for introducing children to great artists with plenty of fun stickers and 'have a go' sections as you go along. Overall a really useful, versatile, and well designed book.

In this book, there are 12 lessons which teach you how to create art just like Klimt. In each chapter you learn a little about Klimt's style, you are then given the opportunity to recreate his work or using his ethos create your own.

I found the book intriguing and creative I would love to buy it for my nephew who is 10. He would get a thrill from doing something that is unique or at least considered unusual.

The thing I did not like about it was because I was reading it digitally the text did not enlarge much and as I was reading it on a smartphone it was difficult to see. I'm sure this would not be a problem with the printed edition.

There was one mistake that stood out in the diagram of Klimt's life it is obvious that the writer Lucy Brownridge meant 1894 but it seemed that 1994 had been printed by mistake.

Other than that printing mistake I enjoyed the book.

I love the works of Gustav Klimt so I was curious about this book. Part art lesson, part drawing therapy, part biography of Klimt, this book is full of how Klimt painted: his use of patterns, creating texture, using bold metallic colors and various styles that he went through before finding his style. Though I'm not quite sure if this is targeted to kids, because the way the tone of the book sometimes sounded to me.

Klimt painted out of the box and I'm glad to be reminded of being unconventional and abstract. I want to try the activities there now, wondering what I'll get (me who wishes I can paint and draw properly...but what is proper anyway?).

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for a copy of this book.

I appreciate the art of Klimt, but I did not know much about him before I looked at this book. It was informative, and it gave me some art ideas. Klimt made faces realistic, but the clothing was filled with patterns. This would be a great book for a child who is interested in art. It fascinated me more than the Art Masterclass with Monet book because more of the information was new to me.

What an incredible art education resource! Not only do we learn a touch of art history and theory, but we are given practical exercises to create art in the style of Klimt. The book is written with a child's audience in mind, however parents, teachers, and librarians will gain plenty of inspiration. Educators could adapt the exercises and information in this book to be appropriate for any elementary school grade.

The book encourages kids to use the same materials that Klimt used - mainly tempura paint and gold leaf. However, it notes that you can use any material and do the exercises too. It doesn't just cover Klimt's most recognizable images. We learn how to make patterns like him, how to draw from nature, how to use outline, how to understand the depth of colours, and more. One of the most interesting exercises encourages kids to "paint a song like Klimt."

There is a mistake on the timeline page near the beginning. The year 1994 is included on the timeline where it should be 1894.

I highly recommend for anyone running an art program or class for kids. Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced reading copy.

Another great addition to the Art Masterclass series. As each of the entries have the same format, this book was as perfect as the others. It has the right mixture of information and creative space.

This beautifully designed book encourages kids to engage critically with art, use their imaginations and innate powers of observation, and experiment with their own artwork without being intimidated or discouraged by a lack of the "right" materials. Art Masterclass with Gustav Klimt is an engaging tribute to an artistic genius and a fun step-by-step workbook that will inspire the young reader to discover the artist within.

(I must echo several other reviewers' concerns about the typos. There were far too many to ignore, particularly when Klimt was misidentified as Kandinsky at one point. Hopefully those were all corrected prior to publication.)

4.5 stars
