I’ve been looking forward to Flora’s story from the moment I finished The Royals last year. Millie and her princess didn’t disappoint in Her Royal Highness.

I laughed so hard reading The Royals last year that I knew I would be dying for the rest of the books in this series. It’s been a year, but I’ve never stopped thinking about Flora and her crazy antics, wondering who could possibly be the girl for her. Thank goodness Rachel Hawkins knew just how to bring out the best parts of Flora, and who she needed in her life.


Her Royal Highness tells us how Millie Quint, Texan, geology-obsessed, fan of the outdoors goes off to boarding school in Scotland and ends up falling for the last girl she ever could have imagined, her royal Highness, Princess Flora of Scotland.

Flora is eager to get herself un-banished from the newly integrated Gregorstoun boarding school so she can get back to her flashy, more exciting royal life. That is until someone at the school gives her a reason to like it there. Enter her awkward, yet endearing roommate, Millie Quint.






Anyone who read the first book in this series, Prince Charming (formerly known as The Royals), is probably as excited to get their hands on Princess Flora’s story as I was.

I mean, who doesn’t love a good story about a royal, any royal, falling for a commoner? I mean, we’ve only seen a ton of those stories play out in pop culture. And lately, with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sweeping us all up in their romance (and new baby, Archie!), it’s more fun than ever to put ourselves in her situation. To imagine what it would be like to be loved by someone that important and be swept up in the chaos of their world.

So it’s even more important than ever to read stories about lesbian princesses and bisexual Texans who seem like complete opposites, but who quickly find themselves completely fascinated by each other.

When I’m reading YA romance, I am always hoping to be swept up in the sweetness and earnestness of young love. There’s something much less jaded about teenagers in love stories. They haven’t had to endure the slog of day jobs and bill payments yet, so their outlooks on love are always more hopeful and wholly encompassing than those of older love.

I found that and a whole lot more in Her Royal Highness. I remembered Flora as having a bit of a mean streak in her, so I was a little worried about what challenges she may have in store for whomever may be brave enough to try loving her. And while Flora definitely didn’t make it easy, she wasn’t nearly as angry as I thought she was. Underneath all her bluster, Flora was really just looking for someone who liked her at her core, rather than just the flashy girl everyone knows from the tabloids.

Millie was definitely up for the challenge, even if she didn’t appear to be at the beginning of this book. I wasn’t sure at the beginning that I was going to like reading this story from purely Millie’s perspective. I was so eager to get into Flora’s head and understand her that I was a teensy bit disappointed at first. But once I started this story, I realized that Flora is one of those girls who wears her heart on her sleeve. It’s why she has so much trouble keeping her relationships private and out of the public eye. Once she’s enamored with someone, she can’t help but radiate it.

So it is way more important for us to know what Millie is feeling. How she is handling befriending and courting our favorite Scottish princess is way more of a mystery than how Flora feels. I loved every step of this story. From their initial confrontations to the incredibly necessary grand romantic gesture, Millie and Flora had me ferociously flipping pages to see what they had in store for me next.

In addition to falling in love with Flora and Millie, I have developed a pretty substantial crush on Sebastian. Our experiences with him in The Royals painted him as a crazy party boy, but the part he plays in the latter part of this book had me swooning more than a little. He’s got way more to him than he wants anyone to know, and I can’t wait to see what Rachel Hawkins has in store for him in the future.

Sebastian isn’t the only secondary character I found myself obsessed with. Lady Sakshi and Perry are so freaking delightful from the moment they enter the scene that I definitely want to see more of them. Even if it’s just as background if we get stories for rest of the Royal Wreckers. There’s also Baby Glynnis, sorry, I mean Nicola, who only had a brief appearance, but managed to make an impression.

More or less, I just loved this story. Flora wasn’t my favorite character before Her Royal Highness, but she’s absolutely one I want to continue to hear from as we go on. I pretty much fell for her almost as hard as Millie did. So, I’ll just be over here hoping beyond hope that Rachel Hawkins has all kinds of plans for more books in this series. I love this world and these characters so, so much, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
