It has a very good section discussing all the different varieties. The photography is beautiful.
There are plenty of ideas on how to incorporate orchids into your house beside the typical pot next to the window.
I honestly felt like running to the garden center and buying several orchids as soon as I finished reading the book.

A clear, concise and extremely detailed guide to everything you've ever wanted to know about orchids! I love orchids - they're gorgeous, but unless you live in the tropics, keeping them alive anywhere else can be challenging. Orchid Modern gives you all the info you've ever wanted to know regarding orchid care, projects you can do with your orchids, along with a guide to orchid varieties. Super, super helpful! If you have an orchids or just like them, then this is a great resource.

There are lots of books about growing orchids. Orchid Modern has the usual instructions for growing them, extensive profiles of easy-to-grow orchid species, and gorgeous photographs that make you want to go out and buy a bunch of plants. The unique feature of this book is the middle section, which contains instructions for ten "orchid projects." These include terraria, bonsai, mobiles, wreaths, and various sculptural ways to display/grow orchids. Each of these projects has illustrated steps, as well as suggestions for maintenance. These projects really make the orchid look special and are so artistic, yet this non-artist and novice orchid grower is very tempted to give them a try! I already have several basic books on orchids but would buy this book just for the projects it contains. I also appreciate that some space has been dedicated to a discussion of orchid conservation. I highly recommend this beautifully illustrated book!

This is a beautiful book. The photography is lovely. I love my flower garden but struggle to maintain my indoor plants. Orchids always make me stop and admire. This book made me feel like I could keep an orchid going past it’s initial bloom. I loved the history portion in the beginning of the book. I did not know vanilla bean is orchid seed. There is a nice section discussing the different varieties. The special projects are amazing. I liked the orchid bonsai tree. I would like to purchase a hard copy for reference. Thank you for allowing me to review an advanced copy.

I love orchids. The strength of this book lays in the innovative and artful showcasing of orchids in many different ways. The plant descriptions are very informative, the photographs are beautiful and I have found quite a few orchid species I have not seen before. There are many tips about taking care of orchids and building your own orchid collection.

This book comes up on Goodreads as Orchid Modern:  Grow, Design, and Craft with 100 Easy-care Varieties.

This book has all of the standard plant book components  parts of the orchid, type of orchids, basic care of orchids and troubleshooting.  The unique piece of this book is the instructions for special displays - terrariums, moss balls, centerpieces and wood displays.  Oh, and the photos are fantastic!

Orchid Modern is a gardening and design guide aimed specifically at orchids. Author Marc Hachadourian is a botanist and orchid expert and curator of the orchid collection of the New York Botanical Gardens. Due out 25th June 2019 from Timber Press, it's 272 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

Orchids have had a weird reputation for ages. From the earlier modern times, they were extremely costly and rare. They often were collected in the wild, threatening natural habitats and stressing the plants to the point of death. They (unfairly) also got the incorrect label of 'difficult' and 'fussy'. With the advent of sterile culture and flasking techniques along with aseptic microculture, it's perfectly possible to reproduce desirable orchids, both species and hybrids, at low cost and with good results. This has led to many millions of orchids being reproduced and shipped to big box stores and even grocery stores. People buy them, take them home and when they fail to thrive, quite possibly through no error of the owner, they wrongly assume that the fault lies with them, and not with a stressed or unhappy plant.

That's where this book comes in. The author understands the botany and biology behind the mechanisms orchids use to grow, thrive, and reproduce. The introductory chapters include a bit of history, some layman accessible botany, a seasonal task based calendar, and wonderfully lush illustrations and photography. There's also a good basic photographic introduction on some of the different types of orchids which are available and how they differ from one another.

The middle 25% of the book has a number of really interesting and appealing tutorials for arranging and culture of orchids (instead of just bunging them into a pot and leaving it at that). The terraria are very reminiscent of 19th century naturalist style with glass-paned copper foil containers. I really love them. The showstopper of the 10 included tutorial projects has to be the orchid (and tillandsia) bonsai tree which is just breathtaking.

Roughly the final 30% of the book is a reference listing different orchids, their culture, habits, and other info.

The author has also included a comprehensive and wonderfully useful listing of ethical plant vendors and resources for further education and sourcing materials. I spent literally hours link-hopping from one vendor to the next. The links listed are for vendors worldwide and are just amazing. Along with the vendor list is a list of worldwide botanical gardens with displays of orchids (and links to their collections, if available).

This is a beautifully written and presented book with -gorgeous- projects and so very many more orchids to introduce to the home hobbyist than just the Phalaenopsis with which we're all familiar.

Five enthusiastic stars. I will be recommending this book to all my gardening friends.

★★★★★ The publisher provided a copy for review
If you live near a florist or in a warm climate, chance are you've brought home an orchid. The flowers last a long time - and bring a sophisticated touch of the jungle to any corner. In my tropical home, I repurposed thick guava branches from a 40-yr-old tree as orchid stands. But if you love orchids and live in outside the tropics, you need this book.

Hachadourian offers many arrangements for the modern home - stunning combinations of natural and found objects, care and cultivation, and how and where to display your creations. The step-by-step instructions and stunning photos will delight you.

For a special occasion, you may want to take this book to your florist - I guarantee you'll get more than you bargained for in return. Highly recommended for lovers of flowers.
