It was lovely to head back to the Wicked Dukes club and finally see Viola get her time in the spotlight.

Lady Viola Fairfax wants to be a journalist but that is not a job that’s available to her as a woman, so she manages to hide her identity and Tavistock is born.

Jack Barrett is a politician and has no inclination to marry, there will plenty of chance for that when he’s older.

When someone tries to assassinate the Prince Regent these two characters are brought together in trying to find out the truth. Can Jack keep Viola’s real identity secret and can they get to the bottom of the mystery.

I loved the book as I do with a lot of Darcy Burke’s book and really enjoyed the way the story played out, This series is fabulous and I cant wait to read the next one.

Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Info Dumping but Great Characters

Even though I had an issue or two with a book, I found this to be a delightful read. I didn't like what felt like info-dumping at the beginning of the book, telling us all the heroine's background fairly quickly, nor did I feel like the mystery at the core of the story was resolved. But I thoroughly enjoyed the believable and relatable characters. The hero is utterly swoon-worthy, and I love how protective he was of the heroine nearly as soon as they met when he figured out she was disguised as a man. They certainly had some adventures with fun twists and turns. While I do enjoy the trope of a woman disguised as a man so she can take part in the men's world in historical romance, I do think it is a bit overdone. A fairly high percentage of Regency romances show the heroine desiring the freedoms granted to the men of the times that were denied to the women. I don't think so many real women of the time felt that way as much as it is shown in fiction! I am sure it existed, but not to the extent seen in fiction. We put our modern sensibilities on people/characters in the past because we imagine they must be more like us and our society than theirs. Anyway, I did enjoy the story and the couple after I got past the initial stages. The author has excellent writing skills... but I wish she would forgo the info-dumping!

I really loved Viola as a side character in the second book in this series, so I was excited to see her get her own romance! It's suitably cute and light-hearted, fairly low on the angst, though it uses a romance plot I'm not fond of, which is where the hero and heroine are thrown together to investigate a mystery. I prefer my romances set in ballrooms and teashops, not in darkened alleys. But that aside, this was an enjoyable read, and I'm really enjoying the series!

One Night of Scandal is the 4th book in the Wicked Dukes Club series
by Erica Ridley and Darcy Burke. This fourth book is written by Darcy Burke.

This book is about Jack Barrett and Lady Viola Fairfax, the sister of the duke from the second book. I really liked their story.

When Jack Barrett, a member of parliament, discovers that well-known gossip journalist Travistock is, indeed, a woman in disguise, he feels compelled to help her. Lady Viola Fairfax has to pretend to be a man to be able to write her newspaper column, and when she stumbles over a political scandal she sees her chance for a break through in her career. Unfortunately Jack Barret is in the middle of the scandal - will she break his political reputation or his heart?
While they investigate together they also get to know each other ...
A cute romance with a strong heroine and a likeable male protagonist - another enjoyable read in the Wicked Dukes Club series that can also be read as a standalone.

I had liked both Jack and Viola's characters in the previous books from this series but in their own story they just failed to capture my attention. I put this book aside twice as I just couldn't finish reading it.

Ambitions member of parliament with no time for a wife meets a strong, independent woman who is masquerading as a man to pen a column so she can establish herself as a real journalist. This is the perfect recipe for romance!

Jack Barrett is focusing on serving the people in parliament. Viola Fairfax is the sister of the Duke of Eastleigh. She has to disguise herself as a man so she can get information for the column she writes in a popular women's magazine. Both are strong characters that bring out the best in each other. This was a delightful romance. I love how the characters blend in each of the books in this series.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC provided by NetGalley and the publisher. Thank you!

One Night of Scandal was a fantastic continuation of the Wicked Dukes Club series featuring an amazing romance.

Lady Viola Fairfax wants to be a writer but as no publication will allow a woman to write for them, Viola comes up with the idea to dress up as a man named Samuel Darius Tavistock allowing her to observe areas off-limits to women to come up with ideas to write under Tavistock’s name. For two years Viola has pulled off the scheme without notice until one day she is caught by Jack Barrett, an ambitious member of parliament. Jack is shocked to discover Viola masquerading as a man and even more so when she tells him she’s investigating an MP who helped radicals attack the Prince Regent. As the two spend time together investigating, the pair quickly start to fall for one another which they both swore never to do.

Viola has been somewhat of an outcast in society since she called off her wedding the day of a few years prior to the story. But due to Viola’s status as the sister of a duke as well as the granddaughter of a powerful dowager duchess, she isn’t shunned completely. Viola is perfectly content being alone as it allows her the freedom to do as she pleases, even though she must do so as Tavistock. I liked Viola from the start and I admired her dedication to her work even when it was clear people wanted her to stop digging.

