The Ice Cream Book has over 400 recipes and boy are they good. I did not have a chance to make all of them and hope I can continue soon.

They are detailed, easy to make and the instructions will make you hungry.

I absolutely adored this book and now have it on my coffee table.

You scream, I scream, we all scream for this amazing Ice Cream Book. It has some wonderful and tasty ice cream recipes and they so simple and easy to make with just the things you have at home. You can never go wrong with delicious home made ice cream.

This is definitely not a standard ice cream recipe book. I wasn't familiar with a frappe (but oh my gosh - grapefruit juice frappe?!), or --strangely-- making ice (avocado ice! what?!), or a tortoni. The recipes are very interesting and new to me. The Ice Cream Book is a different level than I had expected, however I had lots of fun learning the different types of frozen desserts that I wasn't previously familiar with. I'm not sure if it's because I read the e-book, however I would have preferred more photos and step by step instructions (I'm that kind of learner). I also have learned that I need to work on my patience while creating frozen desserts.

While this book is full of ice cream recipes of every imaginable type, I think it is more for historical cookbook reading. It is not the first cookbook I would turn to when making ice cream. However if I was looking for something elegant, it is the perfect cookbook. I would have enjoyed it more if it had been updated a bit with some photographs or something to break up the monotony.

An interesting and comprehensive resource on frozen deserts. Although this has worth purely from the historical point of view, many of the recipes are also useful today.

The Ice Cream Book: Over 400 Recipes by one of the Gourmet Magazine founders, Louis P De Gouy (1876–1947) and famous chef for 30 years at the Waldorf Astoria includes hundreds of great recipes for almost everything frozen. He emphasizes the fact that cooks don’t need any special equipment other than a refrigerator or a hand freezer. Unfortunately, many are too busy to make frozen desserts the old fashioned way, and find themselves adapting his recipes to modern appliances like automatic ice cream machines and electric ice cream freezers.

While these recipes are fabulous, there are very few pictures, which is a huge drawback, and using this book is almost like going back to old cookbooks of the past. While this book is worth having, it seems to be a bit overpriced for the lack of pictures and modern cooking practices.

A comprehensive collection of frozen desserts of every kind. If it's icecream you want them you are bound to find a recipe to suit in this book.

A great book full of great recipes and interesting flavour combinations. No icecream machine is necessarily required which is also a bonus.

I plan to buy my sister a copy of this book as a gift as I know she and her children would put it to great use.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advance copy of this title in exchange for an unbiased review.

The Ice Cream Book by Louis P. De Gouy is an unexpected treasure to review. This recipe book is a republication of the author’s original 1938 Ice Cream Desserts for Every Occasion. The format of the book has not been altered and the numerous recipes and detailed instructions will be of interest to many culinary chefs.

One of my favourite desserts is definitely ice cream. De Gouy’s The Ice Cream Book is an amazing collection of every type of frozen dessert you can think of. Written almost a century ago, this recipe book is written for homemakers wanting dessert ideas. As the author states in the foreword,

“If she wants easy, economical, ever-popular answers, she will turn to ice cream.”

Keeping in mind that the instructions and tips for readers in this republication have not been edited since 1938, the book is an interesting historical look at how women were expected to cook and prepare food. While I had a laugh at some of the writing, there are some recipes that are quite relevant today.

❀ DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS

De Gouy gives a lot of detailed instruction about the types of ice cream, the functions of ingredients, and a variety of how-to’s as well. Also, there is an entire section on frappés that I am really excited to try. However, my favourite parts of the book are the quotes from many well-known people, such as Benjamin Franklin.

❀ CONTAINS A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE

While this book is not written to be used with the modern conveniences of today’s day, it contains a wealth of knowledge on how to create hundreds of frozen treats. The addition of images may have made the book more appealing to read, but it is still an entertaining step back in time. For those looking for some of Louis P. De Gouy’s original recipes, The Ice Cream Book is not to be missed.

