I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

There was nothing I liked about this book, except the title.

There are silly books and there are beyond past any reasonable doubt silly. There is no point to this book. Very disappointing.

A kind of quiet comic strip, not so much a laugh-out-loud comic as a makes-you-smile-with nostalgia sort of thing. I enjoyed it, it's got a hook to it, sucked me right in. While there is no explanation for why Alison and her parents live with a robot, a monkey, and five penguins, they all seem to accept it like it's no big deal, so I did too. I'm sure kids would enjoy this strip, but I feel like adults are as much the intended audience as kids; there are many 80s and 90s pop culture references, and the kid stuff reminds me of when I was a kid, so much nostalgia there. This wants to be another Calvin & Hobbes (at least, that's the feeling I got). It's not quite there yet, but it's getting there. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.

I wasn't familiar with this comic before reading this book. The art style is a little rough and the content is well tread territory. Calvin and Hobbes meets Phoebe and Her Unicorn. Cute but ultimately kind of forgettable.

'Alison and her Rock Awesome Robot Vol. 1' by Fred Chao is about Alison, her pet robot, her mother and father and the 5 penguins and a monkey they live with.

I don't know why Alison's house has penguins and a monkey. I'm not even sure why there is a robot. I suppose we don't need to know. I also don't know why the artist has a comic strip among these comic strips where he shares an office with celebrity chef Alton Brown. There is a lot of silly concept here.

Unfortunately, they don't often result in many laughs. It would be a cute kids comic, but there is so much cultural reference to 80s and 90s culture that much of that would go over a kids head.

But Alison is pretty funny with her love for pillow fights and cherry popsicles. There is poor Carl with his unrequited crush on Alison. There are Alison's parents who feel pretty normal.

Cute read. The kids enjoyed reading. Was a nice pace and well written. Will post a full review shortly on the blog.

About a sixth of the way through. Zero laughs. Zero explanation of why the household was like it was. Far too American and nonsensical for my taste.

"Alison and Her Rock Awesome Robot" is a cute, short graphic novel. I think some of our middle-grade patrons will enjoy this title. Will recommend.