Jack has a plan for his life that does not include getting married or having a family until at least the age of thirty-five. Instead, Jack wants to focus on his career in parliament as he believes in order to enact real change, he will need to dedicate all of his time to his work. In his work to better the current system, Jack makes a few enemies who like the way the system works as it is in their benefit. I liked how even though it was clear people wanted to stop Jack from enacting any real changes, he was determined to persevere.

Viola and Jack’s relationship is slow to start as initially the pair are focused on finding out which MP is helping out the radicals. I really liked the direction their investigation went even if there were a few threads that didn’t quite get resolved by the book’s end. The majority of the meetings between the two are while Viola is dressed up as Tavistock which made me really enjoy the few occasions they were together where Viola was herself. One thing I love about their relationship is that Jack doesn’t try and force Viola to stop being Tavistock. He is obviously worried about her safety, but ultimately realizes that it’s Viola’s choice on when she will stop.

Overall I really enjoyed One Night of Scandal and I thought the pairing between Viola and Jack to be wonderfully done. I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of the Wicked Dukes Club series if you’re looking for some shorter historical romances.

This book was a fun read. The main female character, Lady Viola Fairfax, is highly relatable for me.
She wants to write, but because she is a female, the Ladies Gazette will not allow her to write for them.
She dons the persona of Tavistock and begins writing for the magazine.
She also decides that she can do more as a man, and she starts wearing britches and going around town as Tavistock.
Jack Barrett picks up on the fact that she is not a man. He proceeds to stop her before she goes into Brooks one night. He tells her that he knows that she is not a man.
She is shocked that her disguise did not work.
Jack wants to get to know her and help her. However, Viola is extremely stubborn. Will she accept help from a man?

My first Darcy Burke book and definitely not my last.
I love historical romance and after having read endless amounts of contemporary romance, this book was a breath of fresh air.
was it my favourite historical romance? No. But that does not mean that One Night of Scandal wasn't a good read. I enjoyed the plot line. It was entertaining, fun and sweet.

"Viola, if you continue to look at me as if I'm a sweetmeat on a tray, I'm going to throw you on the bed and shag you senseless"
- Jack Barrett

Ambitious member of the parliament, Jack Barrett has no desires to be wed at the moment. He aspires to progress his political career before he even considers looking for a wife. He was drawn into a series of events that led to a scandal after he realizes that Lady Viola Fairfax, sister to the Duke of Eastleigh is the Women's Magazine columnist Tavindish. Knowing that the lady would do anything to get her story the protector in him surfaces along with lust for an unlikely bed partner.

For a few years now Lady Viola has been writing a column for a popular women's magazine masquerading as a man. No one has called her ruse. But a stumbling upon a brewing scandal and a juicy story was too good for her to pass. If only Mr. Jack Barrett, a prominent MP, didn't find out her secret. Now she must find the truth and protect her secret while protecting her heart.

I have no recollection of ever reading Darcy Burke novels beforehand. This is my first and I was excited to read it. The story grew on me due to the characters. They have enjoyable inner monologues that left me laughing, cringing, and my heart palpitating. I'd admit it was a slow read. I didn't get into the book until the four chapter even if the paragraphs are well written and phased well. In the end it did pick up the phase for me.

I did enjoy the book and recommend people to read it but don't do what I did where I read this book before the previous ones. I didn't get the character connections because I wasn't familiar with everyone. It was difficult to navigate in the beginning when I was completely clueless. There are parts of the story I didn't compered either due to political discussions or plots of the other books I wouldn't really know until I check the other books. What I enjoyed about the story is how deep inside, due to their inner monologues I can see how perfect the main characters are for each other. They are cut from the same cloth and there are moments I dared them to say they aren't attracted to each other because it was so apparent. The moment Jack claims he hasn't found anyone like his mother yet while discussing marriage with his father infuriated me. I screamed hard, 'Hello! Viola?!' She too has her own hesitations continuously saying that she doesn't want to marry or doesn't feel attracted to Jack. They are a couple full of pride and set on their own ways that it was all the more fun to see how they end up together.

All in all I gave the book 4 stars because of the slow start, my difficulty to understand some points in the story, and the climax which wasn't that hard drawn. I wanted something epic to conclude their story but it was fine.

I found this book to be more suspense then romance. I needed more romance between the main characters for this book to work for me. The plot seemed convoluted at times and I wasn't that interested in either character.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

Darcy Burke does it again great book and live her characters and how real they come off the pages. Each book is written as if it can be read out of order but who wants to do that!!! Can't wait to read the next book!

One Night of Scandal by Darcy Burke. #4 in the Wicked Duke Series. Darcy Burke Publishing, 2019.

When Jack, a serious-minded member of parliament, recognizes Lady Viola disguised as Mr. Tavistock, a journalist, he opts to accompany her on outings to protect her. Aside from some political elements, which I enjoyed, this story is fairly typical of historical romances featuring adventurous young women who disguise themselves as men and go out and about in the evening.

This book is well written and easy to read. Although neither main character was looking for romance, it is a romance, so was fairly predictable.
