How far will someone go to fulfill their duty? Can love conquer all? Even time?
N. Jade Gray shows us in Raider of Her Heart a time-travel novel which takes place mostly in the present.

I like the Hero, Judson Stone, travels not only in time but in the US Midwest. Though tired and drained emotionally and physically he is charged with delivering a message in an attempt to thwart a raid on a nearby town.

Sadie Winters lives in present-day Kansas. She has a job she's good at and shares her home with Grandfather. She raises and trains miniature horses as service animals. Recovering from a failed relationship, she is finding her way again.

I enjoyed many aspects of Raider of Her Heart. Judson as a man-out-of-time is smart, capable, and a gentleman. Sadie is kind, funny, and spunky. Grandpa Walt is a great secondary character. My only gripe about him is when I realized his true age I'd expected a much older man. At sixty-eight, his portrayal was not what one would expect in this day and age. However, that said, I really like him, his kind heart, and youthful attitude.

The story moves along at a good pace, and both Sadie and Judson make life-affirming and life-changing decisions. In the end, the author raises the question I think many would wonder about if time travel were possible. Can a time traveler change the future?

I recommend the book as an enjoyable and often amusing tale. One with a satisfying love story and ending.

I thought the plot was quite interesting and entertaining, but I have to say Sadie seemed unnecessarily abrasive, especially in the first half of the book. Additionally, Walt was only 68, and hardly seemed like he should be treated in such a condescending manner by Sadie, particularly considering she raises miniature therapy horses to help at an assisted living center and presumably understands how to treat people with compassion and respect. Aside from that, and after Sadie became more human, the book was great. Most time travel adventures have characters who end up in Europe in the Viking or Middle Ages, so it was a fun and refreshing change to read about someone from the American Civil War traveling to modern day Kansas.

I was given a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
