Seeker by Kim Chance is the second book in a series, which I did not realise when I first picked it up. Since I had not read the first book , I found this a little confusing at first, but the author incorporated enough background information that I was able to pick the threads of the story up as I went along.
The story is told from three perspectives , Lainey, Maggie and Ty. Lainey is a very powerful witch who struggles to control her magic and use it safely, and is consumed with guilt for the harm she has inadvertently caused. Her best friend Maggie is waiting for her Shifter powers to kick in after being bitten , but she is starting to worry that something is going wrong. Ty is determined to avenge his father's death and doesn't care what it takes or who gets hurt along the way. Meanwhile the Master, a magician who is using dark magic is gaining power and the only way to defeat him will be for the trio to work together.
This book is fun and fast paced, with plenty of action. I thought it was interesting to have Ty be such a devious and manipulative character, and Maggie, with her comic book obsession was a lot of fun,
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.

Seeker by Kim Chance is an enjoyable conclusion to a YA fantasy duology. In the first novel, Keeper, Lainey Styles discovers she is a witch, and her world turns upside down. The story introduces the main characters and explains the reason for the supernatural battle that is to come. In this book, Seeker, we continue with the journey. Lainey is trained on how to access, use, and control her powers and prepares for the ultimate end of the story.

What I Like:

The depth of the writing greatly improved from the first novel to the second. When reading the first novel, you feel like you are skimming the surface, but, in this novel, you get to dive in and truly experience the story with all your senses. I love to see a story grow and develop as much as the characters should.

I love Maggie, the self-proclaimed Sam Wise to Lainey's Frodo. I feel like this is a good comparison for these characters, as I have always argued that Sam Wise is the real hero of The Lord of the Rings and can say (as Lainey did) that Maggie is a hero of this story. Much like Sam Wise, she has the strength of character to make the hard choices that ultimately lead to a successful conclusion. She isn't forced into the situation, as Lainey is by her heritage; instead, Maggie chooses to be there and support her friend. She willingly is a proactive participant, even when Lainey tries to push her away.

I like the fight scenes, especially the final battle. Fights are notoriously difficult to portray, especially in novels, but the fight scenes in Seeker make it look easy.

What I Wish:

I wish I liked the protagonist more. I found Lainey to be very angsty, and I never felt that there was any more to her than her angst. I wanted to like her more, to get to know her better, but the development of her character is not to the extent where I could.

There are some elements of the timeline that I found confusing, and I wish they were explained better. As always, I try to avoid spoilers, so though I think this is impactful enough to mention, I must keep the specifics vague. I can say that my confusion has to do with the longevity of supernatural lives and how that works exactly.

I also wish the novel stayed in one perspective, as the first novel did. I find that my personal experience as a reader is disrupted when I must figure out who is talking now. It's a technique that is used by many writers, but I have never experienced it utilized without disrupting my reading flow.

To Reader or Not to Read:

Keeper and Seeker are good additions to any YA Fantasy fan's library. It has a strong good versus evil plot and is enjoyable to read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was quite a fun book to read where Lainey, Maggie, and Ty made the core of the story. Lainey was the Keeper of the magic. She had to prevent Master, who had killed her family, from getting the Grimoire. Maggie was her best friend who had been bitten by a Shifter. And Ty was the one who betrayed her.

My second book by author Kim Chance, it was fun to see Lainey grow up. The initial few chapters were about her training as a witch with the leftover emotions of the first book which fueled her with anger over the betrayal and guilt over the death of a loved one due to her magic. There was many such scenes where she was quite self-absorbed, but the author gave her the swift kick on the butt at the right time to uplift the story.

Changes occurred in these characters, some were life threatening, and some had to come from within. All was not as it seemed. The characters were made to find themselves and grow into their own skin to be the person they were supposed to be. The love and friendship flowed in their bond, but the threat of the Master who wanted to kill Lainey and possess her magic was ever present which made the story exciting.

Twists galore, I didn't expect so many. Masks over some faces were firmly placed right till the end. The author's writing was fast paced, easy to understand even if book 1 hadn't been read. There was a feeling of the impending action down the pages.

The last few chapters were a rocking ride and the finale left me bubbling with excitement. A book with spells and magic as a theme was always exciting. A bit more action would have soothed my bloodthirsty heart. Overall, it was magical read.

I want to preface this by saying I love Kim Chance’s Youtube channel. I requested the second book via NetGalley and by the time I had finished the first, I knew she was not the author for me. But I finished the second book and I can definitely see younger audiences, who perhaps have less emotional baggage than my adult self, enjoying this book.

‘Seeker’ is Kim Chance’s second contemporary fantasy novel, a direct continuation of her debut ‘Keeper’ and the second part of the duology with the same name. It features a world of hidden magic and magical people layered on top of ours.

The plot was simple but a step up from the slight mundanity of ‘Keeper’ – stakes are higher, the setting is darker and the characters have more to deal with, both inside and outside.

I still failed to connect with Lainey as the protagonist. The traits I disliked in the first book were unfortunately ramped up to eleven due to her magical outburst.

