A lovely Gothic mystery romance. It certainly kept me intrigued! This is why I so enjoy Abigail Wilson's writings. Always looking forward to her next great novel. Reminds me a bit of Jane Eyre.

Contains some mature topics, especially close to the end. Would recommend for 18 and up.

If you like this style of plot, also check out Hannah Linder's Beneath His Silence.

Rebecca Hunter is forced to leave her home for Greybourne Hall by Lewis Browning, her guardian and the man she blames for her brother’s death there. Plagued by nightmares and her fear of inherited madness, Rebecca soon finds that looking into her brother’s death may lead to unwanted results. And that nothing is as she expects, including her guardian and her feelings for him.

With duplicitous characters, unexpected twists, a setting with a distinct presence, and a feeling of foreboding, Abigail Wilson again shows her skills in weaving a Gothic Regency tale in Midnight on the River Grey.

While I typically prefer romance not to be in first person, Rebecca’s added a depth and genuine feel that had me appreciating the choice to have her narrate this story. I greatly enjoyed this story filled with themes of guilt, sin, redemption, and the slow-burning romance between Rebecca and Lewis, along with the small subplot that sees a new future open up for Rebecca’s kindly and devoted Aunt Jo. I only regret that illness in 2019 had me putting off reading Midnight on the River Grey, and that it took me this long to get to it - now on to reading everything subsequently published by this author with great relish!

Highly recommended.

This is my second book by this author. If anything, I found it even better than the first book! It's a lovely mix of mystery, and romance, with core values included. It carries the historical feel very well. Rebbecca and her plight quickly had my attention. I also love a good mystery and watching a character grow to know who, and in whom, they can trust. My frustrations with this book were along the lines I have with some tv shows of films. Sometimes people do things that make no sense to me at all, but that's often just me. I did like the twists and the fact that this is a clean read that took me to another time and place for a while.

My copy came from Celebrate Lit. My review is my own left of my own free will.

After reading multiple books by this author in both book form and audio form I have come to conclusion that she is not the author for me. However, her books are well written and well researched those who like regency fiction with mystery and suspense will love this

Midnight on the River Grey is the kind of story I love to get lost in with its old house, mystery, and sweet love story.

Rebecca Hunter has had so much to deal with in the past few years. Her mother's struggle with mental illness and her subsequent death; her brother Jacob's fatal accident that was likely murder; and then, being sent with her Aunt Jo to live with the man that many believe is responsible for Jacob's death.
What follows is a story filled with mystery, intrigue, and the tantalizing start of a romance between Rebecca and her guardian Lewis Browning. The very strong attraction between the two of them soon becomes obvious and their first kiss simply took my breath away!

Set in the Regency era, this book reminds me of the gothic romances by Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart that I fell in love with many years ago. Greybourne Manor with its many rooms and dark passageways; mysterious midnight rides and a hero who has been referred to as the Midnight Devil; and the young heroine who can't determine her true feelings for her guardian.

'Lewis Browning. What was he to me? My guardian? My coconspirator? My brother's murderer? Or something else entirely?'

Midnight on the River Grey is the first book that I've read by Abigail Wilson but it won't be my last. She has proven herself to be a wonderful historical fiction author and I look forward to enjoying more of her books in the future!

Oh how I love Abigail Wilson’s way of writing. She writes amazing Gothic Regency Romances that are clean. Which is a plus. I throughly enjoyed this story!

Synopsis:
After her brother’s mysterious death, Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible: Mr. Lewis Browning—known by the locals as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new guardian.

Summoned to his reclusive country estate to await her London season, Rebecca plans her own secret investigation among the darkened corridors of the mysterious Greybourne Hall. Yet Lewis Browning is not as she once imagined, and his motivation is horribly unclear. Recurrent nightmares and Rebecca’s restless feelings are further complicated by the shadow of her mother’s prior descent into madness and wondering if she, too, will follow the same heartbreaking path.

Even as midnight rides, strange injuries, and further murders lead back to Mr. Browning, Rebecca can’t ignore the subtle turn of her heart. Has she fallen for the man she swore would pay for her brother’s death? And moreover, can she trust him with her uncertain future?

Over the past few years, I've found myself very picky over the fiction that I read. Maybe it's my age. I could not get into this title, and I tried a couple of times. There were some parts that I found engrossing and some that I just wanted to skip over.

I've yet to find out what makes my kind of fiction and I hope I figure it out soon.

I very much enjoyed author Wilson's debut novel and I was quite excited to be able to read Midnight on the River Grey. This was a dark, gothic novel that was very hard to put down due to the many secrets, a few murder mysteries, a heroin who may or may not be going mad, and a gentleman who keeps going on midnight rides.

Rebecca Hunter has already lost her parents, and now her brother has died under mysterious circumstances. Her guardian, the very mysterious Lewis Browning, has decided to move her and her aunt to his home, Greybourne Hall. That also happens to be near where her brother died.

Love Abigail's historical, gothic fiction! I'm a huge fan of Jane Eyre and her books always give me a Jane Eyre vibe, which I always love!

A spinning tale of mystery and love! I definitely liked the twists and turns mixed with so much intrigue. This is one of those that makes you second guess all your thoughts the whole way through! Brooding Lewis will keep you on your toes as to his motives and actions. Rebecca definitely knew how to get into trouble and was well written for who she was. I loved the slow but direct connection between these two as they both fight the mystery and try to figure out what is really going on. A satisfying happy ever after made it a good read!!
Thanks to Celebrate Lit for this wonderful story. These are my own opinions stated here.