What I really like about this book is it has just about every recipe you can think of for frozen desserts, including, Bombe, Coupe, Frappe, Ice, Ice Cream, Mousse, Parfait, and Sherbet! 400 glorious recipes for refreshing desserts in the summer, or anytime! I would have really liked to see some pictures in this book, I think it would have really elevated this book and took it over the top, but what it lacks in pictures, it makes up for in recipes! 3 1/2 stars from me!

This book is a republication of a cookbook that was originally produced in 1938. I must say, there is a wealth of information in this book! First, you not only get ice cream recipes, but you also get Bombe, Coupe, Frappe, Ice, Mousse, Parfait & Sherbet Recipes. 400 total recipes with a ton of information.

Being that is originally from 1938, some terms, procedures and even some ingredients may need to be adapted. So you have to take that into consideration when making a few of the recipes. The majority though are simple and can easily be made with lots of variety to choose from. Another interesting thing with this being originally from 1938, is there are flavors and desserts that are not as common or know today which makes this a treasured keepsake to pass down to the next generation. For those who like pictures, you won't find any in this book. But if you're looking for a great resource to find some treasured ice cream recipes and desserts, then you'll definitely find it here!

Most of these recipes can be made with just an ordinary freezer, and without the need for special tools or attachments. This book covers everything needed to make delicious ice cream!. The chapters offer many recipes as well as instructions. This book even covers many sauces and even Baked Alaska!

This is a culinary treasure with over 400 delicious recipes. From the basic to expert level with easy to follow instructions. My favorite techniques are the CRYSTALLIZED MINT LEAVES and the PRALINE POWDER FLAVORING. And my CoupCoeur recipe is the ITALIAN MERINGUE PARFAIT. Ideal gift for Ice Cream lovers.

I make ice cream a lot in the summer using my ice cream machine. But I only made the basic flavors, until now. And the tips are priceless. I know now why I messed up many recipes, it matters when and how much of the added flavors, fruits, nuts or other things are mixed in the ice cream. Every item was different. I loved to add strawberries for example and didn’t know that they needed to be added when the mix is almost frozen otherwise the ice cream never gets solid. This book not only has ice cream recipes, there is sherbert, parfait ideas, mousse recipes and so much more. Things I never thought of for the perfect dessert. Do wish more pictures were in the book, I need pictures to show what it might look like if I did it right.

This book has so many different types and flavors of ice cream! Many can be made in an ice cream maker or refrigerator trays. Then there are sections with lots of other chilled dessert recipes, like bombes, coupes, mousse, parfaits, and sherbet. Flavors range from simple to complex, and from standard to exotic. There are desserts in here I have never heard of, and some of the more common ones (i.e. vanilla ice cream) have multiple versions. A very good book for those who love making and eating ice cream and other frozen desserts. I just wish there had been more photos.
I received an ebook ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Ice Cream Book tells you what the recipes in this book are for. However, I was shocked by the number of ice cream recipes compiled. My teen sons and I have made several of them now and I can assure you none of them lasted more than a day. This is the perfect time to grab this fun book with warm weather right around the corner. My boys are even enjoying the quality time together as we decide on which recipe we are going to make next.

This book is a reprint of a book written in 1938. While excellent and comprehensive, you'll need to make some changes to make the recipes work for today.

First, and most importantly, ice cream makers were hand-cranked then. Today we use electric ice cream makers. If you see in the instruction to hand crank, just use an electric ice cream maker instead.

Second, some of the terms may be unfamiliar to you. You'll need to adapt these to their modern equivalents.

Third, the refrigerator is used for many of these recipes. Today's are more consistent than those at the time the book was written. You may need to adapt freezing times.

Having said all this, the book is an excellent and very comprehensive guide to many kinds of frozen desserts. Along with hundreds of recipes for ices and ice creams, you'll find recipes for frozen mousses, bombes, and more. Their are multiple recipes for many flavors ands many, many unusual flavors.

What you won't find here are recipes with tons of mix-ins, that wasn't the style, but you will find so many creative ideas it will keep ice cream lovers happy for years.
