This is a hard book to read. As a parent, I cannot imagine going through this kind of tragedy and how to cope. This book shows the raw emotion and far-reaching effects of their son's murder.

Really, this book just needs read. What devastation losing a child does to a family. Courage and strength to make it through, and all the challenges they face ahead.

A very sad and heartfelt story written by the father of a murdered young man who was attending the University of Tampa. The family had just moved Ryan McCall into his own apartment and he went out with friends to a party. While walking home with a friend, a man attempted to rob them and Ryan was shot. This book is written by his dad Kevin from the daily journals he kept at the time to work through what was happening, to try and hold the rest of the family together.

Wife Joanne, son Kevin, and daughter Kimberly still remain, and all need him in different ways. Kimberly still lives in Pennsylvania, from where the rest of the family all moved not all that long ago to Florida, looking for a new beginning. Son Kevin had also just moved into his own house that week. Dad Kevin and Joanne had been happily married for over 30 years until this tragedy sent them all spinning.

Agonizingly painful at times, but as real as can be. This is what some family members go through in the aftermath of losing a loved one in a violent way. Just trying to get through day by day, while waiting for the murderer to be caught. Then the long haul for a trial, all while still managing to get along with each other and not lose it yourself.

It’s eye-opening and shows how important community support and victim services are. This is for anyone interested in this type of true crime book with input from the family afterward.