I enjoy a good romantic suspense story, and when this title appeared with its hint of classic Gothic romance from a well-known Christian publisher, I was intrigued. Although "Midnight on the River Grey" is classed by online retailers as a Christian mystery, the book is a sweet romantic mystery with no obvious spiritual or moral themes. The way crucial details were presented and the lack of emotional tension in both the romance and the mystery story lines weakened "Midnight on the River Grey" and prevent me from giving it my wholehearted recommendation. If you like a light mystery story with a little spookiness and a sweet romance, you might find it a good read, but those looking for something with substance will need to look elsewhere.

What I think you should know:
Midnight on the River Grey is the second novel by author, Abigail Wilson. It is romantic mystery set in the Regency Era . Against her wishes Rebecca Hunter is brought to her guardian’s home, however that is the last place she wants to be as her guardian Mr. Lewis Browning played a part in her brother’s death. Rebecca is convinced that she will be able to find out the truth. I do not know that I would call this a Christian novel as it was not strong on a faith message.

What I enjoyed most about this book:
Rebecca is character i enjoyed, she has such spunk, but she always has her fears that makes her character very interesting. I also loved Aunt Jo, she was more fun than most chaperones that I have read about. The book had a little bit over everything it needed to make it an enjoyable read, mystery, romance, suspense. I will definitely read more of Wilson's books.

Who will love this book: ( just to name a few)
Fans of Regency Era Novels
Fans of Mystery
Fans of Clean Romance

MIDNIGHT ON THE RIVER GREY is a story with a very Gothic feel and a constant undertone of danger while romantic sparks fly. The characters are easy to like and the story is engaging from beginning to end. Recommended to historical romantic suspense fans!

This story was so much fun! From the start you could feel romantic tension begin to build between Rebecca and Lewis and that tension just continued to grow, with plenty of swoon-worthy moments. I also really liked Rebecca and her aunt. Their relationship was simply charming and I adored it! The suspense was constant. At one point, it felt very Jane Eyre like and I wondered if there was a mentally unstable person hidden away. There were so many secrets and Rebecca had to figure out who to trust, who to believe, and what questions she needed to ask. There were some predictable parts, but there were also quite a few twists. I also could not put this down and stayed up late to finish it because I just had to find out what would happen. The characters were great and I really enjoyed the roller-coaster of emotions and figuring out the mystery.

There were just a few things that didn't quite work for me. The reasoning behind selling the townhouse in London and some other things were never explained. I also did get a little frustrated that Rebecca didn't just ask Lewis about her brother instead of always feeling like she had to be careful, and that the letter from Lewis explaining things wasn't part of the story until quite a ways in. The other thing was that knowing what I did at the end of the story, I didn't see how one of the things that happened could have under the circumstances (I can't say more without spoiling it). I also felt the epilogue was unnecessary.

In the end, was it what I wished for? Again, this was a really fun story! I had a few issues, but they didn't affect my overall enjoyment of it. This author writes really great characters and the romance was fabulous!

Midnight on the River Grey was a captivating read. It started off slowly, but the story drew me in and I ended up really enjoying the book. I liked how it had so many twists and the mystery wasn't easy to guess.

The characters were well written. I found the heroine, Rebecca, to be a bit reckless at times, but I liked how she wasn't afraid of finding out the truth. Lewis was an interesting character...I didn't know at first whether he was a good guy or not!

All in all, Midnight on the River Grey was better than I hoped and I recommend it. I look forward to reading more of this author's books in the future.

Well I'm going to attempt to do something good to this book. It did heal me of some of this disease readers call "a reading slump". Where to begin??

It was a cold dark night, the moon was shadowed by clouds and a fog had grown up around the river. The bridge was slick and my was horse tired, or maybe it was I who was tired. In my daze I couldn't tell. The night was eerily quiet, far to quiet to mean anything good. The next second an alarming sound rang out over the waters and a man appeared in front of me. My horse bolted, slamming into the man and pushing him over the side of the bridge. Jacob was dead. I claimed it was an accident, yet many believed me to be telling a lie.

But on that night when things went wrong who's to say what was going on?

Rebecca Hunter does not believe Mr. Browning innocent and when he makes her leave her town house she gets upset. But after moving into this old gothic house near where her brother perished things begin to happen. Dark things. Mysterious things. And Rebecca is determined to get all the details of her brother's death, even if it means talking to the one man she hates most.

For the first quarter of this book I was board out of my mind . . . however I can't blame it entirely on the book itself for as I said before I have been in a reading slump. It did cheer me up halfway through when I figured out what might have happened. Then I found out surprisingly I was correct and my excitement at being right caused me to love the book more. ^.^

Details were average. . .although the setting was rather well described and built. I loved the gothic nature of this book!! 😍 The old creeping manor.

The content was some gore and hints of sexual relationships . . . the one character was good at seducing men. I didn't like her from the beginning, even though she seemed nice. ;P

The nightmares freaked me out a lot. And Sophie's disappearance was a good twist. One that confused me for a while.

The romance was beautiful. I discovered the beauty and the beast elements immediately . . . .

The plot was well done. I can't find loads of problems with it (xD), but I didn't LOVE it at the same time. So it's kinda like a meh. I do suggest that those who are intrigued by gothic settings and unique romance check it out.