The POVs of Ty anf Maggie were a new addition. I am unsure if these were necessary as there were a few moments where the story dragged and I struggled to keep reading. Nevertheless, I still got an interesting insight into Ty’s past who was by far my favourite character.

The relationships in ‘Seeker’ somehow failed to touch me. It all felt very superficial and maybe I’m cynical about love but there were a few moments where I found the character’s responses unrealistic. The story would have been strong without any romance but I suppose it is part of the genre.

I liked the showdown at the end – the build-up was done very well. The twists and turns of the grand finale made the book worth my time.

The writing style in the second book has improved. It’s still simple and easy to read but more polished. It sounds like Ms Chance really found her voice on the pages of ‘Seeker’ and I congratulate her on this. From her channel I know she struggled with it and I think the end result is good and something to be proud of.

First off, thank you so much for sending me an ARC!

I was so excited to read this, and I did read the first chapter, but was really confused. I then went to Goodreads and figured out why. I had no idea this was a sequel to a book I haven’t even read nor heard of. This is completely my fault, I should have done my research better before requesting this. However, I have now added the first book to my wish list and I hope to get around to reading it soon. It sounds like something that I will for sure enjoy. Until then, I obviously won’t be able to read Seeker.

Thanks again for sending a copy of this my way and I’m terribly sorry I won’t get to read it just yet. Perhaps someday I will!

Seeker is the follow up to Keeper

Lainey was a bit miserable for too long. She is dealing with a lot. So many characters just kill and destruct and accept it. She can't. It weighs on her and that is refreshing. Between that, Ty's back stabbing and adjusting to her new role, she is struggling. However, there comes a point where you just want to yell get on with it.

Meanwhile, Maggie is doing better with her comics and new interest with Oliver. The issue here is while we have plenty of meat with the existing characters, new characters like Oliver aren't as well flushed out. It is hard to understand or even infer his motivations because we don't have enough to go on. There isn't really enough to even get a suspenseful is he or isn't he liking maggie or just not into her kind of vibe.

Ty, on the other hand, is not wavering. He is up to no good. His agenda is his power play. He wants it all and he will stop at nothing to get it.

Overall, this is a good follow-up to Keeper. The pacing can be off at times but the writing is solid.

I knew starting this book that it was 2nd in the series I have not read. I was hoping that would be ok. I was a little lost in the beginning of this book but I felt the author tried to help let me know what I missed. I guess I was hoping for me this book would've have grabbed me more than what it did. I do really enjoy the character of Maggie and over all the book was good but I think I was looking for that spark to get me up to 4 and 5 star. But I would read more from this author. I think you should check out this series and see what you think. "This book was given to me for free at my request from NetGalley and I provided this voluntary review."

📚EEEKK!!! This book was amazing! After getting off to a slow start, mostly my fault😬, I tore through the second half of the book. The addition of Ty’s and Maggie’s POVs were a wonderful addition and It made me love Maggie even more! I also like that we got to learn more about Ty and see the reasons behind the choices he has made.
As for the story, there were so many parts where I was just sitting there fangirling. 💁🏽‍♀️The relationships that are built in this book were super fun to read about, I do wish that there was a little more of it sometimes, but they were beautifully written. Let me say again, I love Maggie. Her relationship with this new boy kills me, it’s so funny! Of course, one of my favorite things about the duology isn’t the romantic relationships, but the friend and family relationships. The relationship between Lainey and Maggie is so sweet, everyone deserves to have a BFF like this. I also loved the different versions of relationships between family members and the strength that is shown through them.
The plot for this story is interesting. I love books with magic in them and part of that comes from getting to watch these magical people learn more about their powers and become confident in them. This book did not disappoint. Lainey had a lot to learn since the end of the first book, both in terms of magic and how to deal with different internal struggles she’s dealing with. It was interesting to watch her emotional journey and the way that the previous events have an effect on her in this book.
Overall, this was a satisfying conclusion to this duology and I would highly recommend it! 📚

When I sat down and read Keeper for the first time, it reminded me at once of the books that I had genuinely loved when I was a teenager, and Seeker continues it perfectly. Totally brought me back to my days of obsessing over L.J. Smith novels, and I mean that in the best possible way. Everything Keeper had, Seeker has more of. Deeper into the world, deeper into the characters, with more twists and turns, villainy, and one of the best friendships I’ve seen in a book (yesss, Maggie!). We see Lainey come into her own, learn the truth about Ty, and meet myriad new characters that add so much fun to the tale. There’s supernatural creatures, tension, suspense, romance, and more magic than you can shake a stick at! I enjoyed Keeper, and Seeker is even better, giving a satisfying end to Lainey’s story. It’s a duology well worth picking up!

This is I believe a second instalment to a series, this was not something I knew before going in. That having said the book was enjoyable enough, it just took me a while to get into the book.
I did however not like the three different points of view, it was a bit too jumpy for me, but then again I have not read the first book yet.

The characters were interesting enough and likeable. The setting is quite interesting and now I feel the need to go and read book one.

