This was a good book of poetry, but I wouldn't call it great. I enjoyed it, and there were a few great lines, but for the most part it was hard for me to get into. I think part of that stems from how long the poems were, and how the details being shared were not integral to the poem; sometimes less is more. Also, I didn't really enjoy the narrator. I felt like this was supposed to be a poetry collection about women and it didn't necessarily paint women in a great light. A bit disappointing, to be honest.

I was excited to see that Life of the Party was available on Netgalley, as I was looking forward to its release I enjoyed this collection more than New American Best Friend. I especially loved the author’s note in the beginning which introduced the premise that true crime tends to focus on the cases that present as anomalies where women are attacked or murdered by men who were complete strangers before the crime. In fact, women are much more likely to be attacked and killed by men they know intimately. Many of these poems focused on such crimes. Olivia Gatwood focuses the spotlight on violence against women, especially those incidences where women feel compelled to remain silent rather than speak their truths.

Touching. Terrifying. Relatable. Olivia Gatwood is the voice of women. Her words and experience encompass a wide range of emotions felt by millions of women. Would love to see her perform and cannot wait to read more of her work.
