“Loki” by Mackenzi Lee was overall a great read about a beloved character—one of my favorites!—Loki. This was fun and fast-paced. Recommend!

I read this without any background of the Loki character, but I thought it was an engaging novel that develops an origin story I'm interested in reading more about.

The story begins in Asgard, a magical kingdom that Odin rules over and where Loki lives with his brother Thor. Loki ends up getting banished to Earth where he begrudgingly learns to work with humans trying to solve a mysterious occurrence. I love the olde timey London and how Loki interacts with other characters. He was cool but has/had so much to learn. The ending definitely lends itself to a sequel to further develop the young Loki story.

A review copy of this ebook was provided by the publisher.

I found this book really interesting but ultimately chose not to review it publically or to recommend it because of Mackenzi Lee's statements in the media.

Much as I adore Marvel's character Loki, I was unable to read the ARC prior to publication—and also prior to controversies involving the author that have left a sour enough taste in my mouth that I acknowledge I would not be able to overlook that to provide an unbiased reading (and therefore review) of the book itself.

Feelings for the author's behavior aside, I enjoyed this for the most part. It was interesting to see a Loki backstory that let him be as devious as we know him to be. I was a bit worried it would try to gloss over his less stellar qualities but instead, it shows them off nicely while still giving him a voice you don't full-on dislike.

While it took me a while to get into the book, I really enjoyed this retelling of Loki's story and an exploration of him as a character. Hope we see more of these books, and by an increasingly diverse group of writers.

A retelling and reimagining of Loki that incorporates mythology and the Marvel Universe. Entertaining but confusing in construction and how time functions and how jumps in time are reconciled.

I very much enjoyed this little novel and really loved to see Loki outside of the MCU Movies. I am a big fan of Mackenzi Lee's writing and I think this story was told very well. Hope to see more Marvel characters get a spotlight in the Bookish World (outside of Comic Books of course)

Seemed kind of slow to start for me, but ended up picking up and I couldn’t put the book down! This was a great and fresh take on Loki, who is one of my favorite characters from the Marvel Universe.

Though the story of Asgard and Norse mythology are not new, there was something so enjoyable about this story! I loved it and would recommend to anyone who loves the MCU as much as I do!

Loved getting Loki’s backstory! Very enjoyable look at a young Loki and what shaped his destiny, the whys of how he things and acts. He didn’t start out as a villain but his family helped that identity take root, quite the tragic story. Well told with a bit of dry humor makes for a perfect set up to the Loki we know and love in the Marvel Universe.

After Mackenzi Lee's numerous recent controversies, I've decided that I'm not comfortable reading or reviewing her books. There are just too many biases that will cloud my judgment and prevent me from generally enjoying her works.

Mackenzi Lee is the perfect author for this tale about Marvel's Loki. I do wish in some ways that the Disney strings didn't show so clearly at times.

MAckenzi Lee is one of the most fun and entertaining ya authors out there right now. Seeing her take on such a well loved and classic character was really great.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.

I fully admit to falling in love with Loki because of Tom Hiddleston's portrayal of him. Zero shame. Despite that, I'm not a Marvel fan and classify Thor as The Only Avenger Who Matters. So I'm a bit biased.

I was a bit wary of this book because I love Movie Loki. I had heard of some of the traits of Comic Loki and was definitely all for it (genderfluid and black nail polish? Yes please!), but I'm not a comic reader, so I was left to dream of the possibilities.

This book was actually a pretty good read and a wonderful insight into Loki. I hope the sequels (And upcoming show!) go even further!

A fun and witty origin tale for Loki, the trickster from Norse mythology and the Marvel Universe. Loki, the younger son of Odin, King of Asgard, has always felt inferior to his more favored and less quick witted elder brother Thor. The sibling rivalry between the brothers is explored and the dialogue between the two of them is hilarious. Since Loki does not possess the physical strength of his brother he experiments at an early age with his magic, a gift inherited from his mother which is not welcomed by his father. Loki finds a companion in his childhood friend Amora, a sorceress in training. At the Feast of Gullveig, Odin sees a prophecy in the Godseye Mirror of one his sons leading an army of the dead against Asgard. When the sacred Mirror is destroyed, Amora is banished to Midgard (Earth) where magic does not exist. Loki is left alone again, struggling to prove that the prophecy does not point to him. He gets a chance to serve his father when he is sent to Midgard to investigate a series of magic-related murders with SHARP, a secret society of mortals in Victorian London. On Midgard, Loki finds himself drawn to Theo, a key member of SHARP and encounters Amora once again. The book delves into LGBTQ issues in London, with Theo suspected and isolated as a homosexual. Theo is awed by Loki’s open gender fluidity and his descriptions of Asgard's open mindedness about gender and sexuality. The ending comes as Loki must choose his own path - to be a loyal prince of Asgard or the villain everyone believes him to be.

I've always been a fan of Ms. Lees descriptive and flowing storytelling. We had the privilege of speaking with Mackenzi for a live chat in 2019 and her approach to LGBTQA+ inclusivity is something that I appreciate and find very important.

Loki is a great addition to her catalogue and Marvel.

Unfortunately, I did not get. the chance to read this ARC prior to its release--I'm hoping to work through my backlist now that we're home for the coming weeks!--but we did end up buying this book for the library collection.

Great characters. Interesting story. Who doesn’t love Loki??? I couldn’t put the book down. I recommend this book to everyone who loves Marvel themed things.

Okay, I feel really bad about this, but I DNF'd this book. I think I am just so used to the Loki that is portrayed in the Marvel movies, that I kept trying to connect him with this character and I couldn't do it. I think it is a fault of my own, and not the books.

I love Mackenzie Lee’s writing. She always has great characters and good world development. I thought this was really well done and something people can relate to. I will continue to read anything she releases.
