Seeking Fortune is a charming romance with Valentina is an unusual choice for a historical romance heroine, but one that comes across with true human nature including typical flaws and doubts. As a gypsy, she has lived the nomadic life and gypsy ways. Descriptions of her appearance, clothes and mannerisms stay in character with her Romany background.

Valentina meets James while trying to help her sister seek a doctor for her cough. James is a Christian and very much a gentleman. He treated Valentina and Yolanda as equals even when his servants were not quite sure they should be in the house. He allowed them near his son, Jeremy, who was deaf. James was a widower who had lost his wife and his daughter, Jeremy’s twin sister. Through his witness, kind ways and words, he lead Valentina to Christ. Her conversion is touching and appears real.

The Christianity in this book was appealing to me as a reader of romance books. The relationship that developed between James and Valentina was kept respectful and loving. Until, James felt he could no longer trust her. We realize quickly that Valentina’s half-truths are going to cause problems between them, but need to see how their HEA will evolve. This romance include Bible verses and biblical principals that guide the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, including the side romance between Yolanda and Reginald, the way Jeremy’s disability was handled and the lack of ‘period’ balls and parties. Seeking Fortune seemed more about real people with real problems.