I really enjoyed Keeper. It was such a different and well though out book. Seeker falls a but flat for me on this front. I just couldn't seem to jump in and care about the characters the same way I did in the first book.
That is not to say that the world or storyline isn't unique. It still has that whimsical fantasy vibe I enjoyed in the first. But this one just didn't grab me as much.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This but book was a lot of fun and a breeze to read.

I hadn't read the first one and it jumps straight into the action but there's some pretty decent exposition to help along.

I really liked the fact that it was told from three points of view.

I think Ty's story was my favorite but I adored Maggie's comic book love.

And hooray for strong friendships between women!

If you've been waiting (as I have) for the finale of Keeper to be released, it's here, and it's fantastic!

Kim does a great job of covertly throwing in reminders of the details you may have forgotten from Keeper, making a nice segway into Seeker. The story picks up shortly after where it left off, and the characters, who were already pretty well fleshed out in book one, are solidified in Seeker. This book has a different setting, but Kim doesn't spend too much time harping on descriptions, which is good--the action is what we're looking for, and she still provides good imagery of the farm where this book takes place. Authors tend to over-describe when the setting changes and that can bog down the story, especially when the reader just wants to get back to it, so this was a brilliant move on Kim's part.

There are some unforeseen plot twists (I had an entirely different idea of Ty's motivation at the end of Keeper) that I didn't see coming, and I LOVED that.

I promise, Seeker will not disappoint and you get everything you like from this sequel. The story ties up nicely at the end, and there are no lingering questions or unresolved storylines.

Highly recommend!

Ok I'm a little late to the party and hadn't realised this was the second book but actually there's enough here for me to have some idea what has previously happened. Lainey is struggling to come to terms with the violence and mayhem that her magic caused . She sees herself as a murderer and just cannot get over the deaths but then she doesn't have the luxury of wallowing because Lainey is the key to fulfilling all the Masters plans. Struggling to come to terms with her off the charts powers is just the start though as a blast from the not so distant past is about to reappear but can Ty ever be trusted ?
This was unusual in that as much as Lainey is our main protagonist we also get a lot of her friend Maggie who has been bitten by a Were. Maggie is expecting to become a Shifter but fate has other plans for her although ironically it does involve Shifters. I feel readers might be divided by Maggie because her constant popular culture references and obvious Nerdy ways did occasionally feel like overkill.
For most of this book Lainey is feeling sorry for herself and I could understand why certain characters obviously wanted to shake her. I actually preferred the parts that featured Ty as he is a young man with baggage of his own and his betrayal added angst and emotion to the story that was definitely needed. There is an ending although I'm honestly not sure how I felt about the big reveal. I will say this is aimed at YA readers who want a happy ending although with that cover resembling the actress from Twilight I'm sure most readers will have guessed the audience it's primarily aimed at. Sadly for me there just wasn't enough action but it was easy to read.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Many thanks to Flux for having a chance to read this title in exchange for an honest review.

I was very happy to be able to get a copy of the second book as well. It has been a rather long time between the realease of book one an two. So I was very relieved when I started book two and got back to the story easily.

Even though I had major problems with Ty at first because I thought his betrayal was totally stupid when he and Lainey share a common goal I moved along with the story rather quickly. But after some time I had problems with Lainey because she felt totally miserable about Ty's betrayal, not being able to master her powers and having killed people. That is toally understandable but it got a little bit out of hand. There was no end in sight. And I was totally clueless about Oliver. I did not understand in the beginning whether he found Maggie simply annoying or whether he was indeed liking her.

All in all I loved the romance and I loved nerdy Maggie ... and magic of course! The writing style felt very good. It was neither annoying, nor spectecular. I was able to enjoy it. I liked the plot as well. There was a bit more depth in this book because of the backgronds of the new characters. But overall I have the feeling that it was just scraping at the surface. The story has more potential but it is likeable enough. I had a nice time.

Thank you so much!

In the wake of the explosive finale in Keeper, Lainey and Maggie have been spirited out of the Master’s reach by a group of paranormal renegades. Lainey is dealing with the loss of her uncle, Ty’s betrayal, and the ever-present threat that the Master will find her as well as the pressure of having to conceal where the grimoire really is.
Seeker is a solid follow up to Keeper. The pacing remains solid, the characters and storyline develop at a satisfying pace. There was a bit of a lull until the mid-point, but it picked up again and I was left just as satisfied with this book as I was with the first.
Maggie and Ty are so well-developed here, I couldn’t help but be more focused on their progression than Lianey’s, though hers was just as intriguing.
Kim Chance has done a great job of building this world that exists right in the midst of our own and oh, how I want this secret world to be real!

Book summary
Lainey's normal, bookworm life no longer exists. With her family murdered by the Master, she joins forces with a group of Supernatural rebels. But as she struggles to cope with her new role as Keeper and the uncontrollable power it gives her, Lainey realizes that magic does indeed leave a mark-but it's not always physical.

Ty isn't one of the good guys. He's done terrible things, and he won't stop until he gets what he wants. Even if it hurts. Even if it means betraying the girl he loves . . . again. For Maggie, all her comic book dreams have come true, and her new life as a Shifter is just beginning. But with war closing in, is it truly a dream or a death sentence?
